Does anyone else get irritated when people play with their hair?

Or when they play with other people's hair without asking their permission?

Yes I get mad! It's rude. I wouldn't just reach out and touch someone else's hair. I reserve the privilege of touching my hair only for people I have intimate relationships with. :)

Is it weird that i like it when people play with my hair? Obviously i like it when my girlfriend does, but i also like it when strangers do too. I think its hilarious when they start asking questions like, "how is it so curly", "how do you brush you hair?", and my favorite "have you ever straightened it??"

I cannot stand when someone plays with my hair. It's a quick way to completely piss me off. To me it's like touching my face. Hands OFF.

The only times I have ever had anyone touch my hair, I was in grade school. I have a very sensitive scalp and could feel it even when someone was just touching the edges of the frizz. They were usually very embarrassed, and apologetic when I turned to see who was touching my hair. But, yes it irritated me then, and would irritate me if it happened now.

OMG, I forgot all about those classroom incidents!! My mom, bless her heart, used to brush out my hair which was all 1 length and very long, making it into a big long pouf. It was common for whoever was sitting behind me to complain that my hair was covering up their worksheets or book on their desk! But they wouldn't usually just push it out of their way, they would play with it! The teacher would yell at them sometimes, lol.

I agree that it's super rude to just reach out and touch someone's hair without asking. I can see why that would be really annoying to people.

That said, when it comes to me personally - I LOVE it when people touch my hair, whether they ask or not (well, the only people who touch my hair without asking are friends and family. I probably wouldn't react well to a stranger or loose acquaintance touching without asking, but I've never had this happen).

I also play with my own hair quite a lot. I know it's a bad habit - does it really irritate people a lot though? Yet another reason to break the habit.....

I feel it's rude to touch anyone's head unless you have a close relationship with them/asked beforehand.

I've had more people SMELL my hair than actually touch it. Which is just THEE most awkward thing ever! To just have someone go "What smells like Vanilla/Peppermint/Citric" and then have someone without warning with their face all in your hair :goofy:.

I'm weird. I don't like people within 1-foot of my space. Even at work I am like that. I won't say anything, just move so there's space.
I was made fun of growing up as a child with my unprocessed hair so when it comes to my hair I am sensitive and mean business.
Usually people ask before touching it but you do get those who just "LOVE" natural hair and feel overwhelmed to touch my Afro or Afro Puffs

I hate when people touch mine too! I also hate the questions that come along with it. It's like people are amazed of curls, it says a lot about the society we live in. :-/

LoL! Most guys like for us to play in their hair. I don't get mad unless the person is just totally disrespectful with it. I mean, I'd rather they didn't of course. I guess it's "annoying" but not "enraging" to me. :)

People need to realize that just because you like the look of something doesn't mean you can just reach out and touch it. That applies to EVERYTHING!!

I don't mind if people ask first. My friend's roommate was super amazed by my hair, she asked if she could touch it, I said ok. She spent 30 seconds sproinging one curl - it was kind of amusing, and she did ask first.

If you don't ask first I'm all "GET OFF!!!"

Close friends and family of course are exempt to the rule, though they usually don't touch (well, except my husband, he loves my hair).

One time, when I was in class, I was wearing my fro out. And one guy sticks a picture in my hair!! Another time, they were throwing hard candies at it, to which my fro bounced it right back. was so embarrassed, even though everyone said they love my hair and how awesome they think it is. Now, that's what I call other people playing with my hair, lol

i have a co-worker who likes to touch my hair (it's cool, she shares her unwanted oyin handmade stuff with me). the other day, she pulled a curl at the back of my head and stretched it out. then tried to tuck it back in without me noticing! lots of giggles the rest of the day.

i don't mind the touching, as long as they ask first.

my biggest pet peeve is when people tell me "i bet your hair looks really pretty when it's straight." grrrr!

It can be flattering, but it all depends on the context and if they ask first. I do play with my own hair a lot.
The worst though is when someone (close to me or not) rakes through my dry hair! Frizzies and stringy curls forever after that!

:?It only happened to me once that a lady I vaguely know came up to me cooing "ooh, aren't your curls lovely", she then proceeded to stick her hand into my hair, which made me feel uneasy, but she tried to rake it downwards, in which she got stuck and just yanked her hand out, ouch! After that painful experience, I would now visibly back away if I saw someone's hands trying to connect with my hair!

I have had a co-worker ask me if I have a "perm" but I haven't had anyone try to touch my hair yet (thankfully). I'm reasonably sure I would consider punching them if they did. That is soooooo rude! It would never occur to me to do that to anyone else, not even someone I know well. I'm a firm believer in that 18 inches of space. If you get any closer than that you better be planning on marrying me! (only kidding)

I know that some people feel that anything they find fascinating is public domain, like a pregnant woman's stomach (now THAT takes nerve!).

I agree with the person who said they take a step back. I would try that first... then if the hair grabber didn't take the hint, I'd punch their lights out! Oh wait, that would lead to a lawsuit... never mind, I'll just run! :)

Really? I take it as a compliment when people bounce my curls (: It makes me feel like I'm doing something right hahaha. It is kinda weird when strangers do it, though, but usually that doesn't happen.

Yea I get frustrated because people usually disguise "weave checking" me with "just playing with it" and my family is very superstiscios and I try not to be but its hard when things are instilled in you all your life. All my aunts and my mom and gma would always tell me not to let people touch my hair or play in it cus it would fall out.
  • naturalNstylishnaturalNstylish Posts: 11Registered Users
Oh man! I forgot about the "weave check". A woman I worked with many years ago did that! I forgot all about it until I read your post. I had long, relaxed hair then and I guess she just couldn't believe it was all me!

I am a phlebotomist at a hospital. Man the older ladies LOVE my curly hair. "Is it real? Is it natural?" and they instantly grab my hair. I understand Im in your personal space drawing you blood but THAT DOESNT MEAN YOU CAN TOUCH MY HAIR!! ick ick ick. It gives me heebe-jeebies. I feel bad for the little ladies sometimes and try not to get mad. They mean well :) But honestly.....curly hair and old ladies...what is it!?

As far as playing with hair. I have a habit of twirling my hair without realizing. I was having coffee with my cousin the other day and she timed me for 45 minutes twirling my hair before she screamed "STOP"

Because my hair is so springy (I assume) babies actually like to play with my hair. I use to baby sit a lot growing up and I've never had a child under two not try and play with my hair.

Considering the audience, it's pretty cute...it does make for questionable substances accumulating in my hair though :-|.

I don't understand why my playing with my own hair pisses off or irritates someone else, unless they're jealous. It's my hair, I'm playing with my own hair, what business is it of yours? That's my take on it. I'm not hurting you.
I freely acknowledge I have a habit of playing with, and twirling my curls, but so what? It's not hurting anyone. It's not like I'm picking my nose! :toothy6:
