How to soften scab hair (expierences with it)

mixedecuamixedecua Posts: 46Registered Users
Its only the middle of my scalp where the hair just feels hard and brittle and i cant comb through it.The rest of my hair is fine and curly so i know its not my real texture.I always moisturize my hair but nothing works on the middle of my hair no matter what products it stays hard n brittle and impossible to detangle.

I need some tips on how to soften this hair until it grows out and my real texture comes in

Has anyone else exprienced scab hair?

Girl! I know what you mean. It's the most annoying thing EVER!!! I BC 3 weeks ago and discovered I have scab hair on my sides, in the back and some spots in the middle and front. There are some spots where I see my true texture. It's super soft and coily. But the scab hair is just all over my head which makes it hard to even see my curls :(

Moisture is thee biggest problem. It doesn't hold any at all!!! Only the part that are my true texture. I'll do a twist-out and drench my hair in Shea Moisture CES and Jojoba oil. And the next morning it's as if I didn't waste an hour applying product to my hair.

The only thing I can recommend is DEEP CONDITION, COWASH, and DEEP CONDITION! Do those 2 every week to "soften" up the scab hair. I have noticed that when I deep condition (with mixed chicks and some olive coconut oil under my steamer) my hair has soften up a little. BUT, the scab hair is STILL there. It just feels really terrible on my ends.

Really and truly there's NOTHING you can do about the course, fuzzy dryness! You would have to eventually cut it off. I'm just waiting until July to cut mine off because 1) I JUST BC and I don't want to cut my hair again and 2) I don't want to cut my hair so soon and then find out I have to recut again because I didn't get all of the scab hair or some more has grown which would be even worse. So until then, I'm going to box braid my hair, accumulate some growth and then cut it OFF!!!

But just remember. Deep Condition and Cowash. It's helps a little.

Yup! I completely understand where you're coming from. At least you're scab hair is only in one spot and not all over the damn place like mine. But yea, your best bet is to continue to deep condition and to wait it out until you're ready to cut it.

I had to cut my scab hair off it felt rough, dry, and brittle. No amount of product or oils made it soft

I'm still growing mine out. It's not noticeable because the rest of my hair covers it up

    @hippiedoll you didn't BC right?!
  • ohtashohtash Posts: 90Registered Users
Idk if I'm still growing scab hair. The very back feels really course when I grab my hair from the root to the ends. So I think I want to wait to grow that out. The sides, front and middle feels soft at the roots but when I get to the ends i can feel the scab.

I want to cut mine in August/September. It will be 5/6 months post BC. The reason why I don't want to cut my hair so soon is because I don't want to cut my hair then have to go back and cut it some more because I'm still growing scab hair. I just want it to grow out and then I want to cut it that one time.

No I didn't. I had damaged hair that was breaking off at the back of my hair almost in the middle. That part was so dry and brittle. I just took the scissors and cut the hair off. It's not noticeable unless I separate the front from the back

It's the same for me! It's not damaged BUT it's so freaking DRY and HARD! The whole back is scab hair. I want to cut it soooooo bad! I'm just going to rock my box braids again. I can't deal.

I found deep conditioning helped but that section was still the driest part of my hair. I was fed up with it being dry so I cut the damage off. Made no sense to hold on to it.

I find that my hair can never be detangled with this scab hair and i im expiercing alot of breakage because of all the combing and even if i put it in protective styles
  • ohtashohtash Posts: 90Registered Users
Yes, it's just horrible! And I can't even enjoy my hair because it just in this awkward stage. I've been deep conditioning and it helps a little but I just want to get rid of it. I knew that once I made the decision of going natural I wasn't going to go back to perms but if I had a little doubt of going back, scab hair just changed all of that. There's no way in HELL I can go back and start perming again knowing the crazy after effects.

I've had scab hair in the same section for the past 2 years. I was just like f it. Time to cut it off. I'm curious as to why the hair is still growing back straight but the texture isn't rough and tough like before.

I am experiencing the exact same thing. I BC'd Oct 2013 and honey I am still cutting off hair to get rid of scab hair. I was wearing twists and braids for a while and when I took them out this last time my hair was about 5 or 6 inches but my ends were so hard, dry and brittle I had to cut it down to about an inch and a half and I still have dry hard ends. I guess time heals all wounds but it's just so danggone frustrating.
