What to do before/after coloring?

Looking for any advice from NC.com saavy stylists on what things I should do before/after coloring?

I know the best is to not chemically process my hair at all, but I also know that there are curlies out there that do very modest highlights or all over color.

I know the chemicals/etc can damage hair so is there anything I can do to combat/lessen the damage? Like a deep treatment or a protein treatment? Before? After? Both?

Any tips appreciated!

I'm not a stylist, but just going by what I've read on the forums, I know you should do a PT before you color, so your color comes out more even, and then after you color, give it at least a week before doing another one (or else the protein will kind of replace the color and you'll lose some of that color). Also, doing a DT afterwards is also supposed to help with damage.

Hopefully, others can chime in (either to correct me or give more advice). Hope this helps.
