Need help with boyfriend's hair!

virginbluevirginblue Posts: 194Registered Users
Hi I was hoping to get some help about how to help my bf transition to the CG method (I've never told him the name of the method. They should change it to the curly person method LOL.) He seems enthusiastic about it because he is so frustrated with his hair, but he's not the type to look through websites and forums, so I need advice about how to teach him about his hair. When he gets out of the shower he has really nice 3a I would guess curls. He dries it then COMBS OUT THE CURLS. So frustrating! Anyway, I have already bought him some co washes, conditioners and gels to try out and I'm going to give him a final sulfate wash and a DT today but I don't know what tips I should give him about styling. His hair is thick and about chin length. Unfortunately he recently got a bad cut where they thinned his hair with a razor and the layers are too short and they bunch up on the top of his head. His mom lovingly refers to it as a "Jerry Seinfeld mullet". Poor baby :( I'm not sure if he should scrunch or rake in product. I'm afraid he might think scrunching is girly and also that it might exaggerate the mushroom head. He really wants to grow his hair long because he is half Indian and it's important to him and his family. His hair texture normal or thick and I would say his density is either normal or high. His hair properties are so different than mine, so I am having trouble figuring this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

;-)Ha ha, I know what you mean! My husband has gorgeous wavy hair, which he combs when dry, but if he leaves to air dry, it develops lovely beachy curls, and he does little to get it that way, as opposed to me, with my primping and preening routine, lol! In the past, he has raked in product, ie. wax, as scrunching seems an odd concept to him. However, the comb is his best friend, so until I can prise that out of his hands, I ain't gonna win, lol!:laughing1:

I primp and preen too lol. Thanks for the reply! I'm glad someone else knows how I feel. I'm trying to handle the situation delicately...I don't want to hurt his manly pride lol. I tried to make the DT like a treat for him by massaging his head and just being sweet to him :love7: I gave him the co washes, conditioners and gels and just gave him a brief rundown. I'll let him do what he wants with the info and hopefully he will take an interest and start to love his hair! Also, he told me today he already thinks his hair looks better :D

I think as long as you give him products and methods that are beneficial to his hair then don't overdo it by making him style it differently this soon lol.

If he still gets hair cuts then talk with him about asking the barber to let the top parts of his hair grow and only taper the sides etc. That way he can get used to keeping it curly.

Thanks for the reply PRINCETON. It's nice to get a guy's perspective too ;) He seems to be doing fine on his own and I'm trying not to get into his hair business LOL. I just give him compliments when his hair looks especially nice

Half the battle is getting him to accept and embrace his curls. I resisted mine for years by wearing it short but about seven years ago (at age 33) I decided to wear it longer, going anywhere from 6-8 weeks between haircuts. Right now I'm going every three months. My reason is, "well, I'm 40 and I still have it." I've been using the Garnier Fructis Curl Shaping Spray gel and yes, "I scrunch."

My bf had long, around mid-back length hair he kept in twists (before he dreaded his hair and then cut it all together due to illness affecting it) and I looooved playing in his hair! I'd say he was a 4a like me, but his strands were definitely finer and a lot less porous than mine. He gets to use all the nice, cheap stuff that irritates my skin (Herbal Essences, Pantene) but refused to go CG. I don't blame him cause shoot, it's his head. Lol. He said he's gonna grow out his hair again when the weather gets cooler so I'm soooo excited to be able to do his hair! He's gonna let me, darn it...

I had nothing to offer. I just thought this was a cute topic. Lol

Yes, you scrunch! Maybe I can change his mind! lol. He only washes with condish, but he does have trouble accepting his curls. I think part of it is that he identifies as Indian although he is half white (I mean Native American if that wasn't clear, sorry) so curly hair is weird to him. Also, he still uses the flat iron ON WET HAIR. Drives me nuts *sigh*

Haha I still appreciate your input! I'm soooo jealous of people who can use w/e on their hair while my hair is so picky. I hope your bf lets you do his hair. I love having a curly bf

Hi...two male traits got me to embrace my man curls: sex & laziness. My girlfriend promised me a "late night suprise" if I left my hair alone. Once I realized how easy it was to air-dry, it was a no brainer -- more time for me to sleep. Ha! . . . dave in austin, texas

Haha! Yes, sex, the great motivator. I don't mind employing some female craftiness if my bf will stop brushing and straightening his hair ;) I appreciate your honesty. It made me laugh lol

I can relate. I had trouble as well for a long time. Which is why I wore it short for 20 years until seven years ago. I especially scrunch the back and run my fingers through the sides and top. He uses a flatiron. Funny you say that. One day I had, not a job interview per se but just kind of an informal meeting with a potential employer. Just to make it look smoother, I used the blowdryer and round styling brush. Then my wife's curling iron. However, no way would I do that everyday.
