ATTENTION: Renpure Organics Argan Oil Conditioner Now Contains Amodimethicone!

Hello everyone,

I just searched and was unable to find any information about what I have found out so I am letting you know here.

I went CG in January of this year and after trying several drugstore products I finally settled on a good combo of co-washing with Suave Naturals and using Renpure Organics Argan Oil conditioner as a rinse out.
I have noticed that since school started in August that my hair has slowly been looking worse and worse. This past weekend when I was conditioning my hair I was reading the Renpure bottle and I realized that it contained amodimethicone. I immediately started wondering if I had missed this before so I looked at an older bottle that I had and, sure enough, it does not contain amodimethicone. I had a subscription through Amazon to send me two bottles of Renpure Organics Argan Oil conditioner every two months and the last time I received some was at the beginning of August. I am not quite sure when it was reformulated but it was sometime over the summer.

Now I am not quite sure what to do regarding my own hair. What do I use to remove the build up of amodimethicone. What rinse out conditioner can I use now.

I hope this helps some people and I would appreciate any help from others.

EDIT - I should also note that this is for the Renpure Organics Argan Oil Luxurious Conditioner and not the Renpure Organics Argan Oil Deep Penetrating Reconstructor, which is know to have amodimethicone.

Argh, another reformulation? I switched to Renpure's Argan Oil Luxurious conditioner just this fall as a replacement for GFTN (which now has amodimethicone), and my hair loves it so much I've been able to conditioner only style with it. I got my bottle in the middle of September and it only has Silicone Quaternium-17, which is water soluble. No idea how long the bottle might have been sitting on the store shelf though.

Amodimethicone can be removed with a sulfate shampoo, or with a sulfate free shampoo that contains Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Cocobetaine.

I don't have any good suggestions on a CG friendly conditioner with a highly similar ingredients deck. Many like Sally Beauty Supply's Generic Value Products Conditioning Balm (a knockoff of Biolage Conditioning Balm), and the As I Am line. If you want something you can get in a Wal-Mart, there's Giovanni or the Yes To lines. Also, last I heard, Garnier's Body Boost and Pure Clean conditioners were both still silicone free and CG friendly.

amodimethicone does not build up. and it can be removed with a low poo. maybe there is another ingredient in there that your hair does not like? of maybe your hair is sensitive to it???

regardless of whether it builds up, it would still block moisture from penetrating, right?

here is one article by the curl chemist that should be helpful:

    Amodimethicone and other Amine-functionalized Silicones

there are other silicone articles and low poos what do they remove, etc., so keep searching curl chemist articles.

sounds to me like you wouldn't want to use amodimethicone unless you regularly use sulfates OR cocobetaine.

I think you will be pleased to know that amodimethicone is water-soluble when accompanied by trideceth-12 and cetrimonium chloride in the same formula; you can find this information out there if you google “amodimethicone water soluble.” I haven’t checked out the ingredients in the shampoo, but the conditioner does indeed contain trideceth-12 and cetrimonium chloride and so you should be Curly Girl good to go!
