North Carolina passes Amendment 1

To say that I'm mildly disgusted is an understatement. To say I'm surprised would be a lie. Sorry for the Huffington Post article, they aren't always the most reliable and certainly not my favorite news source, but they were the first ones that popped up with this news on my twitter this morning.

Thanks RCC. It's not on the first page for me, and I generally don't look beyond that. I figured this would generate some sort of discussion so I'm kind of surprised the other thread isn't on the front page.

People are stupid. Beyond that I would have to use curse words.
I live in a conservative county (tho my town still leans to the left a bit) and it gets tiring.

I want to know when we are going to outlaw divorce. Seems like if Americans want the Christian god involved in all marriages, then how come divorce is allowed? I know god hates divorce just as much as he hates ****s.

    Really sad.

Gay marriage has been allowed in Massachusetts for more than 5 years now. I can tell you that our society here has not fallen apart. God hasn't sent down lighting bolts to punish us. We're doing just fine, thank you very much.

+1. Gay marriage was passed in NY nearly a year ago and the world hasn't ended yet.

I have a friend who's currently in NC. She can't wait to leave.

Well because the Christian bible never specifically states that no one should get divorced. It does allow for divorce in certain instances...however it's pretty clear that homosexuality is a no go. But eh.. people have ways of getting around everything..so I'm not suggesting the view is neccessarily valid.

Well, it's only allowed to be initiated by men in cases of adultery. Much more limited than what we have now. If these fools want religious restrictions on marriage, they should get them all.

Read your Bible. If Adultery is involved you can divorce. God does not hate. He Loves all of his children. There's just rules that we should follow if we are true children of God.

Depends on how you look at the text and apply it.. the verse could also refer to fornication...and many Biblical scholars have argued that point.

I don't neccessarily believe that point needs to be used to say if one thing isn't good enough then another thing shouldn't be. For me, the context is important. And this is why I don't have a problem with Christians that examine their Bible closely and apply it in context for their own lives and expect other Christians to do likewise..to me that only makes common sense.

Given, I don't like the idea of a government that is supposed to be non-religious using religious views of any religion to make laws. I don't see any good coming of that..at all.

If I could bold on the app, I'd bold your last paragraph.

I live in NC and the tension regarding the election results yesterday is still pretty high. In my county, those voting for the amendment barely beat those against it (a mere 68 votes). On my way to work this afternoon I passed the courthouse and there were protesters, police, news crews, etc.

I hate that they "advertised" Amendment 1 as the anti gay marriage referendum because (1) gay marriage is already prohibited here and (2) it effects all kinds of families--gay and straight. I know a lot of uninformed dummies essentially shot themselves in the foot because they were too busy being hateful.

Read YOUR Bible. If we're going to make laws that are based on the Bible, then we shouldn't spare any. You wear fiber blends? A nice polycotton maybe? Well, according to the Bible, you shouldn't be. Ever had a haircut? Do you prefer your boyfriend/husband/SO to be clean shaven? Well, you should stop cutting your hair, and he should stop shaving. Because according to the Bible, you shouldn't be trimming up any hair. Do you consider yourself "unpure" when you have your period? Do you avoid all human contact so that you can avoid making other people unclean due to your menstruation? Because according to the Bible, you are, and should avoid people because you're going to make them unclean with your lady blood. If some guy is harassing your man on the street, and you should intervene, according to the Bible, you should get your hand cut off!
If you aren't a virgin when you get married, you are to be stoned to death. Shouldn't you also be following these rules in order to be a true child of God? It's in the Bible, and the Bible is law!

So, if you're going to implement one law based on some outdated writings from YOUR religion, we should not spare any. So please, let me know when all these people who are petitioning making gay marriage illegal because it's against what is "in the Bible", that they are petitioning to make cotton blends illegal, haircuts illegal, making sure women are isolated during their periods so they can't make the menz unclean, cutting of the hands of women who try to break up fights between men, and stoning non-virgins if they try to get married. Go ahead and try to pass those laws, and maybe, just maybe, you'll realize how ridiculous it is, and why it's ridiculous to pass laws against gay marriage for the same reasons.

I can't elaborate much further or I will freak out. I spent the last few weeks being told I would have to stand before God and account for my sin of, "assisting the gays". I was ushering in Sodom and Gomorrah, on and on. No one would listen to reason about the damage to many this amendment was sneaking in. Just fear and hate. I have been livid. I'll leave it at that.
