Hot combing your roots without a heat protectant will damage them.

No you cannot get an accurate depiction of your hair type, porosity, etc. without big chopping.

You could try bun and pin up styles in lieu of weaves and braids.

My mother used a heat protectant before she hot combed it, so will it still be damaged? Thanks for the help! I'll try a bun then, I've never had a bun before. What's a pin up style?

Hot combs get very hot, so too frequent use can cause damage.

Pin up styles are when hair is pinned into an updo.

You could also try bantu knots and use curlformers. These both are ways to curl your hair without heat and helps blend the two textures. Hope this helped :)

Do your research. I'm 16 and a newly transitioner with no one around me that is or has gone through transitioning. I've learned eveything from Youtube, Forums, and websites. Although if using heat, keep it to a minimum.
