Protein and glycerin free product list

jsuzkelleyjsuzkelley Registered Users Posts: 610 Curl Neophyte
After reading and posting in several different threads about my trial and error in finding products that work for my hair, I have discovered that I need to stay away from protein and glycerin as much as possible. After scouring through this site, I have not been able to find anything really specifically dedictated to this odd combination of products to avoid (seems that most fine-haired curlies like protein, but my hair does not - and living in a dry climate, glycerin is not good either). So...I thought I would start a list of products that are both protein and glycerin free (and, of course, silicone free as well, as I am staying away from those too!). This is not an exhaustive list by any means...in fact, I'm hoping that other curlies with the same issues as me will review and make updates so we have somewhere to go to if we want some product recommendations. This is just what I've found so far:

As I Am Coconut CoWash
As I Am LI
Biolage Conditioning Balm/GVP CB
Boots Essentials Curling Cream
Curls Cocunut Sublime Moist. Condish
CJ CIAB
CJ Curl Rehab
CJ Beauticurls LI

DB Madagascar Vanilla Styling Creme
FOTE Aloe gel
JCS Nourish & Shine
JC Confident Coils

Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
Oyin Hair Dew
Oyin Honey Wash
Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade
Renpure Organics Argan Oil Conditioner
SS Deeply Decadent Moisture Treatment
Uncle Funky's Daughter Culry Magic Curl Stimulator

I have not tried all of these products, so I can't speak to how they perform, but I did check the ingredients list on NC.com. Please share if there are any errors, or if there are other items to add!

TIA! :love4:
2c/3a, botticelli/wavy/'swavy (huh?)
fine, dense, normal porosity/elasticity, dry climate
My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!

You ladies are a lifesaver :')! Humectants..especially glycerin are a huge no for my hair because I live in a subtropical area where the humidity is high 24/7. Glycerin causes my hair to swell up severely and kills many of my braid outs. This has got to be the best recommendation list that I've come across after doing hours worth of Googlr searching for glycerin free products.

    Hello,

And what's about glycerin free, protein free and coconut free products ?

  • tinksaysbootinksaysboo Registered Users, Curl Ambassador Posts: 543 Curl Virtuoso
@Gwladys - some people's hair hates these types of ingredients, so they look for products that don't have them.  They are pretty popular type of ingredients in curly hair products or lists help make the search a lot easier.

Only trial and error can say if you should avoid them, too.

I have the same issue in the winter only. Can’t use any product with glycerin. Glycerin dries out my hair almost instantly when I step outside in the dry winter. Protein my hair likes it but not that much maybe like every other week I condish my hair with a product with protein like Deva Curl Delight but rinse it out all the way.

I’ve been using Cantu shampoo and condish lately and have been getting good results. My hair isn’t as curly but it’s been nicely moisturized.

I thought coconut falls in the protein category?  My hair does not like protein, glycerin or coconut

Coconut is not a protein.  That is false information that is commonly shared in the curly hair community.

Coconut can mimic protein, which is why people falsely call it a protein or say if your hair hates protein it will hate coconut.  But there are tons of protein hating hair that loves coconut.

It's hard to find non-glycerin leave in products. Very hard. I must admit I did not like the kinky kurly knot today at first but then I started to seal on top with an oil and I was fine and didn't make my hair come out or dry out when I used to use glycerin products. I will be curious to see what else comes up. Good luck.
