Coloring Advice?

DepressedCurlsDepressedCurls Posts: 836Registered Users
I really wanna treat myself for a change in a couple weeks. I thought about going and getting my hair dyed. But i cannot make up my mind on which direction to go in. I'm currently dark haired, like the first picture below but I'm considering going a Burgundy or Auburn brown color for fall, like the second and third or going a couple shades lighter into a subtle golden medium brown like the last pictures. I feel like my hair lacks dimension, its such a flat dark color. I really can't decide what would look best. Any advice would be appreciated!

is that your hair in your avatar? if so, its gorgeous and i think burgundy would be really sweet.

Yes that's my hair. :) Thank you! I wanna do Burgundy, just didn't know if it suit my features and skin tone.

Is there some sort of color you could use that isn't permanent, in case it doesn't suit you?

If you tend to have an ivory or creamy colored skin tone with freckles, burgundy may not work that well (at least it doesn't on me). If you have more pink in your skin burgundy should look great.

Anyway, you may never know unless you try.

ETA: For dimension, try using two shades at once. Run one shade through a part in the roots, then another in the part next to it, and so on. Or alternate the whole head. I do this with brown and blonde and I get very natural looking highlights. Good luck! Post back your results if you can.

That first picture is of me, in the navy blue shirt. I'm not very dark at all, I'm slightly beige really. And i have freckles all over but just little dark ones. They're not in big quantities or anything and not on my face.
I don't wanna do it myself, because for some reason it never turns out right. Maybe they can do a demi at the salon. But that's a good idea, maybe they can mix the Burgundy and a nice rich chocolate brown. I just feel like this dark almost black hair color really washes me out. I want warmth and something to accentuate my face, not wash or drag it down!

And also I'm not too pink undertoned. As you can see, i have a slight yellow undertone. :)

And I'd like for my curls to stand out a little more, them being so dark they just seem dull and flat. I wanted them to pop a little more or atleast show the curl off some more. :)

I understand exactly what you mean about not wanting a flat look overall, and wanting some more warmth and dimension so that you don't look washed out. I have lighter hair than you but still brown and I have the same issue. I'd love to add red but it turns orange on me and I definitely have a more yellow skin tone than you with quite a sprinkling of freckles.

I think the salon idea is a good one if you can find one you trust to know about color. If you color it and you like the color but it doesn't exactly seem to suit your skin tone, you might find that altering your makeup (like your blush) might do the trick.

You make me want to try red again.
I love red hair:flower: I'm really interested to see the results - whatever you do. Please post back with a picture when you can.

Yes, i always wear warmer rose blush in the fall with Burgundy and nude lips, and i thought Burgundy in my hair would just compliment all of that very well. I'm definitely going to go have it done. :) and i will post a picture here when i do! A few pictures. I'm excited to see how it turns out.

I've decided to go with this color. It's Revlon Colorsilk Luminista Burgundy Brown, and I'm gonna fo it Friday. Hopefully it turns out exactly like this!

Thanks, i actually didn't end up doing it because a lady came in and she had dark hair, and even though this is geared towards dark hair, it didn't color hers and it still got a little damage from it. I wanna do ammonia free because i don't want to damage my hair too bad but all the other permanents have ammonia. Oh well. :(

I know. I understand about the ammonia. Well, post again if you decide to go ahead with it. Or post in one of the other forums - I'll keep an eye out. Good luck!

Permanent hair color will always have ammonia in it for the most part. A demipermanent is usually ammonia free. Demis last 4-6 weeks and fade out without a harsh line but they won't always cover gray completely. But that may be an option for you.

Colorsilk by Revlon is both permanent and ammonia free. But i don't want permanent because i don't wanna keep it up, and continue dying my hair. I want it to fade out. But my experience with demi and ammonia free is it doesn't dye my hair. My hair just doesn't grab the color for some reason.

Well, I'm a stylist and I don't use drug store brands which is why I didn't know about it. If your hair isn't grabbing your cuticle is probably very compact then.

Yeah cause it tints my new growth but the length of my hair doesn't change, or barely gets darker.

Is that a bad thing? My hair being compact?

Nope not at all. From what you just said though, now it sounds like your length is more porous and the color is rinsing out right away and your new growth is normal. Both extremely compact cuticles and extremely porous cuticles can have difficulty with taking and keeping color in that way.

Hi! I use an all natural permanent color that I buy on Vitacost.com. It's called Herbatint. I also color my hair a burgandy color like the pics you show above. I have been using 5M and I love it. If you wanted to try it, I would probably go with the 4M since your hair is a lil darker brown than mine. Also, it doesn't have any ammonia in it. I love it & haven't found anything else yet that's ammonia-free that colors as well.
Trying CG method again after straightening the past 5 years. Hoping to get my curls back again! :)

I don't blame you! Sometimes I feel that my hair color is just blah. But I don't know if an at-home coloring kit would work on black hair, for highlights. Please, post pictures of your results! I'm sure it'll look gorgeous!!! :)

Same here! My hairs too dark to change and i don't want to mess it up. Besides, there's not many curly heads around here. And the ones that are here, are fried...dyed...and damaged. I'm a healthy natural color and curl, curly girl here. So i think i stand out by just being that. :)

Flat looking colour can be improved by adding shine. You have gorgeous hair and i'm afraid for you that colouring will damage it and it will still look flat, just a different shade of flat. It actually might even look more flat.

I just tried Garnier Fructis sleek finish spray and it gave amazingly light shiny results. My hair looked so much better after I used it.

It does not contain silicones but it does have paraffinum liquidum, which I think is a type of wax and may not be CG.

Thank you, your curls are gorgeous too! I was thinking the same though, i was considering doing my leave in, then an oil, then my gel? Does that add shine? Or maybe using a serum. Like the one from Loreal that's silicone free.

I bought L'oreal Silicone free serum, and used it before my mousse and gel and it gave me some pretty shine. :) my hair still seems a little boring but it's better than nothing. :) definitely gonna keep healthy and not dye!

    Good for you.

You don't know what you've got til it's gone... that is the mantra for people who think they must colour their hair!

Healthy hair of any colour, even grey, is so much nicer than fried dried out frizzy hair.

Exactly, that's why i think. And everytime i dye my hair or highlight it, i miss dark. Every. Single. Time.

While you are young and your skin is firm, dark hair is soooo beautiful.
As you age, darker hair is too harsh on aging complexion, so most mature women tend to use lighter colours, even going to blonde, or rocking the gray hair.

Enjoy your rich dark hair while you have it!!!
