Fenugreek! (1 ingredient conditionner)

LilycurlyLilycurly Posts: 55Registered Users
I've been experimenting with Fenugreek as a conditionner for the last weeks. I've read many articles on the amazing properties of the tiny seeds and wanted to see what it was all about. And I think I've discovered an amazing natural product for my hair!

First of all, I have to say that I'm a mix of waves and curls. Thin with a few 3A curls near the fringe. Results may be different for other types.

So, what I do is ground coarsly about 5 tablespoons of Fenugreek seeds. (Beware, it smells like maple sirup and curry).
Put it in a jar and fill the rest with just boiled water. This needs to sit a while so I prepare it the morning when I know I will wash my hair before bed. When it's time, give it a good shake and pour it through a strainer the get rid of the little pieces that will have turned kind of gelatinous and grainy.
Keep only the liquid in a bottle. It has a watery-gel feel that is so great on hair.
Now all you need to do is wash your hair as you normally do. (I use soapnuts or a bit of castille soap.) Then pour the fenugreek condish on your scalp and scrub gently, then soak your lengths in it. Leave on you head as you continue your shower routine and rinse out carefully after a little pause time.

I'm telling you, I put no other products in it...no gel, cream, nothing and my hair dried fast with beautiful curls and volume like I never had before! Fenugreek is supposedly a miracle too for people who tend to loose hair and against getting whites or greys. (But I'm guessing these are long term effects.)

If someone tries, please tell me if it works as great for you!

woow was it really that good? i love using natural things like that that really help, i might look into it. can you use it as a final rinse? and not rinse it out just leave it in?

my hair: 3b, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
Oils and my own procuts are my hairs best friend

For my hair, it's absolutely amazing! The first time I used it I wasn't sure...when the hair was still wet, it felt different, like it was somehow coated even if I had no product in it, but it dried very full and shiny.

I never used it as a leave-in yet...I'm not sure I would try because it would weight down my thin hair with the gel-like constistancy. It's not like a regular herbal rinse.

But someone with very thick and curly hair might try. Maybe a small quantity diluted in a normal leave-in. It can't be bad I guess.

Also it's so cheap! Another thing to love about it.

I lost a lot of hair after the birth of my little son, and I don't know if it's the Fenugreek or the hormones finally getting back to normal, but I've got baby hair growing back all over my head now!

woow it does sound amazing!! i have really thick hair, and alot of it, so i might try it as a leave in. i do other herbal rinses, with nettle n rosemary n that, so i might look into it. does it have good slip to it as well? im looking for another herb that has good slip in it.

It has very good slip when you pour it on the hair, but not so much after you rinse it out, that's why I didn't try the leave-in thing. I suggest you try to wash it out the first time you use it and see how it reacts with your hair.:)

I kinda like fenugreek. I've only used it for hair masks with other Ayurvedic powders. It does make my hair soft and curly (maybe shiny too, can't remember, been a while). BUT it smells strongly of onions and by Christ! if it dries in your hair (I have the powder) you will spend a week washing it out.

The powder is too fine to be sieved but I have some filter paper that I might be able to make a fenugreek conditioning rinse with. I'll try it when my mini twists are out!
My hair is in the 4s, low in porosity, high in density and coarse. :happy6:

Hm.. I wonder if you can use it like flax seed gel..

I wish I hadn't given my bottle away - I never would've thought to use it in my hair (I used it to increase milk supply when I was breastfeeding - and yes, it smells like maple syrup, and so does your body odor when you take it orally, lol).

I like fenugreek, I have used it on its own soaked in water overnight and then apply to my scalp and hair. Left on for a few hours then rinse. It makes my hair soft, silky and leaves a nice sheen behind.

I have used it to stretch my ayurvedic powders, once you left it to soak and the mucilage is released it helps with using less of the regular ayurvedic herbs/powders.

I bought a kilo of this powder as my hair enjoys it so much.

The only down side to it is the fine grains need co-washing out and my very thick/dense strands hold unto the grains. However, it is nothing a cone free conditioner such as Tresemme Naturals can not handle.

My hair loves it and it is also pretty economically priced too.

No, I don't think so, slightly different compositions in the mucilage that is released and also unless you like smelling like onions/garlic/maple syrup. I personally would not even attempt using it as a gel >.<

Does anyone know if there is an already-prepared fenugreek conditioner? I am not good with DIY, even if it's supposedly easy, I buy ingredients and never follow through to make the intended product.

    I can't find any fenugreek conditioner ... :-|

However, there is the fenugreek extract that people take diluted in water. I read a review where someone said that put the extract in to your body lotion.

If you go to the product reviews page you can search by ingredient. It came up with three pages of results when I entered fenugreek. I didn't look at them all but some looked good.

Ive used this on my hair before. I don't remember the results to comment but I DO remember the smell being HORRIFIC. Needless to say...I gave the product away. Now I wish I had some to experiment with again. I may revisit this ingredinet

I added this to some FSG, it worked but it was my first attempt at FSG so I can't say if it was better or not. I put 1 tbsp fenugreek seeds and 1/4 cup flax seeds in 2 cups water and followed the no-fail FSG method for cooking. The fenugreek seeds stink but the resulting gel only had the oatmealesque smell I've seen described.
