Epsom and condish

Jas76Jas76 Posts: 2,283Registered Users
So I read two articles online (not here on NC). One was about magnesium's effect on hair (repairing salt bonds in curls, etc), one about it's effect on the body. The 2nd talked about Epsom and using it for magnesium absorption through the skin. It talked about mixing some with your conditioner ad massaging it into your scalp, leaving it there for a little while, than rinsing it. (it also suggested using oil instead of condish if preferred.)

SO, I got to thinking I might try it. I co-washed with suave clarifying mixed with some Epsom. I left it on while shaving, etc, then rinsed it out. Then I used a RO, detangled, rinsed, and did everything else like normal. (LI, oil, gel, plop.)

We'll see how it looks in a while, but so far so good! It definitely seemed curlier, and didn't seem dried out.

It might be a good option for those who like epsom's effects but find it drying. The condish may counteract the drying, and it's also being rinsed out rather than left in like it is with a spray or a gel.

Food for thought!

I just blogged about a pinch of salt being the key to the perfect wash n go. I do a epsom salt rinse, and it really works well for my hair when I need a boost.

Thanks for the info, Jas - I am off to do some research and read up on it, and I will try your method of mixing epsom with condish tomorrow :) Will let you know then what transpired! :D

I just love how everyone shares info here!

ETA Forgot to say, love your curls, Jas :) nice smile on you, too!

I actually realized the benefits of salt for my hair while travelling to the Caribbean. I like to travel a lot...every few months I go on vacation and I realized that the salt water from the sea did amazing things to my hair!
After dunking myself in the salty water and lounging around on the beach I found that my hair was incredibly soft! It was as if I just did a really good deep conditioning treatment. I was amazed at first and a bit baffled. I just went on vacation at the end of September to a bunch of different islands and I made sure my hair was submerged when I went to the beaches. My next vacation is on Dec 8th to a few different places including Aruba and I want to bottle the water and take it back with me to use on my hair....Maybe I’ll try the Epsom instead.

I will let you know tomorrow after I try it! I think I will use it with condish and under a shower cap and leave on for a bit - I just found this tidbit about it while researching...

"Hair volumizer - Combine equal parts deep conditioner and Epsom salt and warm in a pan. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly."

So I will try it as a pre-poo deep condish :) I sure could use the volume! Since it is in essence mag sulph, it should curl hair - like AG Re:Coil ;) (which I can't use, due to the protein in it.)

Ok, Jas, I tried the Epsom - in a prepoo (no time for DT) and also in my condish. Yes, it made my hair slightly curlier, but it also made my hair feel dry ;p mind you, I did try a new sports gel and I suspect it may have protein in it, which would also have made me dry.

I did get slightly more volume, too :)

thanks for the tip! I won't be using it every time, but maybe for special occasions when I need to look as curly as possible, lol! Oh and, though my hair feels drier, it is barely frizzy! Yay! :D

Glad it sorta worked - lol! I definitely would keep it to just my co-wash ( or maybe added to a DT), not to the RO (def not both).

I will definitely keep experimenting with it!

well, two strikes on me, because - firstly I tried an awful sports gel ;p and second, I did use it (Epsom) both before and after 'poo. I must say I had 0 frizz when I was doing my supersoaker and scrunching product in, and my hair clumped beautifully for once. I really think it was the gel that ruined this. ETA I put the gel on last thing, and got that oh-oh feeling ;p

So what I am going to do is just use it in my RO next wash and see what happens :) I went and got some decent Kenra gel today, so the gel will no longer be an issue! lol! This is what I get for even dreaming of trying Dippity Doo ;p Being a PJ does get me into hair trouble sometimes, lol! I just wish my hair liked cheaper products ;p :king:

Meanwhile I hope someone else tries the Epsom, because I would be interested in seeing other people's results :)

Same here! I'd love to hear some other takes, too!

You'll have to let me know how your experimenting goes!

Heya Jas :) Further experimentation... I used the Epsom salt with my 'poo today, trying to use it as you did. I then added KY lube gel when styling, over my LI. My hair is super, super soft and very curly ;) My hair shrank up about 5 inches, it got so curly!

So last time, it was definitely the gel I used that made my hair really dry! I don't think it was the Epsom that did that, because I got such amazing results today. I know it isn't just the glycerin in the KY, because I used KY but no Epsom last time I washed, and my hair was not this soft (though it was pretty curly ;) )

I like the Epsom salts. Did you know you can use it also to exfoliate your face gently? Just use a teaspoon of it with your face wash. I read a page about it and you can use Epsom to do so many things!

This is extremely intriguing to me, I will have to try adding some mag sulfate to my rinse out. I have the CHS treatment shampoo which has mag sulfate and I love it, but don't like using the shampoo every time I wash. This sounds like a good option. I will have to try it! (very excited)

So you did you low-poo then put Epsom in your RO? And then did you JUST use the KY? Or did you use any kind of gel over it?

My magic mix is a blend of:

1 pump of L'Oreal EverSleek Humidity Defying Leave-In Creme, 2 pumps of Redken Ringlet 07 Curl Perfecting Lotion, and about 5 spritzes of Epsom Salt/Water Spritz (mixed at 1 tsp Epsom to 1 Cup water). Put all of this in hand and rub between palms to get smooth creamy lotion and apply evenly through hair, scrunching. After fully in hair, spritz more of the epsom salt water spritz more liberally over hair and continue scrunching. Air dry and scrunch out.

This looks especially amazing after using the GVP Conditioning Balm.

Lol...well, I used Renpure Argan Oil 'poo (which for me is a low-poo!) and added the Epsom salt to that, about a tablespoon, followed by Olive Tree Argan Oil RO. Left that on for a while, then rinsed, then layered Curlesque LI, a bit of Foxy Curls, then the KY. Then Denman brushing while sopping wet, then Curlesque Curl Creme followed with Kenra Ciment hard hold gel. (my hair really resists styling products, so I have to use a lot to get any hold/control!)

Then the usual - plop sopping wet 5 mins, then scrunch, then replop. Mostly air dry, some pixiecurl with diffuser. And had lovely well-formed S'es with huge clump factor, with corkscrew ends. Brilliant! :D (am having lovely day two hair, as well.)

The Epsom makes my hair feel super, super soft.

Guthy, good luck! I can't wait to read your results. And Transformer, what a great idea, I will have to try your spray. :D

Well the pro is that I have curlier hair. The con is that my hair is slightly dry. However, I attribute this to my slap happy approach to the Epsom salts. Some may add a little then gradually increase, but I am more of the maverick type. I added probably a little over a tbsp. (eye balled it) to my rinse out. Next time, I will add less and see what happens.

I do think that this will be a regular part of my routine. I use re:coil, but do not like the weight it adds to my hair. I like that this is a weightless option.

My hair is still wet :) but when it is dry, I will post again. You never know with curly hair what the end result will be :)

I had better luck adding it to my co-wash rather than my RO. I think it gave my RO a chance then to counter the dryness. Something you might experiment with if you find the drying effects continue!

Oh wow the curls!!! I just tried some Epsom salt mixed with my RO and the results are just WOW! I'm worried about the drying effect so will most likely do this just once a week. Thanks for the suggestion guys!

Jas - when you use Epsom with your cowash, are you only putting the mixture on your scalp or on the length of the hair as well? I love voluminous hair so would love any tips and tricks with Epsom to add volume.
  • Jas76Jas76 Posts: 2,283Registered Users
I mix it in my palm and then clean my scalp, but then I pull it through the rest of my hair before I rinse.

I will say I use the Epsom more when I'm co-washing and think I might end up OC'd. I'll use it in my RO rather than co-wash in that case, even.

I don't have a lot of issues with drying, but I also don't use it more than once or maybe twice a week.

Do you get epsom salt in a drugstore or grocery? Has anyone tried the mag. oil and does it counteract dryness? Another interesting thing to try!:occasion9: And inexpensive - whoopee!

I got mine at the drugstore.

I'm still wanting to try the mag oil. Someone on here uses it and says it is in fact less drying, but IDK.

It is definitely possible to go overboard with Epsom, and that can be drying. It's kinda like the protein/moisture balance - it's got a small window of comfort!

What about applying the mag sulfate dissolved in water after rinsing out co wash, rinse then condish with rinse out? I used some mag sulfate I got at dollar store, but it had a lavendar fragrance and I think that may have added to the drying effect. May have to try with plain mag sulfate.

I use mag oil all over my body and in my homemade flaxseed gel.
Magnesium has tremendous health benefits and about 80% of the population is deficient. I make my own mag oil. Really cheap, really easy.

Mag oil doesn't contain oil. It's called oil because of the oily appearance it gives. It's just a super saturated magnesium chloride and water solution.

How do you make your own mag oil?

And yes! Mag oil is really just named for its appearance, same as Epsom salt! Tho it's not an oil OR a salt!

How much do you put in your FSG? Do you put it in anything else? Do you just rub it into you skin and scalp like a lotion?
