Medium texture, normal porosity and elasticity...let's share!

I would love to see what products others with these properties are using along with favorite combos, techniques, etc.! I realize it also depends on where you live, weather, etc. I've tried reading other curlies/waveys signatures to see who has similar properties but it can get overwhelming!!! I though it might be nice to have a thread where we could share this information. :) thank you in advance!!!

I will start first. I live in a dry climate where the average dew point is in the 30's year round, so I've recently tried using products without glycerin or where the glycerin is not high in the ingredients list and liking the results.

Great topic! I'm new to CG, just got my hair properties and am still trying to sort out which products my hair loves, which it hates, and in what combinations. Here's what I've got in my stash so far:

Low Poo: Jessicurl Gentle Cleanser, Burt's Bees More Moisture with Jojoba
RO: Jessicurl Aloeba, Burt's Bees More Moisture with Jojoba
LI: JC Aloeoba, JC TooShea!, CJ Beauticurls Leave In
Stylers: JC Gelebration Spray, Confident Coils, CJ Pattern Pusha, Zotos Pure Elements Alcohol Free Medium Hold Gel
    Testing: JC Rockin Ringlets

Trying to decide if CO-washing will work for me, and have used the BBMM for that a couple of times. Still looking for a frizz killer...I live in hot, humid Houston, Texas and don't know what will work here.

Tried a couple of curl refreshers (JC Awe Inspiraling, Deva Mist-er Right) and hated the waxy sticky feeling I got from them.
    2C/2B; Med-fine texture, Normal porosity/elasticity, med-thin density; Color treated
Cleanse: Jessicurl GLS, L'Oreal EverCreme cleansing conditioner
    Co-Wash: SNES, VO5 Kiwi Lime
RO/LI: Jessicurl Aloeba and TooShea!, KCKT, GVPCB
Stylers: KCCC (HG!), SM C&S Milk, BRHG, Jessicurl Gelebration Spray, Confident Coils

My hair type and hair products are all listed in my sig.

I live where it's humid half the year and dry half the year. I really don't change my routine much from season to season, tho I tend to use more Ojon in the winter when my hair loses definition.
    --I'm located in Western PA.
--I found NC in late 2004, CG since February 2005, started going grey in late 2005.
--My hair is 3B with some 3A, texture-medium/fine, porosity-normal except for the ends which are porous, elasticity-normal.
--My long time favorite products are Suave & VO5 conditioners, LA Looks Sport Gel, oils, honey, vinegar.

Curlsnswirls, we're not completely hair twins, but based on your product list, it looks like our hair likes the same things. My hair is fine, normal porosity, and normal elasticity. Although it's fine, it's pretty dense, so I can handle some heavier products. I also live in a dry climate (Colorado) so the dews are in the 20-30 range most of the year (with the exception of a few months in late spring/early summer when dews are above 40). So, most of the time I try to avoid glycerin/humectants too high up the list, and my hair craves moisture big time. Here are some of my fave products so far:

    Wash:
    CJDF
    L'Oreal Evercreme

    Conditioner (RO):
    Tresemme Naturals (moisture)
    Suave Naturals (everlasting sunshine)
    GVP conditioning balm
    DB pumpkin seed

    LI:
    Giovanni direct LI
    SM curl & style milk
    As I Am LI
    CK satin roots
    Cure care

    Stylers:
    DB curl styling cream
    DB cream gel
    SS CEJ
    BS curls stretch gelee
    JC RR
    FSG

    Oils:
    EO serum
    Grapeseed oil
    Apricot oil
    Sweet almond oil

I have become a hopeless PJ, and I too love to experiment. So far, I am LOVING anything from DB. I haven't tried much of the CK line, but love the LI and would like to try some of the other products. Same with BS- the gelee is awesome, and I would like to try more of that line. I guess my hair prefers the more natural, boutique type products. I ordered a slew of samples of LI and gelee type products from kathymack (including CRN, Marie Dean, UFD, Shescentit, BS, etc.) and have been having tons of fun. I don't really like traditional gels, and have found that I prefer curl creams, cream gels and gelees. I prefer to have soft, touchable hair and will sacrifice some hold/definition for that. I used to think I had a protein sensitivity, but I think I just needed to get the protein/moisture balance correct, and cut down on humectants. I've never tried straight coconut oil, but my hair seems to like it in products so that's on my list.

Jsuzkelley, we do like/use a lot of the same products! There are a couple I haven't tried though, the L'oreal Evercreme and the As I Am leave in. I've been wanting to try them both out because I've been hearing good things about them. I have more products than what are listed in my siggy :tongue1:....those are just the ones I use more consistently. I want to start experimenting by using the same product combos for one week at a time and see which ones work consistently. This may help narrow down my faves. There are few more products that I'd like to try though, CJ pattern pusha, the two I mentioned already, BB's FSG, As I Am jelly, and can't remember which others right now. I do like to experiment:cheese:. I was really liking cur keeper but I seemed to get a little dry after a while. I was amazed at being able to use just one styler and nothing else...I may bring it back out and alternate with other products to keep my hair balanced.
My hair hasn't met an oil it didn't like so far, which I'm glad about. Off to experiment some more.......:thumbright:

I felt the same way about the curl keeper - I like that it doesn't way down my hair at all, no matter how much I use, but my hair did seem more dry. Maybe with the right product combo it would be great. I like the AIA leave in - its pretty light weight but still moisturizing. I also want to try the jelly and the co-wash (heard good things about both if these). And BB FSG has been tempting me for a while - just not sure yet that I want to spend the money on something I can make myself. But all the additional add ins she offers...very tempting. Tomorrow I'm going to try my samples of the DM hair whip and miracurl jelly - hopefully its another hit :)

Jsuzkelley, how are you liking the Oyin hair dew? I've been eyeing that and a few other items. I'm thinking of ordering the snack pack but curlmart is out of them.

Sorry for taking so long to reply - just saw this. I actually haven't been using it recently - it is very moisturizing and I've sort of put it aside until winter. I did like it though - it's a thick consistency but melts into my hair easily. And it smells so yummy.

Thank you! Just wanted to update...I've been auditioning a few mousses (?). I've been pleasantly surprised at the results so far. First of all I never would have thought that I could get away with just some leave in and one styler!!! I have been having awesome results with either just a LI and curl keeper and now a LI and just mousse!!! So far I've tried the 3-in-1 mousse (purple can), GVP PM sculpting foam and joiwhip. I like them all..now to see which one holds up the best. There is one more I want to try, beyond the zone from Sally's. I'm loving the simplicity of just one styling product. I may not get away with it during the winter, but for now it's working!! I definitely need to go through my product stash and clear out the cupboards!! I'm narrowing down my search for staple products! Although there are a few conditioners I'd like to try out from Oyin and one from ingredients to die for :D.

I just got my properties from Live Curly Live Free, and they said I am medium, normal, normal! I had thought my hair was fine with low porosity, so I think it leans slightly that way, but I guess I'm close to the middle.

I live in Northern Virginia, which has crazy high dew points right about now. I can't really use a leave-in conditioner in this weather. I've tried out a bunch of products since I went CG, including:

    Deva Low-Poo (a-ok)
Deva OneCondition (too moisturizing, had to switch to something else for the summer, also has hops which causes me to break out)
Deva Mister Right (not feeling it, doesn't really do much except cause frizz and it stinks)
Deva Angel (eh, kinda sticky, could have more hold)
Kinky Curly Curling Custard (love it, works great)
    Kinky Curly Knot Today (eh)
Loreal EverSleek Serum and Cream (smooths frizz pretty well, smells great)
    Yes to Carrots conditioner (good)
CJCCCCL and AG:recoil (too heavy and sticky for summer)
Aloe Vera Gel (not enough hold)
Curl Keeper (like it, have to use a lot)
AIF (super strong hold, kinda drying)

So as you can see, my routine is still a work in progress. If anyone else with similar properties wants to chime in that would be great!
2b/c wavy modified CG since July 2012
medium texture, normal porosity, normal elasticity
hair likes protein, doesn't like oils, easily OC'd

    low poo: JCHCC, CJGCS
    RO/co-wash/LI: YTCarrots, DB Pumpkin Seed
stylers: a bunch of stylers that are all pretty much the same (KCCC, UFDCM, CRCM, CKCJ) or ArcAngel if I need more hold
    DT/PT: CJRM, CNPF

    Hi all!

First post, but been lurking for a while.

I also just got my live curly live free analysis and I'm normal porosity, medium density, normal elasticity too! I think I lean coarse and low po, but not a huge difference in dos and dont's.

I'm glad you started this thread for us!

So I normally live in Seattle which has nice to just under not so nice dew points all year. But I've spent this summer in south Florida with crazy humidity and high dew points in the 70s.

I finally figured out that less is so much more in this summer tropical weather.

    Here's my easy regime:
Alaffia Shea and Virgin Coconut Enriching shampoo.
    KCKT as RO.
Kiss my face upper management gel scrunched in wet hair. Scrunched wet hair to damp with Tshirt. Gel scrunch again. I don't plop! (blasphemy, i know, but it just doesn't work for me). Then let gel set then SOTC with another tshirt and I've got big soft bouncy waves and little to no frizz. Happy waves abound! With only three products!

I'll be experimenting more when I get back to Seattle. But I think I'm going to keep on keeping on with the Less is More for this kind of hair texture.

    What do you think?

I'm also thinking that the Alaffia has too many emollients and it can make my hair stringy not clumpy. I really love the smell so Hm. Anyone have any suggestions there?

    Thanks!

I have been having consistent awesome results for a while now with a few products and I'm in love!! These are now my staples!!

I either cowash (conditioner or cleansing conditioner), use a shampoo/soap bar or an occasional low poo.
Use a variety of conditioners for rinse out and leave in.
    Seal with a little oil.
Use either curl keeper, BB's or Truepolaris (etsy) FSG or BB's Mudd.

That's it!! My routine is now simplified and I'm having fantastic results. I love not having to layer a bunch of products. I just hope these work in the winter. If they do, then I'm set!!

Hi all! I just got my hair analysis back too! I was surprised to find that I have medium texture (not coarse), medium porosity (really?) and elasticity. I was kinda hoping one would come back as really extreme so I might have an explanation as to why my hair is always soooo frizzy. But alas no. My stylers are in my siggy.

Curlsnswirls - I also live in a very dry climate (CO). I have been scared to try SSCEJ and CKCJ because of the salts (I think my hair hates these but it could just be the dry climate). Any thoughts on these products? I am loving the combo of KCCC and AIF with KCKT as a leave-in, though I might be overdoing the KCKT because my hair kinda gets limp as the day goes on. Glad you are having good results with FSG and CK! I need to try both again.

I'll have to try the KCCC/AIF combo. I can't seem to make KCCC work for me lately :(. I liked mixing KCCC with SSCEJ, although I haven't tried it recently. Mag sulfate (Epsom salt) doesn't seem to bother me when used in moderation. I couldn't seem to get consistent results with Jessicurls RR or CCSS, maybe too much salts? I do love SSCEJ though, it plays well with other products for me. I try to use products with little or no glycerin. Although I do get fantastic results with CK.

I tried the KCCC/AIF combo tonight over Oyin hair dew. So far my hair looks great. I will see how it fairs tomorrow. I was really hoping to get KCCC to work for me again since I have a jar and a half. I remember when it did work, it gave me really great 2nd day hair. I'll report back.

Hi everyone! I got my hair analysis results back a bit ago and I've joined your medium-normal/normal ranks :) We have such a small corner of the forum!

I'm still very new to this whole thing, so I haven't done a ton of experimenting, but here are some of the things I've tried:

    Cleansing:
    • VO5 and Suave Naturals for co-wash (I think I prefer Suave--I use the Everlasting Sunshine one).
    • CJ Daily Fix (only tried it once, still experimenting!)
    • L'Oreal Cleansing Conditioner--I like this. The smell is strong, but I like it.
    RO:
    • GVPCB--I've used since the beginning and I LOVE IT.
    • IEC--only tried it once (protein experimenting)
    LI:
    • Tresemme Naturals Moisturizing
    Styling:
    • LALSG
    • FSG--LOVE THIS.
    • AIF
    • KCCC--my hair liked this a lot, but it made me break out :(
    • Coconut oil
The supersoaker method works pretty well for me :) Plopping is so-so (may be a technique issue).

    PT:
    • GVP K-pak--my hair really liked this! It was soft and springy and shiny.
Hair did NOT like the following:
    • SheaMoisture Style Milk--it made my waves DIE (though my hair was very soft). I *think* it might be the silk protein in it, since I've tried straight up coconut oil in my hair without problems.
    • SS Repairing Protein Treatment--this was just okay. I may not have moisturized enough after? I did use the SS Deeply Decadent for my DT, but part of my head felt kind of frizzy and dry (boo).

I'm still trying to find a good moisture/protein balance; my next plan for experimentation is to try a RO conditioner with keratin.
    2c-Dry climate
Slightly Coarse/Low to Normal Elasticity/Varied Porosity (low at roots, higher at ends)
    High density
    Mod-CG since 2012

    Current Routine (Mod-CG):
Cleanser/Co-wash: Oribe The Cleanse / AIA Coconut Co-wash
    RO: GVP CB
LI: Yes to Carrots Pampering Conditioner
    Super Soaker
Styler: Homemade FSG with a small bit of coconut oil and LALSG
    DT/PT: CJCR / Ion Reconstructor

Hmmm, very interesting. I'm avoiding proteins like the plaque at this point. When i seed the word Keratin in a product I put it down. I really love Aubrey organics conditioners.....I've tried the GVP cb but didn't care for it. I do, however, really like Loreal cleansing conditioner.

I've been using them sort of sporadically...I'm still trying to figure out how much I can handle. I dye my hair and was in a straightening frenzy right before I started CG/found this site, so I have/had some damage ;)

I tried the Aubrey Organics GPB (yet another protein experiment) but didn't like it (found it too oily)...that was during my SheaMoisture adventure, though, so maybe I didn't give it a fair shot. I've seen good things about the Honeysuckle one? You have a bunch in your siggie! Do you have a favorite?

I've been using them sort of sporadically...I'm still trying to figure out how much I can handle. I dye my hair and was in a straightening frenzy right before I started CG/found this site, so I have/had some damage ;)

I tried the Aubrey Organics GPB (yet another protein experiment) but didn't like it (found it too oily)...that was during my SheaMoisture adventure, though, so maybe I didn't give it a fair shot. I've seen good things about the Honeysuckle one? You have a bunch in your siggie! Do you have a favorite?

I really like the white camilia conditioner as a leave-in and to comb through and the island tropicals as a deep conditioner. It really gets the hair soft.

    texture-medium/fine, porosity-normal, elasticity-normal

I haven't been on this site since Sept 2012. I logged on today and realized that I first went on my CG journey in 07/2011. WOW, time flies.

After first trying the Deva products, I found that my hair did not like protein. While everyone had rave reviews for Deva, it left my hair feeling like a brillo pad.

I conditioned like crazy, switched to products with NO protein, and my hair improved (as much as it can in HOT/HUMID Houston). A couple of months ago I Chopped 6 inches off ( it was mid-back) and instead of improving my hair, my hair got worse. Although it felt soft, it was always frizzy (looked frizzy even when wet) and now my 3a/3b curls were looking more like 2c/3a. It finally dawned on me today what the problem could be... LACK of Protein. I did a protein treatment today and although I cannot say that my hair is super curly, I did get some of my bounce back and I am noticing much less frizz. Hmmm... go figure.

Throughout this time though, the products that I use have not changed. I still love all the products in my signature (GVP Conditioning Balm as well). I guess I will just have to do a protein treatment maybe once or twice a month.

KCCC is a bit heavy for my weak curl pattern, but it is the only gel that does not leave my hair feeling sticky or coated so i keep using it. I still haven't tried Curl Keeper although I have been dying to forever. Maybe I will splurge this summer.

I hope your hair improves and gets back to "normal" soon.
You just reminded me I probably need to do a protein treatment too....and possibly a DT.
Still using the products in my siggy with success. I need to go through all my extras and get rid of the products I don't use anymore.

curlsnswirls: I'm wondering if you still use the Truepolaris FSG or just the BB? I've been considering BB' s FSG or Mudd for awhile, but the Truepolaris curly gel looks intriguing. Do you use the custom version of either? If so, what do you add?

We aren't perfect hair twins, but we do have similar properties; mine is fine, normal to low porosity, normal elasticity. I live in rainy Washington State so our climate is different. I also have to be very careful with protein and I have to avoid glycerin completely. I have had the most success with Jessicurl Too Shea (RO/LI) and Weekly Deep treatment (RO), but most of her styling products have glycerin so I can't use them. I really like the JC Confident coils( JCCC), but I get white flakes by the end of the day. That's why I thought I might like the Truepolaris, since it has Mag Sulfate in it like the JCCC. My hair seems to really like it. My favorite gels are Uncle Funky' s Daughter Curly Magic ( UFDCM) and CJ Pattern Pusha (CJPP), but UFDCM is very expensive with shipping (you get a nice large bottle though) and CJPP gives me inconsistent results. I hope you don't mind if I "stalk" you a little bit.

    Replied to your PM :).
I forgot to mention, I LOVE tresseme naturals moisturizing conditioner. I use it as a rinse out mainly but also as a co-wash and a leave in. Still loving my TruePolaris FSG and BB's FSG and mudd. TruePoaris I get her regular formula...BB's I prefer the "foolproof" version. HTH. :)
I'm also liking UFDCM and Curl Queen. Another favorite is KCCC. I've only tried CJPP once or twice, so nt sure about that. AOMM is good as well.

Out of curiosity, how often do you guys do a PT/DT? I'm still trying to figure out my moisture/protein balance and I think it would help to work out a "routine" that seems common for my hair type :)
    2c-Dry climate
Slightly Coarse/Low to Normal Elasticity/Varied Porosity (low at roots, higher at ends)
    High density
    Mod-CG since 2012

    Current Routine (Mod-CG):
Cleanser/Co-wash: Oribe The Cleanse / AIA Coconut Co-wash
    RO: GVP CB
LI: Yes to Carrots Pampering Conditioner
    Super Soaker
Styler: Homemade FSG with a small bit of coconut oil and LALSG
    DT/PT: CJCR / Ion Reconstructor

This probably won't help you, but I'm pretty inconsistent when it comes to PT or DT's. I was doing them about once every 7-10 days and my hair loved it but somewhere along the way I got busy, distracted, lazy....and now just do them when I think about it. I kinda go according to how my hair feels.

When im consistent, I like to do atleast a DT once a week and a protein maybe every 10 days. I do use products and conditioners with protein so don't do PT's that often. This reminds me I need to purchase some CJ Repair me, I've heard great things about it. Sometimes instead of a DT I do a heavy oiling with either coconut oil or EVOO. I slather my hair and let it sit for about an hour and then wash as normal. My hair loves it!

Tried the L.A. looks power spikes gel over moptop yesterday and my hair turned out very nice..soft and shiny!!! I love that it has no glycerin.(altough my hair tolerates it in moderate amounts)....don't care for the scent, although it doesn't linger after hair is dry. I also picked up a bottle of LALSG to try out one more time...the bottle I tried before was very old. I'm willing to give it another go since its so cheap. :D I want to try the L.A. looks nutra gel but can't find it locally. I may break down and order it online. I really like to have inexpensive products I can get locally just in case I run out of my good stuff. I picked up one more styler, SM smoothie. I plan to use it as a curl cream.
Anyone else use the SM smoothie? How do you use it and what is your favorite combo?? Also any of the LA gels..thanks!

After testing out the LA gels, smoothie and recently ordered Mop C curl cream...I should be done experimenting for a while.
I've realized I keep coming back to my good old favorites that do not let me down. There are some products that I just had to try but again, want to stick to my favorites.
I'm also so excited that iherb carries kinky curly products!!!! The whole foods I have bought mine from before is almost an hour away, so this makes it nice..plus they have discount codes and you can earn points.
    On with the experimenting.......

My protein treatments are far and few between and they're pretty lite at that. I do a DT about every 10-20 days.

Thanks y'all, that does help! I do need to be more regular about DTs for sure. I'm such a slacker-pants. My hair doesn't seem to have the typical reactions to protein and OCing as most people though. Boo!

To answer product questions--the only LA Looks gel I've tried is the Sports Gel, and it does alright, but I live where there are low dews so the glycerin is often a problem. I'd really love to find something with lots of hold (I like crunch) and low humectants.

I live in a dry climate where the dews are low as well. I can actually use products with glycerin even in the winter as long as (1) the glycerin is at least
The 4th ingredient or lower in a product and (2) I use a more moisturizing leave in under/with it. The LA looks power spike gel didn't really have a super strong hold but it still worked nicely. BRHG is definitely a strong hold gel. I use no more than a nickel size of it for my tailbone length hair. I usually use it on top of my regular gel or I've had success mixing it with AOMM.
