Hair butters and low porosity hair

I notice one thing most LP gals seem to have in common whether fine or coarse haired, is shea butter being too heavy, and being that the molecular make up of shea butter is quite large, it makes sense...


So i'm wondering about the other butters like mango , avocado , cupuacu, and their effect on LP hair as well...

I definitely see alot of raves about mango and would like to know how it compares to shea on LP...


and butter lovers care to share their experience and compare?

My hair doesn't care for straight butter or oil. I find that I can use just about any butter or oil (except castor oil) in products without a problem. It may take a while for it to absorb. In that case, my hair gets better as the day goes on.

Some are mixed with water so they are moisturizers and sealant in one. I think most are just for sealing.

Then again I'm not a butter expert as I've never used them. Somebody?

Shea butter is ok for me if it is in another product (like a rinse-out or leave-in conditioner). But I really liked twisting on dry hair with straight avocado butter and also Pura Body Naturals cupuacu butter. My hair did well with both when I kept my twists in for 2-3 weeks. I try to apply any kind of butter a little at a time so as not to overdo it but I do prefer lightweight/whipped ones.

Butters are oils/emollients so they are not water soluble, but most of it will come away when you rinse out your conditioner. Products that are more water-oil emulsions will be easier to rinse. You might want to shampoo every once in a while so as to cover any potential build-up issues, but ymmv (obviously the thicker the product or the more you apply, the sooner you will need to shampoo).

My LP hair definitely does not like shea butter. Anytime I tried it my hair laughed and would just sit there, strands crossed, chanting I shall not be moved. :director::sad3:

Totally had me thinking she didn't like butter but I recently used a sample of Marie Dean's Mango Cupuacu Hair and Body Pudding for a TO and she was soooo happy! You def might be onto something. Curious to hear what other curlies think of these alternative butters as well....

My hair loves shea butter as well as oils when it's mixed into products but it didn't like them in raw form. When I do add an oil, I usually do it on the weekend because it takes forever to absorb it all. I'm starting to experiment with more butter/oil products. My hair really seems to look better with them.

My hair LOVES shea butter and I use liberal amounts. Only thing that really seals in moisture for me.

Im lp and a shea butter oil mix works well on my ends. But if I put it on the length of my hair it is greasy. Im going to experiment with the ratio of shea and aloe mix and see how that works.

I've never tried aloe. I thought it would be drying. Maybe I should give it a whirl.

So I finally got my hands on mango butter and so far i'm liking it in my flaxseed custard. It is not as greasy as shea butter...


I want to try a mango/aloe mix next...

I have A LOT of the Marie Dean products--over 20 at last count. When I first found them a little over 2 years ago, I'd use at least one 5 or 6 times a week for about 18 months. (I wet, use a rinse out and style every day.) I can only use one as a styling product. I think they "seal" the moisture in my hair. I'm not sure it's the alternate butters, or just that the products are really well formulated.

I find that the pudding, styling cream, leave in and yogurt smoothie all work really well for this purpose. Some of the other styling products work as well. Only issue is that some of the products "come and go." They'll be available, then they aren't, then they are, etc.

Any pure butter on my LP hair just weighs it down and creates an oil slick. I always either whip or mix my butters. I call my favorite mix of Shea,mango, and aloe butter as well as various oils creamy crack. It leaves my hair soft and bouncy and still gives the hold my fine hair needs.

I learned that you have to know how and when to use different products. For me, butters act like a thickening agent so if I need to wear a fro or want to have thick full looking hairstyles then I will use the butters. Otherwise I usually wear slick back and down styles so I need products that are not as thick unless I want a thick hanging ponytail.
