CG: Glycerin

I've been CG for about a year. However, I just learned that glycerin isn't good either. So, I took glycerin out of my hair products (meaning I had to get new products). And I feel like I'm going through another hair transition. Do you think this is normal or are my products not working for me? I do know that my products are cg safe.

Thanks for the help!!

Do you mean that glycerin isn't CG? Or do you mean that glycerin doesn't work for your hair/environment?

glycerin is cg. glycerin absorbs moisture.

the problem with glycerin is in low dew points. in low dew points the air is dry, so glycerin will take the moisture out of your hair, leaving it dry.

in mid to high dew points it takes it from the air, thereby adding moisture to your hair. my hair loves glycerin in mid to high dew points.

i think it can also depend on the formulation of the product as i have used some products with glycerin in low dews and they worked well in my hair, but for the most part i avoid it in the winter.

    3a, some 2c & 3b, medium texture, porosity normal, low elasticity :-(

i love glycerin in mid to high dew points.

in fact, i think it can also depend on the formulation of the product as i have used some products with glycerin in low dews and they worked well in my hair, but for the most part i avoid it in the winter.

+1 to everything rbb says. I find that if glycerin is listed 2nd or 3rd in a product, it's pretty much a disaster for my hair - I end up with dry frizzy hair. But if it's farther down on the ingredient list it's ok usually. I don't live in an area with high dew points, but I bet my hair would like some of these products if I did. So, you don't have to stop using glycerin-containing products if they're working for you! But if they aren't working for you, it will probably just take some time to find others that you like.

My hair loves glycerin year-round. Many curlies say that glycerin has been very drying for them. I've not had that problem. In low dews, I just need to use slightly richer products to ward off dryness. Glycerin has been the key for me in taming frizz.

+1 to what Hen says. My hair likes glycerin. It doesn't dry me out at all. I add it to my FSG, not alot but some. I get almost no frizz when I use FSG, or okra gel (I make that too).
I don't live in an area that has many low dew days, so I don't have that problem , luckily.

So glycerin is definitely "CG safe" - it just depends on if your hair likes it.
That's me with FSG as my styler!!

3b. fine & thick, coarse, dry, medium porosity. Sucks up product and loves ACVs! FSG is my HG!

    Currently using:
Low Poo: TJ's Refresh No Poo: CoWash w/VO-5; Sonoma Soap Company sulfate-free poo
RO: Yes to Cuc; SSC Lavender Condish; Sally GVP LI: Donna Marie Miracle D&C
Style: FSG w/Aussie Instant Freeze & CIAB

ditto that. Depending on the amounts, it can make my hair dry or greasy or stringy.
Like many ingredients, it's a balancing act. You just have to experiment and find what works. And then when you figure it all out, something will change and you'll have to try some more. That just seems to be how it works. : )
