Shea Moisture Giving the Itchies...

SegBSegB Posts: 692Registered Users
I finally tried the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus shampoo...On the positive side, I LOVE what it did for my hair, on the negative side, my scalp has been itching all day :-( This was the only different product I used this morning...Is there a known irritant in the ingredients or is my scalp just choosing to be difficult?

I will probably try it one more time to rule out just regular allergies, but my scalp is not a fun time today...I don't know if I want to put up with an itchy scalp again :-/

Perhaps it is the coconut? It also has protein in it.

My scalp itches like crazy only when I use the curl enhancing smoothie. So it probably is the product that's irritating the scalp.

Thanks so much...Maybe it is the protein, my hair has been super sensitive to protein lately, although I have successfully used products that rinse out with silk protein in the past. Usually though, protein makes my hair dry, has not made my scalp itch, at least until this point. I guess things can change...I really had high hopes for this shampoo, and it made my hair so soft!

Hmmm...I did try the smoothie and with the exception of it being a bit too heavy, I did not have a reaction. Although it wasn't on my scalp...Just from my ears down...

Just re-reading this...There is a lot of coconut in there...I tried straight coconut oil once and it made my hair feel dry.

I gave away that shampoo. I didnt find its cleansing power to be strong enough. I have to have my hair and scalp very clean at least once a week or I get the itchies.
Yes, it's real. No, you can't touch it. :wav:

I believe it's the last ingredient, the japonica or Japanese honeysuckle extract. I was using the conditioner and it made my scalp itch. Apparently that extract, although it's natural, acts like a paraben and parabens generally make me itch. you can google japonica extract for more info :)

I could never use the original Shea Moisture - Shea Butter Leave In Conditioner, it made my scalp itch (the more I used it the itch became a burn.) Never determined what it was that caused the allergy. So, I never tried the products that became available on the ground. When you're allergic, it doesn't get better, it only gets worse.

Thanks Ladies...Looks like a few of us have had a reaction to the products...Good to know, thought I was the only one! All I read are the good results from this line, never read about anyone having an issue...I may try it once more just to rule out my seasonal allergies, but most likely a day I am home so I can wash again if the itchies come back...Again, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

Two days a go I bought Shea Moisture conditioner, Shea Moisture Smoothie curl enhance, and Eden Body Work Leave-in conditioner (Coconut Shea). I used all of the three products for wash and go. The following day meaning yesterday evening, my scalp start to itch. As the time goes on it kept getting worst. Today, I came to school and still itching me like crazy. I don't even know which product is causing the problem but I am going nuts....I can't wait to go home and wash it all out.....I am guessing that I am having an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients found in one of the product. Once I figured it out, I will update you guys.

Mine gets itchy right out of the shower with the towel on my head, and then its fine. For the irritated - you may want to try the Baby products, I haven't had any issues with those.

Sorry to hear that you have breakouts and itchies...

I get breakouts from a number of things - botanical extracts and oils are two of them. Learning to be an ingredient detective will be invaluable to you. This list is a good one to get started with in looking at new products to see if they might cause you trouble.

Bioterra curl cream broke me out too, it has a ester (isopropyl palmitate) that doesn't agree with my skin. My hair liked it though - too bad!

    Good luck :)
