Mercury in Tuna

Do you eat chunk light or albacore tuna? I eat the chunk light because of concerns about mercury but I don't like the taste as much as albacore. Which do you eat and do you think the mercury claims about albacore are overdramatized?

    I eat yellowfin canned tuna:

(That is one of my favorite brands, but I mean specifically this type)

And when I get my hands on a few cans, I can eat that stuff every single day. It's just pure bliss. Otherwise I don't eat canned tuna (or much fresh tuna for that matter; belly canned tuna/tuna confit is my preference).

I eat fish that are both on the low end and the high end of the mercury list, so I basically don't worry about mercury at all. I don't eat them on a regular basis anyway.

I eat both (cutting down at least 1/2 on the mercury).
I'm not sure if albacore tastes better to me because I drown all my canned tuna in mayo, vinegar, raw onion, dill and pepper. I could probably put shoe laces in that concoction and they would taste great.

I think the concern over mercury is primarily for children or childbearing women but I'm not sure about that.

I used to eat Bumblebee canned salmon which has no mercury but it has disappeared.

A friend of hubby's was trying to lose weight, working out, eating albacore tuna daily for months and months. Got really sick, couldn't figure out what it was. Was mercury poisoning. Granted, he ate *a lot* of tuna but the danger is there.

That's scary! Good to know. I don't eat that much tuna - maybe several times a week, but the mercury must accumulate. Thanks for posting.

If you lived off of tuna or other fish higher up on the food chain, then you could risk mercury poisoning. But most people don't so you dont really have to worry.

I love tuna, just not canned, it is just too over cooked for me. Me and my kitty loves us some raw tuna!

I don't like the taste of chunk light (tastes like metal to me) so I usually eat the albacore. I have heard that you shouldn't eat canned tuna more than once a week because of the mercury so that's what I do.

Sounds like a better recipe than mine. I'm going to try it. Gherkins - love them. :laughing6:
