Should I try a PT?

I'm confused about the whole stretch test. It sounds easy enough but I don't know how to tell if my hair expands 20% lol. Anyway, when it's wet its pretty stretchy but doesn't always keep it's shape. I've been reading about protein treatments but I was told by my stylist that I should stay away from protein shampoos and conditioners so I have. Don't I still need some though? I'm wondering if it would benefit me to do a treatment every so often, like once a month or every two months. I'm afraid that if i'm not in need of it though that it'll make my hair dry up and fall off or go bonkers and I don't want that to happen either. So do you all think it'll be ok to just try it once and see what happens? or should I just not take the risk?

2b, low porosity, mildly coarse, medium strands I think, never color treated
2(I have no idea what pattern), low porosity, mix of medium and coarse, dense

Based on your properties you probably wouldn't do well with protein. Typically coarser hair and lower porosity hair don't handle protein well. If you wanted to try, I would try protein in only one product and I would look for either keratin or a silk protein because these seem to be tolerated by some otherwise protein-sensitive people.

Thank you! I do have one new product that I recently purchased that may have protein in it, it's listed but on the bottom. It says "Hyrdolyzed soy protein" and it's the only product I use that has any protein at all, yet when I used it my hair came back feeling so soft and amazing. I don't even know if that's a real protein or if it's enough to matter since it's toward the bottom lol.

Aqua (Purified Water), Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, *Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Leaf Extract, *Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Valencia Orange) Extract, *Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Extract, *Cymbopogon Schoeanthus (Lemongrass) Extract, *Echinacea Angustifolia Extract, *Ginkgo Biloba Extract, *Glycine Soja (Soybean) Extract, *Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract, *Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, *Macrocystis Pyrifera (Sea Kelp) Extract, *Mangifera Indica (Mango) Extract, *Salix Alba (Willow Bark), Butylene Glycol, Centrimonium Bromide, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Natural Fragrance.

oh I forgot to mention lol! It's Giovanni Silky Smooth Deeper Conditioner. I absolutely love it, been using it all week and it's been the best conditioner i've ever used so far.

Gotcha. One thing to keep in mind, since it's towards the bottom of the ingredient list, there's very little protein in the product itself. I feel like I read somewhere that the first 5-7 ingredients in a product are the most important or have the highest concentration. Or something like that. ;)

Wow so first five? That makes things easier for me then because it's sooooo hard to find totally protein free at the drug stores. I think i'll try to keep proteins at a bare minimum, but it's good to know that if there's only a couple of proteins and they are not in the top five or so ingredients it might be worth a shot to try it. Thanks!

That's interesting you say that because I think it's much easier to find protein free products at the drug stores! A few of my fav conditioners are GVP conditioning balm, Tresemme Naturals and Giovanni 50:50. Yes to Cucumbers and Carrots are also protein free but unfortunately make my scalp itchy!

I figured out why, it's because I was looking in the wrong section lol! I was wondering how I was not finding these brands everyone was talking about and then I realized they are in the "natural" section where all the vegan stuff is and it's like lotions and shower products grouped together. Now that I know what i'm looking for and where to find them it's easier. ^_^

I have very protein finicky hair. I have to find perfect balance. My hair likes Giovanni products but not for daily long term use. It will eventually show signs of protein overload. The OP is right - not all proteins are created equal nor are the concentrations of them in each product. You may find the Giovanni is your balance. But, I definitely would recommend you stay away from heavy protein use - and definitely no PTs!!

ETA: A DT once a week might be a good idea too especially if you are using a protein product even if it's on the light side.
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!! :read2:
    My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
    My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
    RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
    LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.
