Adult Acne Issues! Help!

kurliegrl922kurliegrl922 Posts: 99Registered Users
Hi everyone,
I'm 28 years old and continue to have adult acne. At this point it is more blackheads/whiteheads and redness from past acne, but I also always have atleast 3-4 pimples on my face at all times.

I currently use Clinique Mild Liquid Facial Soap, The #2 Conditioning Toner, and the Oil Free Spf 25 moisturizer.

I'm open to really anything at this point to avoid breakouts and to help the redness from past breakouts.

Suggestions welcome :love5:

I dont have much help except empathy. My skin is a mess!

I had relatively okay skin in high school, and great skin most of my adult life. Post having babies my skin would go through a bad period, and I used Proactive. Now I'm in my almost mid 30's and it's suddenly a disaster! It must be hormones.

I've tried different cleansers, toners, treatments, etc, nothing works. It seems to be balanced if I use a gentle cleanser and Yes to.Cucumbers lotion to calm skin. And I do clay masks Or LUSH's fresh masks.

But it'll be clear for a couple days and then bam, a mess again.

I feel your pain, just started getting acnes now (late 30s). I am trying washing with black soap and moosturizing with vitamin E oil. I apply benzoyl peroxide 10% at night. My face hurts all day. I have not had acne till now.

So far, weirdly enough, using Baby Magic baby wash and yes to Cucumbers, or aloe on my skin has cleared it up a lot. But if it was a hormone thing, theres no rhyme or reason for it.

I wanted to try black soap, but I wanted to get the Shea Moisture one bc Im afraid the actual black soap will be too drying.

Just started using Dr woods facial cleanser mixed with Alaffia african black soap, I Must it Really Works. I noticed my acne and blemishes Are Clearing Rapidly, it doesn't dry out my face. Followed by Acv mixed with water (80% acv/20% water) for toner, then trader's joe nourish oil free moisturizer.

I recently tried something new. Bentonite clay. It does double duty as both a hair mask and face mask. It was amazing! A little dryness for a day or two but my face is clear and smooth. Forget Proactiv, Clean & Clear, not even Aveda(my very favorite) did this well this quickly!

Get to Whole Foods or your local health food store and get some bentonite clay.......

That totally sounded like an infomercial LoL.... But that's the truth. I'm so serious. I implore you to try it!

I've had acne my entire adult life, but no one believes me because I control it so well.

I take fish oil for the hormonal cystic acne I get once a month or if my skin gets dehydrated, cures it 100% unless I stop taking it.

I also use the Dr. Kirby's skin clarity kit for regular black/whiteheads. It's similar to proactive, but works 10 times better. Friends and family I've referred to this product have said the same. I personally got no results from proactive.

Both work wonders and I've gotten tons of other people hooked on these two cures after seeing what it's done for my skin. If your acne is really out of control I also recommend adding differin to this regime it's strong, but doesn't have all of the side effects of retin-a.

I also eat tons of raw fruits and vegetables and drink green juices and smoothies which gives my skin a glow and improves the texture, but the above regime cleared it up before I changed my diet.

I've tried every prescription and over the counter acne med over the years and this regime is the only one that completely cleared it up. For some reason my acne was resistant to just about everything out there. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to share I know how frustrating acne can be, it gave me pure hell for over a decade.

Backing up the bentonite and black soap claims.
They both work for my acne.

And make sure you get plenty of h2O in you too.....

Oh! B4 bentonite clay came into my life, I took a couple cloves of garlic, crushed them and swallowed them with h2O every morning. It stimulates the liver function, causing impurities to be flushed out of your body. Those impurities, if not cleaned out of the body, tend to come out in the form of acne.

I think if you've been suffering with acne for over a decade, and tried every OTC product, it might be time to see a doctor and try some Rx products.

You could try garlic to stimulate your liver...won't hurt you...but it's total nonsense.

It works! Everything we overlook in the produce section can really resolve some of the issues we have with our bodies. I, too, called it nonsense once.....until I broke down and tried it.

I support the diet thing too. The Perricone diet for acne works well for long-term change. I also support the use of black soap & lactic acid masks.

The Perricone diet consists mostly of wild salmon and berries. Most other foods are forbidden. Quackwatch.com keeps an eye on Perricone, because most of the claims in his books are unsubstantiated by science. He may have been a doctor at one time, but, these days, he's an entrepeneur who just sells over-priced vitamins.

I'm pretty much over the obsession with strict diets to 'fix' something.

As long as you are not living off a high fat, processed, fast food diet, youre eating well. Your body is meant to eat all sorts of things, including meat, and yes, fat.

Your body will process food, cleanse, and eliminate toxins on its own. Thats what it does.

I'm not against taking herbs or supplements to boost certain functions, but there most likely isnt going to be a life altering change. And most supements have some sort of side effect.

The Perricone diet is all about upping your water intake, eating enough lean proteins, cutting out excessive sugar, caffeine & processed foods. Sounds like the same thing most doctors & nutritionists preach. As someone who has READ the book & incorporated his way of eating, I can vouch that it worked for me.

But I agree with that. I think we should all cut out processed, high fat, high sugar foods, we just don't.

Ive seen people with the crappiest diets have gorgeous skin, and those who eat clean with severe acne. Back in the dark ages when i first got acne (early 70s), doctors still subscribed to the diet-causes-acne philosophy...probably because they had little else to offer. I was put on elimination diets until i was practically eating nothing, and none of it helped. I spent (wasted) months doing it.

Acne has always been with humans. Early literature mentions it, in every culture, in every era. It's caused by a defect in cell structure, over-productive oil glands, and bacteria. You need all 3 of those things. All the liver-stimulating garlic or Tibetan virgin clay in the world won't help you if you have the perfect storm of acne causers.

I have suffered with acne for 40 years now...i have tried it ALL...and i contue the struggle, even at age 50. For someone to come in here and say clay or diet cures it is ridiculous. Acne is complicated and horridly difficult to treat. There are no easy answers, but if someone tells me they've been struggling for years, i tell them to see a doctor, because they've probably already tried all the obvious suggestions for mild acne and it's time for serious medicine.

I started experiencing adult hormonal acne in November 2011. I tried everything but nothing worked till now. Finally went to the dermatologist 6 Weeks ago June 2012, and was given Tretinoin cream 0.025%. This is a retin A cream.
I am impressed with the result and hope that this can help someone going through this.

Here are my day 1 and week 6 results

very nice results in 6 weeks. did you make any other changes?

re: diet and acne connection we're just in 2 camps on this board. i do believe diet effects my skin. the other stuff (i.e. topicals) not doubt help a lot but i have seen time and time again that dairy makes me break out. dairy also makes my stomach crampy, makes me gasey and also makes me produce more mucus. it's shown that dairy has a lot of hormones and antibiotics in it and i personally (luvmylocs) am more susceptible. i think it's like anything else, some peoples body's are more sensitive to certain things. for example, some people smoke for years and never get lung or other cancers and some never smoke and get lung cancer. that doesn't mean that smoking doesn't cause many people to have a higher risk of having lung cancer. same way with food, some people can eat "anything" and never gain weight and some can just look at a twinkie and gain 5 lbs. i believe anyone suffering from acne should at least consider their diet as part of a holistic approach to getting rid of acne and keeping their skin clear.

Right now I'm using Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne Wash Redness Soothing Cream Cleanser. It is totally working on me. I have redness around my nose and it has reduced it. I also have acne that always appears on the sides of my lips, above my lips. and chin. It has helped with that too but what really started making them disappear is Neutrogena's Alcohol Free Toner. I have combination skin. I also use Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne Wash Redness Soothing Gentle Scrub once a week. Hope that helps. I tried different products and these are the ones that are working for me.

Unfortunately, diet is the only thing that has helped me. You really have to know what's in everything you eat, though, in order to pinpoint and avoid triggers.

Now I also have rosacea with acne prone skin, and finding stuff to cover red and not clog is hard. Meow just isn't working for me anymore. My skin is ruddier and dryer. Not even sure if my rosacea topical works anymore.

I currently only suffer from "that time of the month" acne. i'm in my 20's and used to suffer with terrible skin. :(

I've found that salicylic acid and my skin are not friends. its in almost all face washes and black head removers. :( I'm also allergic to something in Bare Minerals Original formula.

I drink a lot of water now to help my liver flush out toxins. (I have a hereditary liver disease that over produces bilirubin) Water really seems to help. Tea is also a good substitute for coffee and other things (Red tea :) )

Cetaphil has been my savior. I can only use this or Ivory soap on my skin. I also used cetaphil's regular lotion on my face. anything else and i break out. :( also get a washcloth that has a scrub pad on one side for daily exfoliation. :)

black heads are still an issue on my nose and such. :( I use biore black head strips from time to time. they itch when you take them off, but i like the results.

I've done the gambit of Rx and OTC products for the past 10 years! My oily skin is still giving me acne even now as my skin has settled into it's 'adult' years (i'm 23).

My skin is loving the Clinque Acne solutions 3 step.
The foaming cleanser is much gentler on my skin than normal tradtion acne facial cleaners.

The toner helps on the exfoliating front, leaving my skin smooth smooth afterwards.

My real love of the system is the acne solutions moisturizer! I was using other moisturizers with the other two steps of the system and my face would get red as soon as I put on some moisturizer (red as in it looked like I took a washcloth and roughly scrubbed my face, or like I had windburn =\)

My skin reached a lovely balanced place after about 3-4weeks. My skin will always be a little oily, or "dewy" looking, but i've seen a huge reduction in the number of pimples I get. One pops up every now and then, but it's super infrequent now.

NOTE: I do the three steps in the morning only and then just basic cetaphil oily skin cleaner in the evening after i remove my make up. During the winter when my skin gets super dry I use an anti-wrinkle night cream to help keep my skin hydrated and happy (since overly dry skin results in even more oil production- kinda like curly hair ;) )

That's what works for me, I know some other people have gone off on a slightly different discussion on this thread, but I thought I'd chime back in on your original question.

I'm a total product junkie and LOVE trying new products every time!

I'd actually have to agree. My sister is practically vegetarian watching everything she consumes and I have a cr@p diet eat anything & everything. We've always been like that since we were kids. Yet she's always had problems with acne & I've never had an issue. I seen her try so many products and diets and finally now she's seeing a dermatologist now. It's been an awful experience and I can understand when people want to try different things. it's natural.

But what I would say is everyone is different & the causes of acne can be different, so don't rule out any sane advice that cant harm until you've tried it yrself.
