Growing out a Pixie Cut...this is going to take forever!!!

Jencat143Jencat143 Posts: 8Registered Users
Hi Everybody!

So I'm really excited to finally grow out my hair. I've had a pixie-style for over 16 years and I really enjoyed it but its time for a change. I'm getting very envious when I see one of my curly sisters with long hair. I miss the ponytails, up dos, and flowing hair.

I originally cut my hair off in college because I was tired of dealing with it. I now have a four year old daughter with curly hair who is already saying that she wants straight hair. How can it start so young?!? I really want her to learn how to take care of her hair and grow to love it. I'm hoping that by growing my hair back out that it will help her accept her beautiful hair as well.

My hair is extremely coarse and has a tendency to look like a brillo pad in humid weather. I haven't been that nice to my hair since I cut it short because I blow dry it every day and don't deep condition it. Its so short that it doesn't seem to matter too much right now. I'm having to learn how to care for it all over again, which is what brought me to this forum. I'm currently washing with a cleansing pudding and deep conditioning. I hope that this will help me postpone my need for haircuts.

Well, wish me luck and please feel free to join me if you are also growing out!

I will attempt to post pics so that I can see the progress each month.

hi. i am on my 2nd attempt to grow out my pixie. i started to do it last summer, got the hair to my chin. i then decided to thin my own hair( i do not reccommend this) and had to cut it back to a pixie. :( so here i go again.
i bought vitamins, and got all of my hair scarves out. so now i just put a scarf around my hair a take my vitamins. last year doing this i almost grew 2 inches( a tad shy of 2) in 2 months. i just need enough to start tucking behind my ears and then i can ditch the scarves.
good luck. it wasnt too painful last year but without headbands and such i couldnt have done it.

Hi want2bcurly, so sorry to hear that you had to start over. I've already bought lots of headbands, clips, and pins which was actually fun because its been so long since I needed anything like that. I'm sure in six months I'll be sick of them all. I totally understand about getting your hair behind your ears. Thats my first big goal, I know that if I can get it that long then I will be able to do this. It's funny, since I started growing my hair out, I've had constant dreams that my hair is already grown out and I get so bummed out when I wake up: )

i too am growing out my hair, (not from a pixie cut though) though there are a few things that i do believe in when it comes to growing, first of all vitamins! i take biotin and evening primrose oil, (also great for skin and bad monthly pains). i also message my scalp every night with my special mix, key thing there is rosemary oil and messaging. i think it really helps.

my hair: 3b, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
Oils and my own procuts are my hairs best friend
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

yep, im already tired of the scarves and its only been 3 weeks! i could still wear my hair without them but then ill obsess over how poofy, want to trim, thin,... so out of site out of mind.if i can just get to one inch. then ill be able to wear behind my ears, as i said ,and just grow from there. this is the worst stage of it.but we can do it.by sept 30th im hoping to be there.

ill have to try the rosemary oil. i have heard good things about massage and oils.thanks for the tip.:)

no worries, make sure that you mix it with another oil though, cause its pretty strong n should never be applied directly to the scalp

My last official pixie cut was December 2009. Wow. Is that possible? I used to literally get a #6 clipper cut up the back and sides of my head. And it sounds like I have similar hair to the OP. Very thick and very coarse.

I am at shoulder length now and have been aiming for all one length, after a series of botched layered cuts along the way, including a less than perfect Deva cut in NYC. I have had wet and dry cuts during my transition.

I am not sure that one length is the best look for me, but I just want to say I did it once. And it is easier to avoid lopsided layers if you don't have them!

Anyway, I just wanted to wish you swift growth and lots of patience. Some of the in-between stages are not cute. But you will get there!

Scarves? Headbands? Clips? Please tell me what to do with these things. I got my last pixi cut in ... July? I too used to have the clippers used on the sides and back. Just recently (within the last week) I'm losing the last of the spikey-ness. I don't know what to do with it, what to put in it, anything! I've had it this short since April and before that it was never shorter than my chin. Any help appreciated!

I am growing out too. I didn't have a pixie but it was shorter then I have had it since I was something like three. It is now chin length.

I'm also growing out a pixie cut and it takes forever!
When I did not want my hair long it seemed to grow so fast and now that I want it to grow out it feels so slow.

I'm growing my hair too! I just got big chopped yesterday, and have never had longer hair than bra-strap length.

keep it up, girls!! Adding onion to your shampoo, or contraceptive pills (smashed) will work, I've done the pill-thing myself, but now Im following CG-method, so I no longer use shampoo.

i am getting frustrated. i had been trying to tuck sides behind my ears( its grown mabie 1 1/2 inches) but the short layers are really becoming a problem so back to the scarves and trying to let it curl. kind of too short to curl well though, so i feel really frustrated. i just thinned a little to try to get it to lay right, and cut the back ....mistake. now i feel like i have backtracked!uhggg. i have about 3 inches i think until i can possibly do something with it. i feel so ugly right now.i am so tempted to get it cut back into the pixie. i dont know if i can keep this growing:(

it is like going to a place, but having to cross a bridge on your way there.

No matter how scared you are of bridges, if you never cross it you will never get to your destination.

the awkward stage for me has just started and I dont know how many months it will last. But if I dont go through it, I will never get the long curls i've been dreaming about.

    Keep it up!:wav:

How's everyone doing with the growing? I'm at 2 months of growth and have been seeing progress. Every little milestone is encouraging! Right now I'm trying to distract myself with some new CurlMart goodies...maybe a RO conditioner or a leave-in or a styler. I'm even considering an oil for scalp massages! Take advantage of hubby who can't keep his hands out of my shorter hair. ;) He told me last night "Just so you know, even though you're growing your hair out, i'm still gonna play with your hair. You can't take that away from now" :laughing9: Uh-oh, he's been spoiled!

i went back to square one. in oct i got frustrated and cut it, so now i have been growing for 6 weeks. ugh. but it seems to be growing faster than the last time. i think i started this time with parts a little longer . im hoping by the end of march ive grown to end of ears with the longest layer. right now i just use a scarf everyday( ive got many) and pull it bac. it looks like an old lady perm with a scarf. it works for now. and i wont let hubbys hands near my hair;) i have to use sooo much product to get it to look right. keep going! we can do it.

    Hi Ladies!
I've been really bad about posting so I'll have to make up for lost time.
I grew my hair for about 2 months and then got frustrated and cut it back in October. Since then, however, I have let it grow and its actually longer then it has been in almost twenty years. Its in a weird no-style stage right now and I've just been wearing headbands everyday to keep it back. The headbands seem to hide my weird lengths in the bang area and keep the curls out of my ears.
I'm really nervous about summertime though. I live in Richmond, VA and it gets really humid here for like three months straight and my hair gets crazy frizzy when its humid. I've tried so many different products but humidity is one thing I can't seem to stop. I know that I need to hang in there though, because if I can just get through those months then it will be long enough next summer to pull back when I need to.
Its so funny though, the other day I turned my head and felt my hair actually move around and felt so weird and exciting. My hair is super coarse so it never moved when it was really short unless there was like 35-40 mph winds:laughing2:. Its funny how you pay attention to those little things.
I have discovered a shampoo and conditioner though that I'm totally addicted to. I'm loving Shea Moisture's Moisture Retention Shampoo and Mixed Chicks' Deep Conditioner. I still use Paul Michell's Super Clean Sculpting Gel. I know it has sililcons in it but its able to tame my hair like no other!
Good luck to all you ladies who are growing out as well, I'll try to update more often. I've attached a current pic below, its not much longer but its getting there!

yep, u and i were in the same boat. i got frustrated in oct and did the same thing. i also wear scarves and headbands everyday. i am getting tied of it. i cant wait for summer so my curls arent so droopy. alot of product and hairspray right now to keep them the way i want. i blew it out this morning to see how far ive come and no where near where i want to be!i have at least 3 more months until i can ditch the scaves. :(.. your hair looks good, like a real style where as mine does not.
i was at the grocery store today feeling quite ugly and some lady said how my hair was beautiful. yuck... but it did help me feel like i can keep on going with this.
good luck, keep posting and showing pics. i cannot do the pic thing..

Jencat I just moved to Virginia Beach in August from New Orleans. I decided to grow mine out when I moved here because we have such amazing soft water. My hair is about the same exact length as yours but not nearly as curly! I'm hoping by the time it gets humid here I can stretch it into a pony. I was here in the summer though and found that though it does in fact get humid, it's not nearly as bad as back home. Good luck with your journey. This length is the most frustrating part of growing out a pixie for me. I've chopped it and grown it out of one three times now.

curleeangel, I've been to New Orleans twice and loved it but holy cow, thats some humidity down there. So what was your go-to product during those humid days? I'm really nervous about sumer around here. I know that if I get frustrated with my hair and cut it, will be because of the humidity. Good luck to you too!

The humidity in addition to VERY thick hair is why I cut it so short and kept it so short. I used heavy pastes in soaking wet hair, scrunched it up a bit and slept on it. The paste gave it just enough texture and sleeping on it straightened it out a bit. It worked but got boring after so long. I'm at the phase that I hate the most right now.

OK, I haven't cut my hair at all since October and its actually starting to feel like I'm getting somewhere now. The summer has actually not been too bad even though its already humid out. I was so afraid of what my hair would do when it started to grow out but its actually getting easier to care for... thanks to Culrtalk and no shampoo or harsh chemicals!!! Its kind of like my curls aren't so frizzy because they have something to curl to now that its longer. I'm really enjoying a new look too. I had short hair for thirteen years so the change is nice. Anyways, I'll update again soon.

great progress jencat! I'm trying to grow my hair out too. I've been trying for years... lol. I have goals of at least BSL, but I would love to get even longer! I have issues with breakage at my nape, and I usually get fed up with the uneven growth and chop it all back to chin length! I'm swearing to myself I won't get scissor happy this time, no matter what happens.

I'm trying some ayervedic herbs and some oils this time around to try to stimulate growth. Hopefully I have better luck this time, and good luck to everyone else trying to grow!

I'm trying to get from the first picture (taken a few months ago, but the back is still the same length, just trying to get the top layers evened up)

to the second picture (what my hair looked like before the postpartum choppy-chop).

And even though my hubby is dying for my hair to get long again, he just isn't interested in hearing about my hair obsession. This will be the first time in 25 years that I've had long hair that wasn't damaged by curling/straightening irons. I blow dry here and there, but my hair is healthier than I ever remember....almost no frizz, which I didn't think was possible. Woot! Now to wait....
