MSM

I was wondering if instead of biotin, MSM is good for hair growth? I'm really afraid my skin will break out with biotin...took it a long time ago and my skin broke out a bit and I hated it.
I'm thinking of buying Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM Vit C because it also has vitamin C which I don't get enough of and it helps with the pains I sometimes have in my knees..I'm still afraid of taking it so if anyone has taken it before, please let me know how you like it!

I don't know about hair growth but it seems to help my ulcerative colitis related joint pain. The pain in my ankles is nearly gone!

I started taking msm initially for my shoulder and it ha helped. I'm going to be adding vit c into my vitamine regimen soon because I read that vit c helps your body soak in all the rest of your supplements. I take both biotin and msm and they are giving my positive results. I wonder if taking a lower dose of biotin will be good for your hair and not cause you to breakout. I heard prenatals work but I have no first hand experience with it. Also iron supplements and b complex is good.

Hmm does msm help with really bad chronic pain?? (I'm wondering if I should recommend it to my friend who is recovering from knee trauma :/)
But for growth.. I've *heard* (never tried it, but I think I may) that it lengthens your anagen cycle, so basically your hair has more time to keep growing, as opposed to biotin which gives you a major component to aid in hair growth.
But I'm gonna order some and see what it does for my hair, if I see a noticeable change and chime in again.

I have chronic fibromyalgia-type joint and muscle pain due to ulcerative colitis. Since starting the msm a month or so ago the pain is gone. I take much less than the recommended dosage and it's worked. Now, I'm not a doc, didn't run it by a doc or do extensive research so you HAVE to take what I say with a LOT of caution. I ASSUME it was the msm that sorted out my issues because it's the only thing I've changed with my food and supplement intake.

What does MSM stand for? I have not heard of it but I might try it!

@misselisabeth91 it stands for methylsulfonyl-methane. Msm is not only great for pains and hair growth, it also makes cell walls thinner so that toxins and wastes can be released easier and nutrients can be absorbed faster. It has a detoxifying effect on the body. If you take enough it can also lighten skin tone, your skin will look a little red before this happens because of the detox effect it has on the body. It is also good for asthma, allergies, gaining a better tolerance with foods that you might be allergic to, and also rejuvenating the skin. You can't actually overdose on MSM. Although The maximum amount you can take is 6000 mg. If you take too much too fast a side effect you can have, the only side effect ive heard of, are headaches. Thats about it.

I took Emergen C Lite with MSM years ago, no biotin and no other supplement for growth, except for fish oil (Trader Joe's brand) which as I read later on helps with growth too, and back then I wasn't trying to grow my hair, I was taking Emergen C for my immune system, and also using it as a skin scrub/mask (works really well btw, evened out my skin tone and had a lightening effect). I noticed my hair grew really fast while I was taking it, which I didn't really like, because back then I had very expensive color and highlights and couldn't afford to go for root touch ups as often as my super fast growing hair required, and a cut I had also needed to be fixed up as soon as hair got longer, it got too bushy and bulky otherwise, so having to go often wasn't good for the wallet either.

But now I've been taking MSM 1500 (Doctor's Best brand) once daily for the past 10 months, with a lot of Vitamin C ( I eat a lot of oranges in addition to C supplement), and 5000 mcg of Biotin, Silica and Gelatin, and even though my hair grew, it's still not as drastic as speed of growth was with Emergen C. Don't know what kind of MSM is used there. Going to have to try it again. Maybe growing slows down with age too...

Ashleyj, sorry didn't reply sooner, I rarely come to this site anymore. To answer your question, this was like 10-12 years ago, so I don't really remember, I think it was once a month or maybe every 6 weeks... Not too sure... But roots did appear super fast. I don't color it anymore so can't determine growth speed by the roots and kind of miss the gratification...

Where do you guys find MSM? I swear I don't see it in any drugstore/grocery store ever and my budget is not there for me to buy it offline right now. :(

Do you have a Whole Foods in your area? That's where I get mine from. Walmart also sells it, but I think it's lower quality.

We do have a whole foods about 20 minutes from my house so that's a good idea. Thank you! I feel the same way about Walmart vitamins too tbh except for the Nature Made ones (most of them are USP verified).

I've started taking glucosamine and chondroitin for just under a week and most of my back and hip pain nearly gone. I have to take much less pain medication. I hope it lasts. :)

I didn't even know these types of supplements did anything for hair growth. What a great little bonus. :D

For those looking for these types of supplements and can't find them, they are usually in the vitamin section of stores. If the store has an "arthritis" section they may be there. Sam's sells these also. That's where I got mine. I wanted one with everything, but they only sold a double pack and I wasn't sure it would work so I didn't want 400 pills that do nothing!! LoL! Happily just the glucosamine chondroitin combo seems to work fine alone. :)
