Matting??

egyptianchickegyptianchick Posts: 13Registered Users
I've recently (over the past couple months) started to get really bad matted hair. Like if I pick up a tiny piece, all of my hair is picked up with it.
I detangle my hair usually every two or three days with a wide tooth comb and coconut oil. (when I detangle with conditioner in the shower it seems like twice as much hair comes out and it takes way longer.)

Anyways one day it got REALLY bad and after I finally got it out my hair looks so unbelievably damaged.

I have a phobia almost of hairdressers for a trim...

Have no clue what to do.

Ideas plz?
Mostly 3b with 3a and 3c underneath
Layered but mostly BSL (Hip length when straight)
Conditioner: As I am Cowash, OR Tresseme Naturals OR Shea Moisture Masque.

Style: KC Knot Today+ a TINY bit Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie.
2nd-6th day hair: Spritz with a mixture of Aloe Vera Gel, Coconut Oil, and water.

Bumping!! I'm experiencing this as well with massive dryness due to the cod weather and the different regions water..

Any suggestions? Cause breakage... I can't

I detangle my hair usually every two or three days with a wide tooth comb and coconut oil. (when I detangle with conditioner in the shower it seems like twice as much hair comes out and it takes way longer.)

This may be precisely the problem. Everyone sheds about 100 hairs a day - the hairs we curlies shed tends to get wrapped around the other curls and not actually come away until we detangle.

If you only detangle every 3 days - there's 3 days worth of shed hair just hanging out waiting to be pulled away - that's why it looks like you're losing so much.

Those shed hairs can also weave the other hairs together resulting in matting, knotting and SSKs (single strand knots). My advice would be to detangle every day, or at least finger comb to grab those shed hairs and get them out.

I agree that it sounds like you're not getting all the shed hairs out, and this may be what's causing the matting. You may want to detangle more often, or use conditioner or something with more slip than the coconut oil to help you get all those shed hairs out. It may look scary to see all the hairs coming out, but like Lisa said, this is normal.

My hair is doing the same...

I condition like crazy and comb it out with a wide tooth comb and see a crazy amount of hair down the drain.

I wake up with no knots but by supper time my hair is completely matted at the nape of my neck and crazy knotted everywhere else.

If your hair is knotting more than usual it may be time for a trim. It could also be a result of an ingredient you're using, or the change in weather. With the drier air, you may need more moisture. If you live in a dry climate with low dews, you may need to avoid products with glycerin, or other humectants, as these can pull moisture out of the hair.
