Hair Is Thicker AT The Roots But Gets Thinner Down To The Ends

Me and my best friend were talking one day and we both stumbled on the subject that both of us had the same problem: Our hair was thick at the roots but got thinner as it got to the ends. My friend has straight, relaxed hair past her shoulders and my naturally curly hair is just a few inches below my ear.

Why is it that both our hair is thinner at the ends. I have natural layers in my hair and I thought that might be the reason but it's also happening to my straight-haired counterpart who has no layers. Not even a bang. Her hair is all the same length.

I read somewhere that tapered hair (The definition I received for tapered was hair thicker at the roots and thinner at the bottom) meant that your hair couldn't grow anymore. I hope that this isn't true because I am trying to grow my curly hair out to past my shoulders and I would be heartbroken if I was stuck with short hair for the rest of my life. (No offense to short-haired girls but I personally don't like short hair, nor can I do many styles with my short hair that I like)

Can someone please help? Thanks you guys.

My hair is like that and it is still growing! I think that it has something to do with new hair growing in that hasn't grown as long as the rest of the hair yet. If you think about it, you shed 100-200 hairs a day and then the new hair has to grow in.

It could also be that some of the hair is broken off at the ends?

One reason is because there's distance at your roots two inches apart, but if you take hair on your head from a two inch apart section in your hands, it's not two inches apart at the ends, so that could be a reason. Sorry if that didn't make sense. '_'# I'll try to figure out a better explanation if wanted lol.

Wait is it growing thicker or is it just thinning at the ends?
If it's growing thicker, shouldn't that be good?
If it's thinning at the ends, maybe you're not treating it right.. Or split ends.. Idk

I heard that the ends can naturally be thinner from wear and tear.

Same problem here :( :( My hair hasn't been able to grow. It has been APL my whole life. That's why i went natural. Let's see if i will make it and have BSL hair.

    Sounds like breakage to me.

if you get a trim, and your hair feels thicker.. then as time goes on it thins out again thats breakage & you need to take better care of the ends.
Protein is important to stop breakage but you must also make sure the ends are moisturized because them being dry and brittle will also lead to breakage.
My hair used to be like that, now I do regular protein treatments and I always add extra sealant or moisturizer to my ends

i had the same problem! mine was like that because of heat damage so i cut about 4 inches off but my hair was sooo thin compared to when i was younger! ok what i did to get it back in good condition was use a henna treatment once a week follwed by deep conditioning. i did this for 8 weeks ans my hair was thicker and stronger...now i only need to henna once a month. also i used caster oil on my scalp and on my hair mixed with sesame oil. hope this helps in some way xx
