Help me decide: iPhone?

CurliLocksCurliLocks Posts: 10,571Registered Users
Thinking aloud, so to speak, and I'd like your opinions.

problem:

My old 2nd generation iPod Touch is dying. I have a phone that I like, but it's not a smart phone (but I can text). So I'm either going to buy a new Touch or go for an iPhone. It has never been a big deal to have 2 separate devices-- I always take my phone, I usually take my Touch, if I think I'll use it.

solutions:
  • get a new iPod Touch 4th generation
  • get a new iPhone 4s now
  • wait a few months for the new iPhone 5 (which will have 4G, and may have a metal back and bigger screen)
Maybe I should make it a poll. Done. Oh, and we have Verizon for cell service, if it matters.

Wait two weeks for the apple announcement, which should include what features the new 5 will have as well as debut date :)

That's what I've been thinking. :) But the 4s is on sale THIS week for $149 at Target. :tongue3:

Hubby, who is usually Mr-Techy-who-needs-the-latest-and-greatest, is wanting me to go get the 4s right now! LOL

Then I read this, and other reviews: iPhone 5 rumor mill begins to grind | The Salt Lake Tribune
and I wonder if the new goodies are worth it. I don't mind a larger screen but I don't want it taller, and I won't like it if the ports are different because we all share the accessories right now. :dontknow:

The 4 will be free & the 4s will likely be no more than $100, possibly even less when the new one comes out.

How "in need" of a phone/touch are you right now? Can you wait until Oct/Nov, which is the likely release date of the 5? I'm not an apple expert but I highly doubt the 4s will increase in price again before the 5 comes out.

I'd get the 4S--either now or when the 5 comes out. It doesn't sound like you need the top of the line new gadget since you don't have that now. I just have a 4 that's nearing the end of its contract and it works great and is plenty fast on the internet. I probably won't even upgrade to the 5 right away because my current phone is just fine.

I'd wait for release date info. If it's close. The 4 and 4s will go down.

4s is worth it just for Siri, IMO.

I never replaced my computer when it died. This phone does about 90% of what I used my computer for.

Keep it coming! I appreciate all the responses. :)

As of right now, my Touch is working, but it's dying fast. I have had to completely restore it 3 times in as many weeks. When we went to the Apple store to get son a new Touch (his completely died), they did an even more intense type of wipe. I had to come home and restore all my stuff again. But so far it's working a little better. But I can't play most of the games I was playing, and can't run anything new. So maybe another month and it could be dead.

Hubby is the one that's more in the hurry. He wants one of us to have a phone or device with a data plan for vacation. We may not have wifi and we could turn the iPhone into a hotspot. That will be in July. So we *can* wait for the announcements, if they do any for sure.

And yeah, I guess the prices should only drop from here on out, but Target's the only one at $150, the rest still want $200, but maybe they'll drop soon. When I did buy my Touch, it WAS the latest and greatest for the time. I'm just not one to go out and buy the latest version when my current one is working, so I want to be sure I choose the best device for my needs because I won't be getting a new one for probably 3 years! LOL

I'm just too frugal and overthink these kinds of purchases. (so hubby says!) :p Actually, I'd drop the $150 today for the iphone--it's the $360 for the data plan I hate to spend. We don't have any data plan as we usually have wifi wherever we go. And that's the reason I think of getting just another Touch. But then there could be times I'd like to be able to access things where there may not be wifi. I give myself a headache! :cheese:

i got a 4s in feb when my other phone (not a smart phone) was on the fritz. i love it!! it makes life so easy!! reading email, the apps, pics, everything is just better. i even used it daily when i was in italy for various things. now i use it a lot for the myfitnesspal app. i don't use siri much at all and i'm sure i'm not even using 15% of the goodies on my phone but i'm still really happy with it. even with the 5 coming out it'll be awhile before i care about an upgrade.

that all being said, if you can wait you would get a cheaper price unless the 5 gets lots of bad reviews in which case the 4s will be a hot commodity because people will want to grab it before they stop making it. that i don't know.

I'd say wait for the iPhone 5. I had an iPhone 4 (not the 4s), and I'm on Android now. (Samsung Galaxy S II). I would be interested in what it will have to offer...but that's just me.

Okay, you don't "need" a high tech phone...so then you don't an iPhone period, if you follow that logic. Whether you get a 4, 4s or wait for the 5, an iPhone is a smart phone...one of the smartest. If finances are an issue, than get an iPhone 4, for next to nothing (as another person mentioned).

Also, once you get a smartphone, and start doing stuff on it, it will be hard for you to ever go back to a phone with just a dial tone, and texting. Smartphones do such much, and I've come to rely heavily on my phone. I hardly ever "talk" on it, but I can run my life more efficiently, because of it.

But then again, I'm love technology. I'm one of the "has to have the latest and greatest".

    1. sis has a droid and I don't like it (not sure which one though)
    2. I have too many apple apps that I use and love that won't switch over.

I don't need a smart phone but ONLY because I have my Touch! I do everything on that thing! When it froze and I couldn't get into it for appointments, etc my world stopped. Haha! That's why I either need to make the jump to an iPhone, or get a new ipod Touch. I used to keep paper calendars, notes, etc and hubby got me started with a Dell pocket PC about 10 years ago, and I never looked back! :D Yeah, we're a techy family.

I have a 3GS that works just okay. It's slow and seems to be getting slower. It also has a lot glitches now. I have a 4th gen iPod Touch that I use for taking pictures, since the camera is a lot better. It's only 8GB therefore I can't keep movies, as well as all of my songs and apps on it. I'm going to wait for the iPhone 5 since its release isn't too far off.

This is what I have and yesturday afternoon my home button and charger stopped working. Right now I've gone back to my LG Slide (its taking forever to text, so this isn't going to last long!) while I figure out what to do.

I can spend the $50 and get the charger and home button fixed in my phone, and wait for the 5. OR, just bite the bullet and go get the 4S. Blah...I hate figuring this stuff out!

This is a biggie for me! I have too many accesories that would need to be replaced and I really just don't use the phone for anything that important (email/facebook/texting/iPod) that it's worth the new features.

I can't vote. I have an Android Infuse, which I like way better than my old iPhone.

And I'd never have Verizon. I'm strictly, only, AT&T.

So I'm no help, but of course I had to stick my nose in.

I had a 3. JUST a 3!! I had to upgrade because my iPhone was dying! LoL! I got the 4s, and it's pretty great. Much faster and brighter than my old 3 was. If you have it you won't need a Touch. Unless you just WANT one. I have an old iPod Nano and use it almost everyday, so there's nothing wrong with having 2 devices. :)

I've been suffering from the same dilemma, replace my antique 3G with the 4s or wait for 5? But as 5 hasn't been announced and 4G isn't available in the UK and probably won't be until the middle of next year I'll be getting the 4s this weekend.

Yeah, I'm not happy about Apple not giving us any info on the 5. :(

So I may just go down this week and get an iPhone 4s. :)
Then we won't have to worry about different accessories, etc. and we'll have a small data plan for traveling, etc.

It will be much better than the old Touch I have anyway.

On a side note, hubby finally got his New iPad and loves it! :)

This just came out, and will affect those with data plans. Right now, it's an option, but if I activate a new data plan later, it will be mandatory. That kind of forces our hand to get it NOW. We already lost out on the unlimited (like my sis got).

Good grief, it sounds like we would have been paying even MORE for the plan we just signed up for if we had waited!! We're already paying for more than we'll likely use during a normal month, but it was the best option for the phones we got.

    Mercy.

We did the nationwide 700 shared minutes.

We don't have a home phone and originally thought we should go with the 1400 minutes, but after we realized most of our family has Verizon as well and it won't count against our minutes to talk with them we decided to give the 700 a try. Plus Mr. Spring has a work phone (that they're allowed to use for personal calls) that I use to call my mom since she only has a land line. Generally when I talk to her it's for an hour or more every few weeks and my minutes would go quick.

The only thing that helps me justify spending so much on a cell phone plan is that we don't have a home phone.

So then you have a $30 data plan to share? Or each phone?

I'm going by Target to check it out.
