How many long haired curlies do we have?

redcelticcurlsredcelticcurls Posts: 17,502Registered Users
I wouldn't mind growing it out just to see how long it can get while still looking halfway decent. I have seen photos of mitabird's hair, and it is lovely long.

My hair seems to grow well enough since I get my roots done every 5 weeks. I just get tired of it at around BSL and then I cut it.

If I did ever get to waist length though, I think I'd stop there. I'm just not a fan of knee length hair. I mean, if it can still look good sure, but some of it to me is more scraggly than I would wear, though the owners of the hair love it, so who am I to say.

I have done some browsing around on LHC. I can't sign up though since I use Yahoo!

Also, not being a huge fan of extreme lengths, I don't know how much I could really post there anyway. I'm also not against hair donation or people cutting if they want to, which sometimes seems opposite of the group.

I have some decent length if straight, but, of course, there is shrinkage.

Does one really need to wear protective styles most of the time to achieve growth?

What do long haired curlies so for updos? I see some pretty ones at LHC, but they seem geared towards ones and some type 2's.

I would like to learn about dusting as I would like to take care of split ends as I find them so that they don't split further.

Mine is about oh 6 inches past my shoulders in the back does that count as long?

    Mita's is gorgeous I agree!

I've had mine all one length and bsl when curly. I'm not sure how long that was straightened since I never did that. I used to take my ends and just snip off any splits I saw with some regular sally's hair scissors.
I take better care of my hair now so I haven't seen any splits so far though........... so far is the key word I"m betting

I bet your hair would be lovely waist length! I can't go past bsl or so when curly or it gets in my way. I never went for the updos and protective do's. I can do a real loose low pony tail sometimes but that's about it. Whats the point of long hair if it's up all the time or braided I always figure.

Mine's is presently 29 inches in length. It is below shoulder length, but I still want it to grow longer. I am working my hardest to get it to waistlength. Hopefully it won't take me more than 5 years to do so.

Good question about what is long!

To me, long is anything below shoulder length, especially for a curly who has to worry about shrinkage. But, I know that many of the long hair sites wouldn't consider that to be long.

I got trimmed and blown out last week. It was 27" straight and has been 22-23 dry. I'm usually somewhere around BSL right now, probably just a tad above. I imagine that the 3c's and higher would have even more shrinkage than my 3B.

I'm happy we have this board here. I just don't get to see enough curlies on LHC for me to use examples. The things I read from the straighter haired ladies - well I don't know how it all works for curlies. I'd like something around waist length if I can keep my curl. I'll stop at that length or when I lose too much curl.

I have long hair! It's a bit below BSL, so curly it's about 29". Straight, it is 37" or so. I "dust" my own hair - getting hair cut in the salon really cuts down on growth. Since I am pregnant, my hair is really growing, and I would really like to achieve waist length before the shedding sets in! (my greatest fear....)

For updos, I do any updo I see on any hair type, but let my hair do its thing, so instead of the hair along the scalp being straight, I just slick it with pomade and let the little waves and ripples shine, or sometimes I fingerwave them. If I am in the mood, I straighten, or I might curl a few pieces, but usually I just leave my curls as are.

I do a big curly bun with the ends pinned under, I do buns made up of little pin curls, I pin all the hair up in sections and add a pretty headband or barettes, I do a sleek low chignon, I do French twists, I cornrow my roots up into a high fluffy ponytail.... the possibilities are endless! Then I rock the big earrings that can't always be seen under my hair. The key for me is doing updos in small sections because my hair is so thick that it's hard to get it flat enough to make a decent looking updo any other way. It also has to be completely detangled and smooth.

    That is some shrinkage!

It's interesting to read what you do with updos. While I do things to keep my hair back, it's not 'up' much unless it's a work situation that calls for a strict bun that really isn't very protective bacause it has to be pulled fairly tight.

Other than that, I do like French twists, though the thickness of my hair makes me modify mine a bit.

I'd also like to expiriment with some hair sticks.

i'm growing mine out. dry, it looks it's just below shoulder length. (my hair is very layered). wet, the longest pieces are almost bsl. my hair usually grows very fast, but since my miscarriage in november, it feels like my hair is hardly growing at all. i've even had some shedding that you supposedly get *after* you have a baby. i hope it gets back to normal soon.

i am trying not to trim--haven't since early november--but my ends get very dry and i also get those little individual knots on the ends. a stylist told me that those are split ends. any advice on dealing with those? how do you "dust" the ends on your own without creating a disaster of uneven bits?

For something elaborate, I do a style kind of like Keira Knightley's in the newer Pride and Prejudice movie in the scene where she goes to the ball at Netherfield. 4cct451.jpg I couldn't get a good picture of the back, but basically, it's a bunch of sections of hair rolled up and pinned, so it looks like a mound of curls. Almost like her hair is in curlers, but not really. I can't explain it. For a more casual updo, I just kind of twist it up and clip it. Wow, I'm not very good at explaining things  8)

mine is about 30" now and i am starting to see it get caught on things like zippers and prickers in the woods and i think i need to protect it a little more. i've been doing a low side pony sometimes and sometimes a barrette but mostly i wear it down. i use a fleece hairband to keep my ears warm hiking. sometimes it gets caught on a necklace too. i know LHC has all kinds of hints to treat hair like fine spun silk and protect it from all ravages but this is just not my lifestyle. we'll see what carlos says about my ends when i go to devachan on feb 13...i just uploaded some product experiments into a new fotki album. it seems like my hair can look pretty good with a number of products if i style it right and it dries well. who knows??

What am I  ? I have an angled cut so from the front my hair just skims my shoulders. My avatar pic was taken back in November, I think. It's longer when wet, of course. When it's dry, if I pull out a curl and let it snap back, it looks to be about 3-5 inches of snap back.

I'm fighting the "too old to have long hair" as I'm 49 and with the push of my hubby and you other curlies on here, am going to try to get the back of mine to hit BSL :).

thanks Medusa--1/22 was actually air dried -these were taken just before bed when my hair looks its best :) 1/26 was morning hair after sleep plop.

well, as far as age and long hair--we talked about this on the 40+ board at one point--it seems many people get the little cap cuts when reaching a certain age but now it is changing. I agree with you--i spend my days hiking with dogs, summer sneaking into illegal swimming holes and weekends playing banjo and i work at night. i break rules all over the place. i am 57 and realize i will not have the most perfect body at my upcoming 40th high school reunion but i will probably be the only one with almost waist length curls!! my tude is about to the point of insufferability i'd say--and 60 is not so far away  so go for it girl!!!

My hair used to be this long. I cut it in July to my shoulders and donated it to locks of love. I'm not sure if they would use it but I figured it was worth a try.

The weather was very windy that day as you can see from the blur. I actually wore it in a braid earlier that day and the kink is that weird braid style but normally it's a medium loose ringlet.

It grows really fast; It's already grown 5 inches. I miss is being long and can't wait till it gets that way again.

My hair's maybe an inch shy of BSL. It was almost down to my waist last year, but I hadn't trimmed in about a year and a half and b/c of this it wasn't in the best shape. Recently I was looking at a picture from last Christmas, I was shocked at how much hair there was.  Personally I don't really like it to get much longer than BSL, after that it just starts to get too heavy and pull out the curl.

FormerMermaid, I'd be cautious about Locks of Love just because at TLHS.org, a hair site I used to visit, people were saying that LOL was making some of the hair into wigs and selling them. I don't know if it's true or not, but just giving you a heads up.

My hair is right around BSL on low shrinkage days, which have been plentiful lately (not sure if it's the length or something else). I'd like it to get to about waist length, but I think previous dye jobs might impede my progress for a bit :)
