Please help me understand :)

While I'm not new here, I don't post much...mostly read. My hair is doing okay...I think I like what I'm using (I never buy anything without reading reviews here first). What I'm not "getting" is the whole porosity, protein-deficient, etc. thing. Like...what does it mean if my hair is (insert type) porosity, and how do I know if I'm getting too little/just enough/too much protein? Can anyone help enlighten me? I've read some of the articles, but still don't quite get it. Thanks!

Well, for example, my hair is low-porosity. This means it does not readily accept conditioner. It means products often just sit on top of the hair and never absorb (e.g. Oil). so, i utilize heat to open the cuticles and get the moisture in. Most advice is to avoid heat - I now know that is advice I am better off ignoring.

As far as protein - my hair will sometimes respond well initially o products with protein. After a week or two at the most, it will suddenly be dry and straw-like. I also cannot go completely protein-free, so I now know to watch my hair and adjust the protein and moisture accordingly. (I'm still learning this part.)

I have been no-poo for over a year and only in the last month or so has it finally started coming together for me and it was only after I learned my hair properties. It completely dictates what products work best for me. My hair may not do everything low-porosity hair can be known for, or respond exactly how another's low-po hair might, so it still isn't a precise formula. but it sure narrows down the field of products and techniques to try!
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!! :read2:
    My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
    My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
    RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
    LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.

here's a good link to understanding the hair basics:

menu is on left side, click on hair basics, faqs.....

there are other websites also, just not coming to mind right now.

as far as protein goes, if your hair texture is fine, then you need protein on a regular basis. if it's medium, some protein. coarse, very little protein.

    3a, some 2c & 3b, medium texture, porosity normal, low elasticity :-(

    1) Hi Robyn :)

    2) It seriously took me lining up all the products I had ever tried, evaluating them one by one, and then comparing ingredients based on what my hair loved, hated, or just didn't do anything with. That's when I realized I was protein and glycerin sensitive. Then I read descriptions of porosity over and over again and finally accepted that despite my copious use of hair dye, my stupid hair was STILL low-porosity and needed more moisture than protein! It took some time but now it's better than trying products that are certain not to work because they contain one of my hated ingredients.

    3) MI001 - I think we might be hair twins! Aside from my flaky scalp and coloring, that is... (if it weren't for my scalp I think my hair might really like no-poo....)
Mod CG since 5/10, 2b/3a, med width/density, low/med porosity, greying since 18, color over grey since 21

Hair hates: non-keratin protein, glycerin, sorbitol, agave, sulfates, polyquats, co-washing (flaky scalp), maybe aloe?
Hair loves: fewer/more natural ingredients, moisture

Scalp wash: Selsun Blue naturals or reg when desperate
    Low poo: Giovanni TTTT
    RO: SN - Strawberry, ES
    LI: SNES
Style: HETT mousse, FSG if I make it, ??
