Need some product recommendations

queencainqueencain Posts: 25Registered Users
After reading the Curly Girl book I am now out to find some products for my hair. I want to avoid sulfates, cones, and protein. Would you all have any suggestions on a low poo and a gel? The one product I was thinking of the Kinky Curl Come Clean...but then realized it has an orange scent....which is migraine central for me.

I have 2c hair that is very porous and coarse. I've highlighted, blow fried, and flat ironed my hair in the past, but I'm done with all of that. (except maybe the highlighting...) I am having my hair cut be a highly recommended stylist this weekend. So excited.

This is the routine I'm thinking...
Lo Poo - need recommendations
Dish - Tresemme Naturals
DT/LI - GFTN
Stylers - need recommendations...thinking about trying the FSG but would love any recommendations

Would love any feed back or product suggestions.

at least I think...still learning

I've found most low-poos very drying. The best exception I've found is Shea moisture.

I like the Tresemme Naturals Conditioners for co-washing. The Radiant Volume formula is light enough that my roots don't feel gunky (I hated Suave Coconut). If your hair needs lots of moisture, you might not need to low-poo. I can't co-wash exclusively.

The Shea Moisture will remove buildup but didn't leave my hair feeling stripped the way that many sulfate-free shampoos do (Come Clean was one of the worst as far as my hair feeling dry- I use Come Clean when I need to seriously clarify).

Another option would be to try a cleansing conditioner (I can use these almost exclusively with very little need to low-poo or clarify). It's basically a conditioner with mild cleansers- you get the moisture of co-washing but (almost) with the cleansing of a low-poo. The two drugstore brands I've tried are L'Oreal EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner and Curls Creamy Curl Cleanser. You can get the Curls products at Target or Sally's. I also noticed a line at Sally's called As I Am and they had a Coconut Co-Wash which greatly intrigued me.

Thanks so much for helping me...I know I've probably asked some of the same questions in other posts ;) I got my hair appointment moved to today, so I'm excited to hear what she suggests.

I did make the fsg last night and I think I love it...seems like my hair liked it better but next time I'll use more. Do you add anything to yours?

I haven't tried FSG. I'm intrigued by it, but not enough to spend the time making it (only because I'm never home). There's probably a thread somewhere (natural hair care, maybe?) with add-in ideas. Maybe over the summer when I don't have choir 3 days a week I'll try it...

I can't wait to hear about the haircut! Be sure to post some pics! I'm probably gonna try a deva cut soon.

That's something I meant to ask...where is the best place to find out about haircuts or styles? And I assume there are threads with before/after pics. Would love to look at them for motivation during this horrible hair period that I'm in. ;)

You can check the stylist/salon forum for recommendations. There is a CG before and after thread under General Discussion thread. I think it's called "Post your before and after CG pics". And yes, the difference is really amazing.

I'm a 3C low porosity, and I may be protein sensitive. However, Curl Care by Dr Miracle Rehydrating Shampoo (sulfate free) works fine on my hair. I've used it only twice so time will tell, but so far I've noticed that a little bit goes a long way. You said that orange smell gets to you so I should mention the smell of this--robitussin with a minty after smell. This stuff also tingles. As for stylers I use a Suave gel every now and again if I need to smooth down my frizz but I haven't used it since before I went CG. Between my Co wash days I use a spritzer I made by mixing conditioner and water. I'll probably add some oil to it when I find an oil that works. (I went CG a few weeks ago so I'm still experimenting with stuff.)

    Anyway, Hth :)
