I need some unique advice as I have a problem that I've researched for weeks and have found no solution to. :sad11:

Most advice will say "don't use heat products," etc..

Well, I haven't used heat products in *years* until recently (to straighten my hair) but even then my hair has never been the same since 3 years ago when I cut it into a bob/pixie cut... It grew out very differently, brittle, coarse and unlike hair...

Can anyone explain what happened? :goofy:

To go into detail:

I have (or rather, had) 2b/2c type hair. Wavy, bouncy, shiny, etc... but after having it chopped (and regretting it as I missed my long tresses in the winter) I decided to grow it out again...

I never went to a salon for 3 years (until recently) the hair dresser didn't say anything except "use olive oil sometimes.." something I've already tried along with countless masks, products, etc..

My hair has no bounce, it's stiff, brittle, coarse, has a ton of split ends ... honestly, it doesn't even feel like hair anymore.. but straw.. and sometimes cloth... it's devastating, compared to what I was used to.

So the advice to use "oils, masks, AVOID heat products," etc.. simply don't work. If anything the masks/oils just remind me of how straw-like my hair is as it feels worse with the products on it..

Am I supposed to chop my hair off completely and start over? Or is there a way to just remove the split ends and spare my hair whilst trying vitamins, etc..

I'm wondering if ANYONE can relate to the experience or at least has some advice.

P.S Not going to the salon sounds ridiculous, I know.. But I was used to hair naturally being itself with/without a salon... I don't understand what happened. =/

If you read this post, thanks for taking the time to look through it and give your 2 cents. <3

I think this has been double posted... Pardon! heh

I really don't know what is going on.....I will suggest that you clarify your hair with a shampoo that has sulfates but no silicones. Then try using silicone-free products for awhile to see if the silicones (if you've been using them) are the cause of the brittleness. That's what was going on with my hair.....the silicones created a moisture barrier and I couldn't, for the life of me, get my hair back to it's normal softness. Once I realized that, my hair has began to flourish.
Good luck and I hope that helps.

I also don't know what's going on, but unfortunately, the only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off. There are ways to prevent further spit ends, but once they have already happened, I don't know of a way to make them come back together again.

You might need a protein/moisturizing treatment like Curl Junkie Repair Me. I hesitate to recommend protein because that can also make your hair brittle if your hair doesn't need it or you use too much. When I use Repair Me which is not just protein - it is also mixed with moisturizer, I follow that with a deep treatment that doesn't have any protein in it - just as added moisturizing.

Protein followed by moisturizer always helps my hair regain bounce, silkiness and health. Oils do nothing for me.

I hope you find a solution. Please post back and let us know.

ETA: Also, just a thought - make sure you are eating healthy. If your hair isn't growing in healthy, are you getting enough protein and healthy oils in your diet?
    2/c Coarse hair med. density.
    Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

Straw-like hair indicates protein overload. Cut out all protein and see if there is any improvement. You may need some protein but you need to cut all out then find your hair's exact needs.

If you have low porosity hair, gentle heat can be your friend. Saturate with warm water then apply conditioner and give it time to absorb. Steam caps are great (look for a post called "DT?" posted recently I explained how I do the steam treatment.

If you have split ends, like the op said, you cannot fix or repair them. They must be trimmed off.

I don't think not going to a salon is weird at all. :)
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!! :read2:
    My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
    My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
    RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
    LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.

Thank you all so much, I can't tell you how much your personalized advice means to me. I guess that explains why couldn't find anyone to relate to online, cause this specific matter is quite baffling.

One thing I did notice is that each strand seems to be thinner/weak than my original/healthy strands used to be. So I figured not going to the salon to get it trimmed made for a "breeding ground" of split ends that my long hair was now born from.

But I'm going to try each and everyone's advice -- I'm a bit more hopeful with new experiments.
