Curls that change direction???

BrioBrio Posts: 1,432Registered Users
We've been in a cold snap for the past couple of weeks, at least what's considered cold for eastern, NC. Lows have been in the 30's. It got below freezing last night.

My hair does not seem to like the cold. My hair just does not seem as bouncy or curly. It seems to look sort of "blah" to me and more stringy and frizzy. I think I have my best hair days when it rains (aka high humidity).

Lately, I have been noticing that my hair, mostly the hair on the canopy, will start to curl, but when it gets about two inches or so from the bottom, rather than continue the spiral pattern, the curl will reverse direction or straighten out somewhat. This leaves the ends of my hair sorta sticking out. I'll try finger curl the ringlet, but it doesn't seem to help.

What do y'all think? Does this happen to you, too? Is it from the cold? Time for a trim? The ends are damaged? Or maybe the last time I had it cut back mid-December, I got a bad cut and it's not growing out well???

Thanks for listening to my rants and for any suggestions/comments you have!

Same here. I won't say I have my best hair days when it rains but the cold is definitely sucking some of the life out of my waves. Heavy moisture is the only thing that's worked so far - I'm in love again with [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Jessicurl-Too-Shea-Extra-Moisturizing-Conditioner-p-105.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=jessicurl-too-shea-extra-moisturizing-conditioner]Too Shea[/buylink].

I just noticed the same reversal in my own hair so I'm curious what the responses will be. In my case, the clearest examples are at the lower back of my head where the hair is healthiest. A wavelet starts, winds around for a few inches and then balks, straightens out and tries to wind the other way before giving up. I wonder if it could be chalked up to a hormone shift... or some sort of singular event that potentially won't happen again.

Mine will spiral and then go to a wave or a looser curl on dry days.
It's freakishly dry here in Sc too so I'll be using more moisture than before. I swear just when i get my routine down we have a dry spell.

I think I've found out the hard way that if it's really cold and low humitidy out, then I'm better off going productless or with just a leave-in or moisturizing cream styler. At least my hair won't look stringy or thin then from the gel or other styler.

I think the reversal in curl is just a normal curly thing. I call them "phone cord curls."

    I like that term!

I have some that do that. I still get good formation and sprial, it just changes direction. I just thought it was normal to have that sometimes. For me, I haven't noticed anything weather related with it, but it's interesting that some of you have.

I call them "phone cord curls" too. I'm sure the younger kids here probably don't know what we're talking about!

I have a couple of these that show up in the same place all the time. If I see one when it's wet I will try to spiral it around my finger to correct it. But sometimes it doesn't work. My hair does this whether it's cold or hot. It's just one of those weird things, same way those old telephone cords would get that kink -- it was impossible to fix those as well!

Phone cord curl, ha, I love it! It happens to me too. It's like the spiral flattens out somewhat and then reverses. I'm not sure if mine is weather-related or not.

I like the phone cord curl term, too! Good description.

My hair has done this before, but it just seems to be more prominent and with more ringlets now that we have had cold weather. The reversing direction usually is not too bad, but in my case now, it's making the ringlet poke out in a peculiar manner and not flowing with the rest of the hair. You can see it some in my new Fotki album I named "hair diary."

I'm not sure my hair diary is going to work. I'm finding it's hard to capture subtle differences of what my hair looks like on camera.

Lush, thanks for the tip. I was really thinking about that same thing and wondering if it would work better for me when it gets below 40 degrees. For the most part, I've not had luck with leave-ins. However, I've usually combined them with gel and my hair can't take that much "stuff" on it without getting weighed down. I rarely use a leave-in and normally rinse the CO out of my hair pretty thoroughly. However, now that it's cold, maybe I should try this again and skip gel.

I do have some boots on the way (yay!).

I get phone cord curls too.. normally its the same few curls that do it and it drives me crazy!!! they tend to fall longer than all the rest too :(

I'm glad its not just me though!

My hair has always been like this; it's just the way it curls. Sometimes the curl kind of inverts itself and keeps curling, sometimes it straightens out....I've learned to accept it. :?

This has been happening to me alot more lately. I wonder if it doen't have somthing to do with the weather. This is the first time it's been really cold here all winter. It drives me nuts! I fing myself always trying to fix them. I've tried adding extra Recoil to the ends, but it doesn't seem to help.

    Brio ,

In the pic you posted I can actually see what you are talking about. I have been getting these too but not every time. I just wish I knew what caused them. They drive me crazy!! :x I think if my hair did this constantly I would be able to work with it. I do have the 'phone cord' curls too but I think they are two totally different type of curls.

BTW you have beautiful curls :D

Yup...mine does that too sometimes. I've never really noticed that it has anything to do with the weather though.....

I was starting to think my curls were confused and/or suffering from various personality disorders . . . but, alas, they're not alone!

Not a helpful response, but I am glad to see that others suffer from curls flattening, changing direction, and so forth. I have no idea about the potential effects of the weather though . . .

I just recently got a tube of recoil. I was really hoping this was going to be just what I needed to bring my curls back to life. I think it's going to take more, though.

Totally off the subject of phone cord curls, but do you guys think I'm warm or cool? I can't ever figure it out. I'm fair and have blue eyes, burn easily. However, I think I have a tendency to look sallow at times. I don't know what color my hair is anymore, but if you go by my eyebrows, I have no gold or red in them.

I know it's hard to tell these things by pictures. Pictures can really distort hair color and skin tone, etc. Just curious as to any thoughts.

My hair does the phone cord thing, too. In fact, that's what my kid's call it. I have also noticed that I start out with a spiral curling say toward my face it goes for a bit, does the C thing then reverses direction to spiral away from my face. I even have some that don't do the C thing but stay "tight" and suddenly start spiraling the other way. What's funny is that I just figured this out a few weeks ago. I can "correct" it if I twist out my hair when it's wet.

Brio- I've always heard that if you have red or gold tones in you hair that means you're a warm. However, wioth blue eyes, you would probably look best in "cool" colors. I have never figured out the season thing either.

Oh well, it won't be winter forever. It will be hot & muggy before I know it and my hair will be boing-ing back to normal again (I hope!). Maybe it because it's getting longer and just a stage I'm going through.

Yeah, I think I'm probably cool, but I think I look better in yellow jewelry, which is a warm trait. I'm just in a state of confusion today.
