Hair Breaking While Detangling

Hey Ladies!

I need help with detangling. :( Here's my current method: After I co-wash with a diluted version of my RO, I put a whole palm full of conditioner in my hair, let it sit and then try to detangle, mixing more of the conditioner with water as I go. I definitely go really slowly and try to pick apart the knots, but I can still hear the hair snapping as I go through it. I know a lot of people use a comb, but my curls tend to freak out if I even look at it with a comb.

Just for reference, I use DC One Condish as my RO and KCKT as my LI (definitely open to suggestions, but protein is a no go for my hair - it turns into velcro while wet) and then Beautiful Curls Curl Defining Cream and KCCC for the gel. Any product suggestions are definitely appreciated - perhaps I just don't have a conditioner with enough slip?

Products loving my hair:
Co-Wash/LI/RO: DC One Condition
Gel: KCCC, BC Curl Enhancing Cream, DC AnGel

Moisture loving, oil and protein hating (though it tolerates some in products).

Hmm, you probably already do this, but starting at the ends to detangles helps get the knots out. I use One Condition regularly too and find it to the best I've tried to get out tangles. I also don't use a comb. I don't know how much you end up using after the one palmful when you say you add more with water, but I start with 3 palms. The first I smooth over the top of my head down to the ends, and then I separate my hair in 2 sections and use a full palmful on each side. I do not hear any snapping. The only time I struggle is if it has been 3 or more days since I've detangled. So all I can think of is maybe you need to use more of the conditioner? Does this happen every time you detangle, or only when it's been a while? Hopefully others will have ideas.

If I have a really stubborn, nasty tangle, I add a bit of KCKT. It has more slip than OneC which definitely helps me detangle with minimum damage.

You're probably not going to want to hear this, but I had the same problem when I started CG. I used a ton of different conditioners, and nothing really worked.

It wasn't the conditioners, it was my hair. I'd done a trim, but that didn't help. I had a lot of split ends, broken parts, and white dots. All that breakage kept snagging on my other hair, and I was finally breaking it off faster than I was growing it.

I cut all the damaged stuff off, and no more tangles!

    Reducing the tangles helps too..

Putting my hair up in a pineapple at night really helps. Or you can use a silk bonnet.. Anything that stops your hair from thrashing about when you're sleeping works wonders.

I found that using LOTS of conditioner on the ends really helps (less water)
I use a Denman brush, on the last inch of hair ends first then move up slowly, one section at a time. You must be patient. :)

Thanks! I tried using A LOT more conditioner (DC) and then adding KCKT to the stubborn knots. I didn't hear snapping :) I also turned down the water temp quite a bit (which made my curls spring up more, too... double bonus). Thanks for all the help!

Add EVOO to your conditioner for extra slip.

I also thought I'd update again - when you said it was because of damage, you were actually spot on. I went to a different stylist who cut out the razor cut from the other Deva stylist (yes a Deva stylist cut my hair with a razor :dontknow: ). After that, it's been so easy to detangle - nothing ever gets caught. I hate having shorter hair and can't wait until it grows, but at least it's getting healthier!

Hi Craving Curls, glad things are better. Do you think the razored cut had a lot to do with it then?
    UK based wavy :hello2:

Mostly waves, but curls and straight bits too!
Fine to medium, high porosity, medium density, very low elasticity
Highlights damage (growing it out), seems to like protein and need lots of moisture.

Cleanse - CJDF, trying out low poos ; Co wash- Uk chemist brands, Urtekram Rose or Aloe, Hairveda Amala Cream Rinse; RO - varies, Tigi Moisture Maniac, Desert Essence Coconut ; Leave in - Keracare natural textures; Sealant - argan oil
Trying out new things, still looking.

I think it was the razor cut and not using enough condish... Even though my curl pattern is weak, it really needs to be cut blunt. My hair is thirsty and eats just about any moisturizer. Thanks for asking!
