How is the job market where you live?

jada1111jada1111 Posts: 829Registered Users
I'm going to be relocating from Los Angeles in a few months and am curious to know how the employment situation is in other cities.

I had a friend that moved from the Bay area to Delaware. He commuted to Philadelphia for office work. He was commuting for two hours each way and the pay was crap. After six months, he decided to go visit some agencies in NYC and the response has been very positive.

I don't want to go back to NYC to find employment if I don't have to. I honestly don't want to believe that NYC is the only city in the country with jobs. :? I've met people over the years that left NY only to come back a few months or a year later, because jobs in other cities were crappy and not keeping up with the cost of living.

Please tell me that there are OTHER states in the union that are doing well employment wise. By employment I mean secretarial, admin/executive assistant, etc.

TIA! :)

Hawaii has the lowest unemployment rate in the country. The state government is begging people to work but unfortunately the cost of living is so high, it's near impossible to find afordable housing, and the wages do not keep up. On one hand jobs are growing on trees but the down side is you'd need two of them to try to make it. Good luck in your search.

That seems to be the case everywhere.

Since I've been in LA, it seems like all I ever do is worry about money and there's never been enough to save for anything. I have a $400 overdraft limit with Washington Mutual and I've never gone two months without having to use all of it. To make matters worse, they want the money back in full in about 45 days or they close your account. So after I repay the money, I'm back in "survival" mode again. The bank doesn't care, because they make money every time I use it.

To buy a pair of panties is a "splurge" for me. I can't deal with California Unemployment because they pay you once a month for every two weeks of not working. I am ALWAYS broke and behind on my bills. When I did have my temp assignment for as long as I did I was playing catchup on bills and trying to sneak in clothes, hair products, etc. These are considered LUXURIES to me right now.

I start a $14 an hour temp job (hours 9-6) next week with a travel time of two and a half hours each way. Is it worth it? Not when my rent is close to $1,000 and expenses come out to close $300, but at least it'll extend the unemployment and not use it too quickly. I am barely breaking even and as much as I don't want to, may have to back to NYC to make some money and start over. It will be better for me collecting my unemployment checks. NY Unemployment pays you once a week, so you're never broke like you are here. I really wish I knew how things were BEFORE I came here, but sometimes you have to find things out for yourself. I'm just surprised that the unemployment (temp and perm) situtation here is so crappy. Never in a million years did I think it was this bad.

My boyfriend's Salvadorian and he doesn't have a problem finding work, because he KNOWS people and somebody's always hooking him up with something. He says California's better than El Salvador, but I consider California to be MY El Salvador - I need to flee back to east coast or else I'm gonna starve! LOL! :D

I've called a few agencies in San Francisco and they sound promising. It's alot closer, plus airfare is cheaper.

Sigh, the answer will come to me soon. I do know this though, living on "E" is not any way to live.

It's pretty subjective, but Metro Boston's not bad if you have a car. I personally would not work in downtown Boston (I have in the past), but there's a lot of business both there and in the 'burbs. This is not a "hot" town like NYC, where I grew up and lived before moving up here. It's definitely a good place if you're in college or have husband and kids. For older singles, not so great. And the cost of living is high.

A goood web site to evaluate places to live along multiple criteria:

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.

Most of my friends that I grew up with in NYC have moved south - Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas.

Much more affordable housing/cost of living.

Yes, I've been talking to a couple of people by PM on the board about it. I just want to make sure the EMPLOYMENT situation is happening BEFORE I move there. I do not want a repeat of my LA experience.

I think it really depends on what type of job you are looking for. And before moving you could probably do research somehow to find out if the type of job you are looking for will be available in that area.

I think the job market in the northeast is pretty good, but it depends what industry you're in. I live just over the Mass. border in Nashua, NH and while I work in NH now, there are a LOT of job opportunities in Massachusetts that would not be a terrible commute. Manchester, NH is also a bit further north (where I work now and lived for many years) and it is considered one of the top cities to buy real estate in now.

The job market in NJ is strong. Lots of employment possibilities. My company pays over $40K to start for administrative assistants.

Edited to add the downside: High cost of living, especially housing and auto insurance. Cheaper than NYC, though.

People tend to like good incomes, good benefits, maybe somewhat reasonable hours, job security, *room for advancement*...and when you don't live in a big city, it is hard to find companies that meet all of your expectations.

There are small businesses and non-profits to work for, plenty of jobs for accountants and nurses and such...but not a lot of big companies to grow in. You have to plan your future around moving about.
