Needing advice on fighting dandruff!!

nappilyevaaftanappilyevaafta Posts: 31Registered Users
For the past week or so I have had a strange case of dandruff :confused1:. I had mild dandruff when my hair was relaxed but as soon as I stopped, "it" stopped as well (or atleast I thought so). No flakes, only a clean scalp. Anywho, I decided to only wear protective styles for the rest of the year so I installed crochet braids. My original plan was to wear them for a month but my scalp was itching something TERRIBLE by week two. So I removed them, thoroughly cleansed my scalp, DC'd, etc., and thought I was good. Now my hair is in a braided updo and I am starting to see a few flakes already :sad1:. Anyone else had/or currently dealing with this issue?

My scalp gets like that too when I wear protective styles since I'm not washing it once a week like usual. I either put oil on it or if oil doesn't work I take a damp cloth and scrub it with water or a cotton swab and dab at it with a little witch hazel.

In my experience, when the hair is in a taut or braided style where the scalp is exposed to air, the scalp can be more prone to dryness and resulting flakiness and itchiness. I keep my scalp moisturized by using watery leave ins and sometimes oiling with a thick oil, usually castor oil. I can't use oil all the time but it helps sometimes.

Yea it's thick so that's why I don't use it often and when I do I am conservative with it because if I apply too much my scalp will get itchy. But sometimes I need it to help keep my scalp from getting dry and tight.

Oils can cause some people to have dandruff and itchiness. I have had issues with EVOO making me itchy and breaking my face out so I started using EVOO only right before a shampoo. Recenty I decided to give it a second try as a sealer but use it very sparingly. So far so good. Castor I use as a sealer but it has caused ichiness on my scalp before. I only use it on my scalp where i have alopecia and since i am a frequent washer it hasn't been a problem. If I went long times without washing I think it would be itchy for me. Like you my scalp improved a lot when I stopped relaxing. Mine danduff was embarrassing bad.

I think that I shampoo once a week with TJ tTT helps a whole lot.
Yes, it's real. No, you can't touch it. :wav:

Have you tried a dandruff shampoo like Nizoral? It nipped my issue in the butt several years ago. Dandruf hasn't returned since.

Try the shea moisture black soap shampoo. I absolutely LOVE it and my brother does too. Its for people with dandruff, psoriasis, and product build up. I heard good things about the purification mask from shea moisture too

I use some Shea moisture products so I will have to try this one, but how often do you have to wash?
