Washing hair at night

Hi,

I'm experimenting with washing my hair at night and would love your tips on the logistics of how you do this. I have to take a shower in the morning because I sweat so much overnight. What works best for you?

Also, what do you do with it if you don't (can't think of the term) put it on top of your head while you sleep? I tried that, and having it tied up gives me a headache.

This question probably sounds really basic, but I'm so used to washing my hair in the morning during my shower, I guess I'm set in my ways.

Thanks for your help!

I prefer to wash mine in the late morning, afternoon, or early evening. Lol! Anything but early morning or last thing at night!!!

But... Of course those are typically the two most likely times. When I wash at night, I plop overnight. Then in the morning I spritz lightly with water and condish and a little spray gel, scrunch gently with a t-shirt, and diffuse a bit. Takes about 5-10 mins!

I prefer to wash in the morning, but I leave the apt by 7:00 so I often don't have time. I also REALLY hate sleeping with wet hair so for myself:

    - I really try to start no later than 7:00, 7:30 PM.

    - I wrap in one of those microfiber twisty towel things right out of the shower (also to keep hair off my neck/shoulder, which I also hate)

    - After about 15 - 30 mins I take off the towel and diffuse dry it. I can't sleep with wet hair so it needs to be FULLY DRY, or enough so that when I go to bed it's done drying. This can take a while, anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes....I usually read or watch TV during this time.

Have you tried loosening your pineapple? It shouldn't be tight enough to cause a headache. But in any case I just put my hair in a large bonnet to sleep. It gets smushed sometimes but I can fluff it up or spray it down and it looks normal again

Pineapple...that's the word I was looking for! Yes, I've tried loosening it, and the tie fell out in the middle of the night, leaving me with a huge cowlick! My hair is above shoulder length, so it's not easy to tie up.

Where do you wash your hair? In the sink, or is there a better way?

I stay up til 11, 11:30pm usually, so I don't shower any later than 9pm. I let my hair air dry about 70-80% of the way (depending on the time of year--it air dries faster in the summer of course). If it's summer, I usually sleep on it while it's still a little wet, and if it's winter I blow dry.
No matter what time of the year it is, I sleep with my hair above my head and on a silk pillowcase. I cannot pineapple it or tie it because it's so prone to dents!

Another option I do is to turn my head upside down, and gently and tactically tuck my curls inside a satin cap. Then, to keep the cap on through the night, I take 2 metal double prong curl clips and secure the cap above my ears (1 clip per side). Lastly, I take to flat clips (the kind people use with ponytails to keep down flyaways) and secure the cap at the nap of my neck.
When I wake up, my hair is matted to my head, but it shakes out really well!

How in the heck do you keep the plop in overnight? I tried this one time and my shirt for plop just worked its way off as I sleep.

I wash mine at night and sleep on it wet on a satin pillowcase. I don't plop or anything. I put leave in conditioner in right after i wash it, and that's it. I wet it lightly with a spray bottle to style in the morning.

I could never sleep with it wet on the pillow!! I'd soak the pillow, I'd soak ME, and my hair would not turn out well!! (but that's ME - obviously this works for some people!)

I sleep in a hair towel when I overnight plop. A flour sack towel would probably work, too, though, and be more like a t-shirt.

Basically I fold it into a triangle, lay it across the toilet seat lid with the long side facing me and the point facin the tank. I put my head down onto it, pull the top point(s) to the back of my head, then pull the side points to the back of my head and tie them together.

It's a tighter plop than you get with a t-shirt, I think. At least than what I get with a t-shirt.

Anyhow, it stays on just fine, even with all my tossing and turning I do.

In the morning it's still fairly damp, but I still need a little spritzing so I can scrunch out the flatness it gets from being slept on.

I would make such a mess trying to wash my hair at the sink.....I hop in the shower. Plus, under running water is the only way I can detangle properly.

Showering a little earlier seems like a good idea. Going to bed slightly damp is doable for me. Also, if you can, don't put product while it's soaking wet, it will dry faster, let it dry about 40%, it's quite damp still.

i prefer to shower at night, so i wash my hair twice a week, during my shower at night of cause. my hair takes over 3 hours to dry and i dont have time in the morning to try to dry it in half an hour. (ive tried this, several times and different ways). so now i shower not too late, in the evening, and do my oil/condish and let it air dry as much as i can. then i pinapple while its still damp. when i wake up in the morning i just need to shake it out and somtimes add a bit of oil to my ends and thats it!
now that its getting colder ive had to change up my routine a bit, i cant afford getting sick and have to ride my bike to work.

my hair: 3b, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
Oils and my own procuts are my hairs best friend
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

That's pretty much the ONLY way I do my hair....soaking wet. That's how the curls stay defined and shiny.

Newbie... What's a pineapple? I can't ever get away with washing at night. Dry or wet my hair goes crazy at night. I obviously just sleep on it though. It's like little hair elves come and attack.

I'm only been CG for 2-3 months. But I do have my system down for night wash/ styling. I'm a nurse and I'm up at 515. So there is NO way I'm washing my hair at that time. I did it once and it took til lunch for my hair to air dry...lol... So I do my routine completely at night 2-3 x a week. I use SS method to put in my LI, stylers and 2 gels. Then I plop for 1 hour, keeps me from touching it and causing frizz. Then I do Smasters method with more gel and diffuse til pretty dry. Then I pinapple with a cloth hair tie and Diffuse again with my hair up...this creates a pie of curls on my head and sets them there for the night, this way they r not getting crushed while I sleep. Also I leave them crunchy to keep them intact while I sleep. In the morning I undo my hair, I have massive volume, but falls as I get ready. I get 2 and ok 3rd day hair this way. I also sleep with satin pillowcase. Hope this helps...sorry SOOO long.

I use either CCCCL or AGrecoil. I then use some type of firm gel. This I switch up. My favorite gel is either Arcangel or KCCC b/c i feel it helps my waves to pop. I live in florida so the weather is horrible here. But I can get really good 2nd day hair and pretty darn good 3rd day hair. Its really trial and error.

I've been experimenting with different conditioners. I've been trying Everday Shea Moistrizing Conditioner and Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition. I'd really prefer not to use 'cones (which GFTN has), but I've been having so much trouble with frizz, I don't know what to do. Actually, neither of these conditioners leave my hair frizz-free, which is why I thought maybe experimenting with different techniques would help. If you have suggestions for a 'coneless cowash for wavy, fine hair, I'd really appreciate it!

I think hands down the best conditioners are curl junkie!!! I LOVE them. Very good quality and CG friendly. I use the strengthing one and rehab for my DC... Just bought the protein treatment Repair Me...LOVE THEM ALL...then I use cheap drugstore CG for my cowash and detangling...I know some more budget friendly ones you can get from sallys or try Ulta..both have great return policies..

Wish I could help but washing at night just doesn't cut it for me. I hate going to bed with a wet head and my hair will never be fully dry in the morning.

I usually just pick a day where I know I will be able to wash my hair before 4pm and let it air dry before bed.

I wash my hair about two hours before I'm going to sleep so it's about halfway dry when I go to bed. Then I pineapple with a giant claw clip I got from target. I have a lot of hair and it's bra strap length so I need that size, but if you have shorter hair you could use a smaller one. I find that using a claw clip rather than a ponytail holder pulls on the curls less so they don't get pulled out and your scalp doesn't hurt, especially when you take it down in the morning. Additionally, I sleep on a satin pillowcase and last night I tried wrapping a silky Remington scarf around my head at the hairline and when I woke up my hair was basically dry and looked great. Hope this helps!

I'm laying in my bed typing this with a claw clip, silk scarf from Sally's, and a satin pillow case. I have been doing this method for 4 days now. I recently started a new job working mornings so I have been showering at night. Pineapple worked great for me on dry hair but not wet until I noticed breakage and that's when I decided to use a claw clip. So far I've had great results and wished I tried this months ago. Ohhh also before I got the satin scarf I used my silk cap. That worked decent. I have a problem with keeping that on my head. I watched YouTube videos on how to tie scarfs for bed and it works A LOT better. HTH
