Hairspray recommendation wanted

RedCleoRedCleo Posts: 10Registered Users
I don't often use hair spray, since I usually wear my hair curly, so it has taken me a long time to go through the last bottle I purchased, which I hated (I think it was Herbal Essences something, and it was really waxy and gross).

However, I have been using hot rollers a lot lately, and can't get them to last very long (which is not a normal problem for me, as I tend to get more Shirley Temple with curlers). I think the main problem is that it has been super humid here (Minnesota) this summer. I have tried using my curl spray (Aussie brand) instead of hair spray and I just get really dried out hair (and it still falls within an hour of getting ready).

So, since I used up the last of my horrid hairspray this morning, I am now in the market for something new. I'd love something that helped protect against humidity and didn't make my hair feel really dry or waxy. Anyone have any suggestions? I'll take recommendations for curl spray, too. Box store brands preferred, but I could go fancier for the hair spray since I use it less often.

I don't use hairspray but I have come across a recipe for homemade CG spray that I'm itching to try. Basically you cut up an orange or lemon and boil it in 2 cups of water until it's half reduced and presto. I hear you can also add a touch of honey for added hold. While it may sound strange, it may be worth a shot to try something so inexpensive. Who knows, maybe you'll love it :)

I don't use hairspray either, but L'Oreal's Everstyle line has an alcohol free hairspray that I think is also supposed to be humidity resistant.

Just checking because I'm curious about suggestions as well. A can or bottle of hairspray lasts me several years. I'm avoiding alcohol and propellants now, along with specific ingredients, so I can no longer use my Moroccan Oil. It's a shame because that is the most wonderful hairspray. It is not sticky or stiff in the slightest.

I like Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz. Any I have and have seen in the store has had only a bit of SD-Alcohol 40B at the very bottom of a long natural ingredient list.

Someone in another thread said they'd bought some that had alcohol at the top of the list, but I still haven't come across any myself. When I heard that, I did write Giovanni complaining about it. They never commented, but maybe enough customers complained that they quickly went back to the original formula, or maybe the one who mentioned it was just mistaken :dontknow:

Anyway, I like it because it is mostly natural ingredients and even with so little alcohol, it dries quickly. It doesn't build up no matter how many days I go between washings, it's fragrance-free and not stiff, sticky or wet-looking, yet it holds well, even in Atlanta's humidity.

I tried the recipe where you boil the lemon. I didn't get the hold with it that I wanted. Although the L'oreal Everstyle alcohol free hair spray does work well for me. I just wish I could find a hair spray with more natural ingredients. I did run across another recipe though and it was basically sugar water but I'm scared it would act as a humectant or be sticky.

Carrots. I find it more moisturizing than cukes, and I don't use regular hair color (I do henna glosses, and it doesn't fade), so retaining it isn't an issue for me. If you do color, you might prefer it.
