Swavy hair and visiting a curl/wave stylist - advice?

clickchickclickchick Posts: 29Registered Users
I have an appointment with a new stylist shortly to get a long overdue cut/trim. She is supposed to be a wave and curl specialist and while I am excited, I'm actually feeling a little intimidated. Because my wave pattern on the canopy of my hair is pretty weak and moderate underneath, I've never had a stylist comment on my wave let alone suggest a hair cut to enhance what I have. I guess I still have "curly imposter" syndrome and am a little nervous to strut in there and talk about my wave and ask for a special cut.

Anyone else have stylist anxiety? I think I am just going to tell her that I want to enhance what I have and don't want to be a slave to the flat iron, straightening shampoos (yeah, right) and the blow dryer anymore. Any tips for me?

Oh, and my avatar is older. I have a grown out inverted bob that's about shoulder length now. I think I want to even up the bottom and have some layers put in at the top. That way more of the wavier hair shows at the bottom.

Thanks! :)

Oh yes. I'm in the exact same boat. I amde an appointment next week with a new stylist who "specializes" in curly hair. I'm so worried she's going to look at my beach waves and laugh. I'm mean, I'm sure she won't, but the thought is still in my head. I just need to trim everything up properly and maybe do some better layering. I'm not adverse to going a little shorter too.

If a stylist ever laughs at you, or makes you feel inferior in any way because of your natural hair - leave. Just get up and walk out. You dont deserve to feel like you dont belong. Your hair isnt straight and you have every right to go see a curl specialist.
I understand getting nervous before a cut, I think we all do!! But youre a client paying them your hard earned money to enhance your natural beauty, and if you ever feel uncomfortable, you have every right to leave.

Oh, I've never had that happen, but I just worry about it anyway. I'm being overly anxious I think. All my previous stylists just cut and style like it's straight. I went CG in January and really started trying to work my waves to see what would happen. I went to get a cut in Feb (I think it was Feb) and went to my normal stylist, told her that I was trying to wear it wavy now, and she washed/cut/blow dried it straight anyway. i didn't mind the wash and cut so much, but it did bug me that she blowed dried and flat ironed it straight. I guess that's why I'm trying to find a good "curly" stylist now. One that might be able to cut my hair to enhance what little wave I've got and give me extra pointers on styling it.

This is what you want. This is what you should tell her :)

She won't point you out to the salon and yell, "Curly Imposter! Curly Imposter! :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I don't fear dirty looks or snyde comments exactly, I think it's more about communicating what I want and being seen as a wavy now vs. someone who is almost straight. Appointment is next weekend so I'll keep everyone posted!

That's part of what I'm worried about when it comes to make an appointment with a curl specialist, especially if the stylist would want me to come in with naked hair (which ranges from 1c-2a, depending on what is "allowed" as far as naked hair). That either she would look at it and say I don't have curly hair or that she wouldn't know what to do with my hair since my curl pattern is on the weaker side.

I guess it all goes back to feeling like a wavy imposter.

I've had cuts with curly specialists and I think they still didn't know what to do with my hair. I have an appointment booked for the 15th with someone that has been recommended by more than one curly and wavy in town.

So glad I'm not alone! I've straightened my hair since I was 14 and I'm 28 now. Started CG about 3 months ago and I love it, but I'm still nervous about calling it curly. 'Curl imposter' fits it perfectly. Still no profile pic as I always use this on my phone but here's my 2 (or 3?) Hair. Someday maybe I'll get used to it.

Had my hair cut on Sunday and she was fabulous! I sat down and told her about my "weird" hair that seemed to be part wavy, part straight, and indecisive by the day. I also told her about my flat iron abuse. She promised to take my grown out angled bob into something that I could work with either straight or wavy. She also told me that with the volume of hair that I have and my texture that it was a "crime" that my last stylist never thinned out my hair or texturized me. She kept much of the length but layered it and then told me to come back in three months for a trim.

The result? MUCH curlier hair that actually holds for a 2nd day. I can also easily wear it "straightvy" meaning if I want I can just use my blow dryer on it and finger style so that it is straight with a little bit of wave and good volume.

I would call the shape a shorter version of the infamous Rachel cut when I wear it straighter. When it's wavy, it shrinks up to more of a bob.

Anyway, I highly recommend 2's of every curl strength give a "specialist" a shot. Explain your texture and your hair's habits. And, if you are in the Seattle area, I definitely recommend a trip to see Emily at Vain in Ballard!

Oh, and I will post pics as soon as I have them. :)

My cut turned out well too. She didn't laugh at me or point and yell "wavy imposter!" :thumbleft:

She cleaned up my layers and cut them in such a way that my wave has defintiely perked up. She gave me some more product and styling ideas. She was pretty impressed wth how much I had learned on my own and online. And best of al, she only charged $32!

    I'm so happy with it!
