'Hair droop" in colder weather now!

MyrnaMyrna Posts: 2,332Registered Users Curl Neophyte
Arrghh! just as I figured out my combo, the weather got cold, and now my hair is soft and softly falling. I had been using Biolage styling gel under Deva styling foam. Any suggestions? do I need a stronger gel or a stronger mousse?

I don't have advice but I have the same issue here. *sigh*
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!! :read2:
    My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
    My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
    RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
    LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.

You need to readjust your protein moisture balance with the change of seasons.

I have the same problem. Today my curls were so blah....(rain and 57)...yesterday (sunny and 80) they rocked.

Do you add more moisture to your hair in the winter? Or less?

I used AVG (the only 'protein' my hair tolerates) today and an extra conditioning yesterday with very little improvement. I will keep in mind some of that may change, though. (It is only going to get colder and dryer from here lol) I will up the LI, too.

I've been no poo for over a year but only recently learned hair properties and it made a huge difference. My hair changed last fall/winter, too, but I just didn't know what to even look for, or to connect it to humidity/dew point yada yada.

I suspect my hair does not tolerate glycerin well. I also just recently began learning about dew points, humectants and anti-humectants. That seems like it could be part of the problem? Any advice from anyone regarding any of that? I know...so much of this is just personal and trial and error.

Helps to hear the issue is relatively normal, though! :)

make sure glycerin is not at the top of the ingredient lists. i do use products with glycerin in winter, but it is in middle/bottom part of list, and it also depends on the formulation, enough butters/oils in product to compensate i guess.

i use heavier leave ins in lower dews and most days i seal it.

i don't use protein treatments often, but i use them less often in lower dews, hair needs more moisture then.

i guess what it is is that hair loses moisture to the drier air, so we have to compensate for that. for sure my hair is happier in mid to high dews!

    3a, some 2c & 3b, medium texture, porosity normal, low elasticity :-(

Oh yeah +1 in reducing glycerin and other humectants in the cold/low dews.

Not out completely, but i definitely cut back in my stylers.

    No glycerin here, ever.

If I slack on the moisture in the winter, my hair goes from curly to wavy.

    I went from this
    MImageUploadedByCurlTalk1349632139.816655.jpg

To this (my normal winter pattern)

    ImageUploadedByCurlTalk1349632217.652261.jpg

    After one use of Lustrasilk

    ImageUploadedByCurlTalk1349632255.013540.jpg

If you don't keep up with moisture in low dews, the curls will fall.

Since I'm porous, sealing helps me too. It helps reduce the environmental effect.

I think I am having a slightly different issue here than many of you who have so kindly responded. My curls seem to need a stronger product. The crunch is gone. Yes, the crunch is gone. Now, I know some of you will say, "What's t he problem?" but I like a bit of crunch to maintain my curls, and to give them some body. So: where did the crunch go , and what do I do to get it back??
  • Ml001Ml001 Posts: 354Registered Users
I thinks it's the same basic issue. We need to adjust our product for the season.

Check out these links. Thy are product specific but information is included that I think would apply to all products.

My hair is nicer today. I did that aloe as I mentioned above. I also did a longer steam cap in the shower and then I used a lot more LI. I did not style at all and it has more wave than it did the past couple of days with stylers so I have no doubt it would be back to how I want it had I scrunched well and gelled. Maybe even better. So, a big thank you from me to the responders. :)

Myrna - hopefully you will get your adjustments figured out, too, so you can your crunch back. :)

Maybe try a tad of stronger holding gel? Or another gel altogether. Hopefully you will find something that works soon. I ordered some of the foam myself....I will report back if/when I find a combo that works.
  • MyrnaMyrna Posts: 2,332Registered Users Curl Neophyte
I notice that Pantene's curly mousse is stronger holding. I may try that tomorrow with my biotera gel - I never used that particular mousse with ANYTHING because in the summer, it gave me plenty of crunch - too much in fact - on its own. But that may be different now...

Myrna, have you tried AG Gel/Mousse or Mousse/Gel, I forget what order the name is actually in? That stuff is pimp for me all year round and my dew points are consistently low as I live in a desert. It gives you hold like a gel but volume like a mousse. Pricey, but I don't think any more so than the Deva stuff and it lasts me a really long time.

HI, SunshineGirl, I have heard a lot about AG products here. I have not seen them where I live, although I have not looked in Trade Secrets in the mall. I dont mind paying the price for a good product that works - all those cheap ones that dont work add up as well. That is why I dont mind the Deva Foam - it worked. Ill check out the AG mousse on the products review. Thanks!

I think they may carry them in Ulta, but can"t be sure because I've never stepped foot in one. I so know some local salons sell AG, but don't know if the mousse is part of that lineup. I buy mine from Curlmart.

Yeah, we dont have an Ulta here but I think we are getting one. I dont like buying hair products on line; it adds to the cost, and to the whole experience. I do buy some cosmetic things on line but not generally stuff I "need".

I just purchased a bottle from eBay for under $17 with free shipping. Will report back after I test it out.

Yesterday I made some minor adjustment in my routine. I left a little leave in in my hair - just a tad - and sprayed my hands with the SM Coconut hibiscus moisture mist, ran my hands over my hair before applying a bit more Biotera Gel than I usually use. Then the Deva foam. Yesterday it worked well. That was yesterday. Ill have to see if it works today. Isnt it aggravating that some combo will work great one day and the next, its toast?

(Patting my back, for starting this thread:happy5:) I know its an issue! What I have done so far is just use a little more of my usual product combo, but add the SM shine spray. Today is a great hair day! Lets see how tomorrow shapes up.
