Gelatin in FSG?

I came across a few threads where some people said they add gelatin to their FSG. Since gelatin has protein along with some vitamins and minerals, I'm rather tempted to try this because I want to see how my hair would take to more protein(aside from just plain FSG). I'd try a PT but I'm afraid to try it. :/

What I don't know is, how much do I add to the gel? The amount of gel I make is usually 3-4 oz. Also, does this make the gel hard?

Thanks!

I think standard practice is to add 1 envelope of gelatin per cup of FSG, give or take how much you like.
It shouldn't make your gel hard as gelatin is.... squishy? I think it also helps with hold.

I've been meaning to add some gelatin in, but keep forgetting >.>
Someone said to dissolve the gelatin into the hot water first, then add in your flaxseeds, or else it can get clumpy.

Don't know if this helps but I don't add gelatin to my FSG, I use marshmallow root instead.
I find that the marsh. root makes the FSG thicker and makes my hair really soft.

If you're adding gelatin just as a thickener, the root is, IMO an alternative. If you're adding it as a protein additive, then of course it's not (I add protein seperately when I want protein).

Just thought I'd throw that out there :)

    Thanks to both of you!

I'm new to protein for hair so I thought that if I added gelatin to my gel, it would add protein to my hair without having to do a PT. I know that sounds stupid.

I'll probably just have to find a homemade PT recipe around here and try it someday.

First of all - I LOVE the gelatin PT!!!

2nd, I put gelatin in my FSG. AIgirl suggests 1tsp, I believe. I think I put that or a little more, but it was no more than half the envelope!

My hair LOOOOVES protein, though, so I added a little CNPF to the mix, as well.

But try the gelatin PT! It's great!!!

I'll look for that PT recipe! I'm even tempted to try one with avocado because my loves avocado oil.

I know this will sound dumb but the reason I'm afraid to try a PT is because I don't want my hair to turn out the way it did when I tried going CG. I lost almost all of my curl and it took many washings to get it back to what it was prior to trying CG.

However, if it will help my hair to become curlier then I'm all for it!

No, that doesn't sound stupid. Sometimes you have to be careful about how much protein you add and in what form. You just have to find what works for you :)

I bought some vegan protein at the healthfood store, and disolved about 1/4 tsp in maybe 1/8c water, and add that to my FSG when the seeds are cooking, and that's how I add protein to my FSG. And even then, I don't always use the protein FSG, just when I feel my hair needs it. It's hard to say when I feel my hair needs it though! :D Just when my curls are droopy, I guess.

That's a great way to give hair protein! That's another thing to try out. :)

I think I know what you mean by droopy curls. Mine get that way from time to time.

Is protein mainly used on a specific hair type like fine, coarse, etc. or does that not really matter?

Hey Calypso. Protein needs basically break down like this:

    Fine Hair - needs protein
Medium Hair - balance of protein and moisture, find what works
Coarse Hair - needs moisture as it already hangs onto protein

Low Porosity Hair - needs moisture
Normal (medium) Porosity Hair - balance of protein and moisture, find what works
High Porosity Hair - needs protein
    CG since 11/2011
    2c /3a F /Mii, low porosity

    Go To Products /Routine:
    Clarifying: Suave Essentials Strawberry
Low Poo: Renpure Luxurious Argan Oil
CO: Suave Essentials Strawberry, V05 Kiwi Lime
RO /LI: Tresemme Perfectly (un)Done, Cure Care, V05 Kiwi Lime Squeeze, Suave Essentials Strawberry, Renpure Brazilian Keratin (old formula)
Stylers: LALSG, AIF, HETT, Suave Professionals Firm Control
    PT: IAGirl's as needed

    Thanks msg and Geek_Chic!

I'll have to stop by that thread and check things out. :)

At least now I understand more about porosity and texture. I just looked up more on texture and I think I'm not just medium but a combination of medium and fine.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help! :D

Another big fan of the gelatin PT here. I do one at least once every two weeks. I've recently started to add CNPF to my FSG. Loving it! My hair is fine with normal to low porosity.

And hair changes as we get older. My hair did not used to be as fine as it is now. When I was in my 20s I would never have called my hair "fine"; it was not remotely what you would call fine. Now it is medium-fine and a bit more delicate than it used to be. I find it does need a bit of protein now and then. My mom's hair is kind of the same (though she was always fine, now she is very, very fine).

Eh, I guess it happens. Hair ages too.

I think I saw a thread recently where someone used Neutral Protein Filler from Sallys and had decent results. It's liquid, so you can add it to anything

Also, where do you buy marsh root? I think that's what makes KCKT so slippery and I love that.

    Thanks again!

I'm going to try a gelatin PT later on this week. I hope my hair will take to it. :)

Sara, I don't what other forms it comes in but I do remember seeing marshmallow root in capsule form on Amazon. :)
