Hairpills-What do you take & how it works

esmeraldaesmeralda Posts: 187Registered Users
I have been taking Phytophanere since 1.january.
My nails grow faster, but they have always been strong.
The main difference is my eyelashes & brows, they grow really fast & long!! I got 4 bottles of the stuff in Paris & I'll let you know how it goes.

Besides this, I also take a multivitamin (Spectro) & omega 3.

Yes, let us know how it goes! I've never heard of Phytophanere, and you probably can't get it here in the U.S. Sounds interesting, though. I've heard omega 3 fatty acids are really good for the hair and skin.

I take 2000mcg of biotin (B vitamins) daily. I've only been taking it for a few weeks. I also have been eating gelatin every day. I also haven't been doing that very long, but something is already making my nails grow faster and stronger. Someone on another thread said it must be the gelatin because biotin did nothing for her nails. I got a growth spurt earlier this month after I cut my hair to my shoulders - probably because I liked that style and had planned to keep it that length. Hair always grows fast when you DON'T want it to. Now that I decided I want it long again, it will probably grow very slowly!

Biotin did nothing for my nails but I might have a different deficiency though. I have taken biotin for three years now. I added in GNC's Nourishair. I used to take that once a day and I didn't really notice anything but when I took it the recommended twice a day my hair started growing faster.
ETA: I started taking silica too a couple of months ago. I take a few other suppliments for health, Magnesium, calcium with D, DHEA, general multivitamin, joint formula.

REcently my hair growth seemed not as fast but then I saw tons of new growth coming in. I think it's just that cycle of the year where that happens but I definitely have more this year than last. I've been the gnc vits for 6 months. My hair usually grows excrutiatingly slow and it's up to normal and in the summer faster growth than what they say is the norm.

My nails though still are weak and have ridges. I think I'll add in gelatin as soon as I find it locally.

I was curious so I looked and they sell Phytophanere on Ebay. A two month's supply is around $40. Hmmm, I'll have to think about this some more.

The two things that are huge for me are protein drinks and a low dose iron supplement. Biotin did nothing, and prenatal vitamins didn't seem to make a difference. I stopped the protein drinks and iron for two months because my doctor wanted to do bloodwork, and during that time hair growth virtually stopped and my nails broke. I know for sure my hair stopped growing because I have some grays at the roots and they took a while to grow in during that time. Now, that being said, I am not anemic and cleared with my doctor whether it was okay to take the iron supplement. The body does not break down iron and it accumulates in the liver and can be fatal!!! Always check with your doctor when supplementing with iron. Protein is very important because if there is not enough the body will not send it to your hair for growth instead sending it to the vital organs and muscles. I currently take GNC ultranourish, gelatin, low dose iron, and one protein drink a day(should really be two, though). I also try to do scalp massage every night.

I am not sure if prenatals really make the hair grow. They're just regular multivitamins with extra folic acid and calcium. Pregnancy definitely does though! I planned my pregnancy so I started prenatals a few months before I wanted to conceive, and I don't think they made a difference to my hair, but it tends to grow faster in the summer anyway which is when this time frame was.

I take a these vitamins everyday and my hair grows twice as fast as the average speed:
Since the end August I have been taking:
    1 Women's One a day
1 500 mg tablet of Silica
1 1000 mg tablet of MSM (apparently increases the length hair will grow to)
1 500 mg Evening Primrose oil softgel capsule
1 500 mg FlaxSeed Oil softgel capsule
    2 600 mcg Biotin tablets
    2 GNC NourishHair Tablets

Wow Jaxie--That's alot. Does the womens one a day have some of the same vitamins as the GNC NourishHair?

It has some of the same vitamins, but for healthy hair you need the higher doses of those speific nutrients (such as biotin). I know it does seem like a lot, but i take them all after breakfast and I take 2 or 3 at time with water and its not bad, I'm so used to it now i kinda forget that it is odd!

Yeah that's what I'd like to know too, if NourishHair can be taken in the place of a multivitamin? I've heard a lot about it on here, but I take a multi and would be afraid of ODing it if I added NourishHair.

Thanks for posting, medusa. I posted the info for Hair, Skin and Nails below because that's another one that I'm looking at. THis way we can compare. I'm surprised the Nourishair doesn't have iron or calcium. You could almost do it as a multivitamin if it had those. I don't like that you have to take 3 pills of Hair, Skin, and Nails daily. If I took one of the supplements with my multi, I'd be a little worried about it being too much. I know that it's difficult to OD on Vitamin D, but I don't know about other vitamins. I'll have to do some research into this.

CurlyMireya i doubt u would OD on nourishair with another multi vit , i was like u and only took the nourishair but decided on a multi vit to take with it. the multi vit i take is a time release vit so my body gets a lil each time thru out the day and i also, excuse my pun, go to the bathroom to release what my body doesnt need and believe me i release alot thru the day so that helps , plus the guy that sold me on the multi vit said that since there was a lil % of each vits in the nourishair and i wouldnt OD with the multi vit im taking now , been taking it for a few weeks and so far so good . i got a trim about a week ago cuz my hair was growing fast when i had it trimmed a few weeks ago before, plus with the nourishair u suppose to take 2 a day , i only take one a day , same thing with the multi vit , just 1 a day . i know ppl who take more vits a day then i do and they seem to be fine.

I take the one I do because it's higher in the same things. I don't take a separate one for skin but I do take silica and a joint formula.
The other supps I take are for other things and one or two happen to help hair also. LIke protein powder and my joint formula.

So far I feel better not worse but if I get nauseous I know I have too much of something in me. It always makes me sick to my stomach

I am taking Natrol vitamins. The label says you should take about six a day! Please I am taking two along with my other supplements. Has anyone taken this brand of vitamins before. I got mine from Walgreens. My brother sent them to me because the Walgreens where I live does not carry this multiple vitamin for some unknown reason.

I am back to taking good old Flintstones! :)

I took them during my first hair challenge (05-06) and grew about 6 inches that year. Of course, other things probably helped - excercise, CG routine, diet, oiling, scalp massages, DTs and lots of water.
I hate taking pills and since my kiddies also take them, I hardly forget to take them. Plus they are fun to eat! :)

Has anyone seen the Dollar General brand of hair, skin, and nails vitamins? You only have to take it twice a day versus three times with similar formulas I've seen. Contains 2500mcg biotin. Only 20% DV of calcium though, so I'd have to take a calcium supplement along with it (I'm thin and my doctor is already worrying about osteoporosis). I've gone back to taking 1000mcg biotin a day, but am hesitant to go past that - my body is sensitive to new things added to my diet. I'll see how I do with just biotin and my multivitamin, but this is something to keep in mind. Just $5 a bottle, too!

I wanted to update on my gnc Ultra Nourishair vitmains, I take those and Magnesium and DHEA (I mention the latter since I don't know if they help hair or not)
The gnc I've taken since this past summer and before taking them my hair went through a pretty extreme shedding. My hair got thin enough to see scalp in some places. I was looking at hair pics and boy has my hair changed! I have much more hair now and I barely shed at all. What a relief! I swear I thought I was going bald for a bit there
My hair is growing back thick stranded too. Which is odd since I've had fine strands all my life. They feel like thick threads now.

Wow, medusahair, that is encouraging! :) I've heard biotin can make hair grow in thicker, but didn't know if it was true or not. It's supposed to be really good for shedding. I've taken biotin alone (well with a multivitamin) and haven't noticed a real difference in my hair's growth or appearance, but I haven't taken it longer than a month or two at a time. I tend to give up on it. Your post and others have me hopeful, though - I'm going to stick with it long-term now. I still have a full bottle of biotin, but bought the Dollar General hair vitamins for when that runs out. They sound similar to Nourishair, but they contain calcium and more biotin. They don't have the amino acid complex that NH does. But I like that I won't have to take a calcium supplement with it.

Medusa, have you used the regular Nourishair? I guess the UN has more amino acids and MSM. Somewhere I remember reading that UN is much better than Nourishair. It's only $10 a bottle, so that's not bad - if the DG vitamins don't work for me, I may give it a try.

I took biotin for 2 years before taking the Ultra nourishair but I didn't see any change. I've been taking the ultra nourishiar I never took the regular formula.
The biotin definitely didn't do the hair changes, it's something in the UN. It could be the silica. I had been taking a multi vitamin and a joint formula along with biotin for years. It wasn't until I took the UN I saw increased growth and changes in the way my hair looked. Aminos or the silica is my guess on that. OH hey I just noticed it has iodine in there. It could be that too since iodine deficiency can cause a thyroid upset and that causes the hair loss and thinning

I hope your formula works for you. You'll have to let us know

Thanks, I will! That's interesting about the biotin because it's always being touted as this great hair supplement, though I've heard more than one person say it did nothing for their hair. I've never taken it for more than a few months at a time because it seems that when I get up to a certain dosage (2500mcg usually), I start to miss menstrual periods. I thought it could've been just a coincidence, but it seems like whenever I am off of it, my periods are more regular. I'm only taking 1000mcg biotin now and will see how that goes for awhile. I doubt it will do much since the 2500mcg for 3 months didn't do much of anything but strengthen my nails. I'm just trying to use up this last bottle. Good luck with the UN - hope your good results continue! :)

    I'm taking
    Evening Primrose Oil
    Cod Liver Oil
    Multi-vitamin and minerals
    B-complex

I only added the B-complex because I'm constantly on BCP for medical reasons and was told this would be good to take while I'm doing that, anyway it has Biotin in it. Last time I took Biotin I felt as though it did nothing for me but since I've added the B-complex my hair has really started to grow like a weed. I had my highlights redone at the beginning of May and now have 1inch roots. That is quite a bit of growth for me. I'm hoping for bra strap length.

Apparently BCP can cause a deficiency in B vitamins. It even says on the back of the bottle I bought 'may be beneficial to women taking the pill'. I get really tired when I take the BCP and no B-complex so I figure it must be doing something for me.
