Bentonite clay killed my hair?????

crespocrespo Registered Users Posts: 4
Long story short, I used the clay on my 2c/3a hair (even though I've only seen 4's use it online) and now my hair is more dry than the Sahara desert itself. Will my hair come back to life or did I mess it up forever?? Lol help is appreciated. Thanks

Yes I used trsemme naturals conditioner after, I think the problem is that I let the clay dry a bit on the hair

Did you mix it with anything? I used bentonite clay on my 2c/3a hair as well and had the same drying affect. Although mine was mixed with aloe vera juice and I researched to see if the avj was a protein and I read that it is. I'm very protein sensitve so it made my hair very stiff and dry.

Yup I used it on my hair, not mixed with anything (didn't let it dry or anything) and my hair literally despised it. My hair felt more stripped than it had with any of my sulfate poos. I tried using GVP CB afterwards and my hair still didn't feel normal, so I used a gentle low poo, then Tresemme Naturals, then KCKT and my hair literally felt just on the edge of normal.

I did, however, find a use for my bentonite clay. I made a paste with it and I used it as a face mask and my face LOVED it. It made my pores smaller and my skin super soft.

I love it as a mask as well! No worries if your hair doesn't like it, at least your face does!

Thanks for the replies, my hair is getting back to normal now, ive done no-poo for the past three days in an attempt to let the natural oils do their thing.

I probably wont be using it on my hair again, but it def does make a good face mask

It's EXCELLENT as a face mask!! But it makes a good hair mask as well. Bentonite clay draws out all toxins so I add coconut oil to the mix to keep my hair from being completely stripped. Then follow up with a moisturizing DC.....

Bentonite removes all traces of oil and build up....you prob shold have used Kaolin which is not as nearly as drying and is more softening and suitable for hair in my opinion.

Clays usually have a high PH. I think bentonite clay has a PH level of 8-9. You might want to mix it with aloe vera juice or apple cider vinegar to bring the PH down. Also try to add moisture to the mix like honey/oil. Or use a good moisturizer after rinsing out. HTH.

I have found that I like to use bentonite clay for my face and I use rhassoul clay for my hair. I find Rhassoul (AKA Moroccan Red Clay) more gentle on my hair.

You can also try a shampoo bar with clay in it. I personally use Bobeam's cocoa and rhassoul clay shampoo bar about 1 time a week and its great.

I've never used bentonite clay in my hair, but I've used it in face masks and it can be rather drying! Make sure to good a good moisturizer afterwards. I wouldn't use it in your hair or on your scalp!

I saw a video by Sera explaining that there are different types of bentonite clay. I think one of them is sodium and the other is calcium, I could be wrong. One of them is more drying than the other. She also explains what to mix with it etc. You could always try Rhassoul clay or any other clay.

A homemade Rhassoul clay wash gives my hair nice shine, no moisture issues (I suffer from dry hair) and a boost to my curl pattern. Bentonite clay wash dried my hair out.

I use the Rhassoul clay wash put together by Naptural85.

The clays (bentonite, Rhassoul) can be used safely on all hair types, but the trick is with most home formularies it to customize it. Try adding a bit of olive oil or honey to give it added moisture. You can also do a honey-olive oil Pre-treatment and rinse out and that should help a lot. And follow a leave-in that works for your specific wavy-curly hair needs.

I use bentonite clay once a month & my hair feels super soft & detangles easily with it. My scalp feels refreshed as well. The key is what you mix it with. I use Naptural85's method, but a bit modified. I use Argon oil, ylang ylang, aloe Vera juice, tea tree oil, lavender oil, lemongrass oil, & honeysuckle oil. If i have jojoba oil I use that too.

Interesting. I actually don't mind my hair drying out a bit (because I get over moisturized in a snap). Maybe I will try clay shampoo one of these days. Also, as an aside, it makes a good ingredient in homemade makeup. Lots of people use it in a mix for foundation. Or face mask as others mentioned. So you can always use the leftovers for skin care.

Same with me; my hair is brittle and will not hold moisture...looking for answer to restore back to my natural curl. My hair feels and looks like it's in shock.

I use a bentonite and rhassoul poo bar to cleanse my hair and scalp and love it. .
Yes, it's real. No, you can't touch it. :wav:

I love using bentonite clay on my hair, but I only use it when I have severe build-up on my hair. And I also massage my scalp with coconut oil as a pre-conditioner (and to help detangle the length), let the oil sit for 20-30 minutes. Then I'll apply the bentonite clay/vinegar mixture to my scalp and get directly in the shower. I actually rinse it off last (so the mask still has a while to work its magic), but I think this works better for me that the mask doesn't fully dry (because it has the steam from the shower to keep it moist). This completely removes all build up and the excess coconut oil while not drying out my hair
For reference I'd say I have normal hair (can get away without any shampoo for up to 10 days), 3B-3C mix, medium porosity, elbow length hair

Well, I just want to say that I am a ceramicist in grad school and I get all sorts of clays, including bentonite (otherwise known as montmorillonite), in my curly hair and it's never killed my hair or excessively dried it out, ever, even after 12 hours of being in my hair. You should be skeptical of the products you buy, make sure it's from a reliable source. Also, if you pay more than $3 for a lb of bentonite, you're getting ripped off. That **** costs 25 cents per lb.
