headshot tips?

luvmylocsluvmylocs Posts: 7,578Registered Users Curl Neophyte
i was selected to take a headshot for a local natural hair salons national model search. i'm uber excited. they told me to wear a white t-shirt and "light" makeup.

i'm hoping trenell and any other seasoned models, professionals will weigh in, anything else i should keep in mind for the photo shoot? should the white top be really simple? i have a white shirt that has a keyhole opening sort of above the breast area. do you think that would be okay or should i buy a basic white top? i want to wear eyelashes for pop, simple ones. would that be frowned upon as not natural makeup? what's the best color for my lips given my complexion? any other tips...bring em on!!

I'd wear a plain white button down, maybe with a white tank under it. You could also just wear a t-shirt. i wouldn't wear anything with a pattern, personally.

If I recall your skin tone correctly, you're a medium brown? I think soft rose tones would be pretty. For lips, I'd wear a sheer rose gloss. Most makeup guides rec burgundy, plum and purple for brown skin. Depending on the shade it can be nice. But there are so many other options, especially when you know how to apply makeup.

False lashes would not be considered natural, especially if they're lash extensions. Extensions are way too heavy and look fake and tacky IMO. If you feel comfortable applying individual lashes (rather than strip lashes), that would look more natural.

i'm guessing i need to look for a white top this weekend. here are the pics of the shirt i was referring to. it's slightly wrinkled and doesn't lay flat as i try to photo myself. it doesn't have a pattern on it, just a key hole where you can see my skin.

yeah i don't have nor would i get lash extensions for the shoot. i wanted something natural like what i use when i do wedding makeup i just wondered for a headshot if that would be okay or not. i guess as long as it looks natural and not heavy.

I get my makeup done by someone who specializes in photography makeup whenever I get headshots or another important photo done. Find out if the photos are colour or black and white or both and let the makeup artist know. It might also help to know the kind of hairstyle they're going for - in the face? Tied back? Curly and free or straight and polished? Long extensions or a short style?

The top should be as simple as possible. I like a scoop-neck long-sleeved fitted white T-shirt style top that shows the collarbones.

I agree that individual lashes look more natural than the whole fake lash. You can also get lash extensions that last about a month and are designed to look natural. I'd also make sure your eyebrows are beautifully shaped.

That's not really a keyhole opening IMO. A keyhole is smaller and vertically teardrop shaped, which might be OK for the shoot. But I wouldn't wear the shirt pictured for the shoot.

RELAX, have fun and just be yourself!:thumright:

Nervousness can sometimes translate on camera, so just think of it as a stress-free, cool thing that you get to do!

As far as the shirt, yes, it really should be simple.

Regarding the shirt you have in the photos--I believe the cutout area is too distracting to wear for a headshot; it draws too much attention to your cleavage. For headshots you want the focus to be on your luminous face, smile, eyes...

    Best wishes!

I agree - that shirt is way too distracting. It looks like it is two colours and not just white because of your skin showing through.

I like that top a lot generally but agree with the others, it's a bit complicated for this sort of thing.

I'm thinking for a headshot it could crop strangely in the final photo, and wind up "raising more questions than it answers" if you know what I mean. You want simple, simple, simple to avoid drawing the eye away from your lovely face. :)

Have fun with the shoot! Attitude is so important. Be breezy about it. If you're feeling nervous, ask if you can get a little goofy and do some throwaways early on to help you loosen up. Stick out your tongue, belly laugh some. It works!

thanks ladies! i got a simple white shirt from new york and company. good point about the shirt being distracting. i'm not really a white shirt wearer but that was in my closet. the one i got was $12 (50% off).

wild~hair i love the tip about throw away pics. i actually take my own pics often since i'm growing out my hair in locs again and i like to progress but this is different. if i do well i might be used nationally which is pretty cool!

thanks and i'll surely post whatever pics i get or see in an ad!

Cute -- hey, I remember those!

Sorry you didn't get it but I'm glad you had fun. Did you get to keep any of the pics from the shoot?

Your hair looks great here, by the way!

    thanks girl!

they didn't offer us any pics. i did get a card from the photographers. i may reach out to them and see if i can get a copy of the professional ones. i want to take some professional pics when my hair gets a little longer, maybe later this year or early next year.

thanks for the compliment on my hair. i'm much happier now that i'm loc'ing it again. it's best for me. i'm in my happy place.
