3a's- does your hair ever lose curl with length?

seamelody14seamelody14 Posts: 282Registered Users
When my hair is long, it's full of ringlets, but I recently cut it shoulder length (to cut off damage) and I'm only getting very loose curls, mostly waves actually. Does this happen to anyone else?

I remember reading somewhere (here, I'm sure) that this is sometimes the case for 3a hair. For some 3a curlies, a certain amount of length is needed to get ringlets.

This definitely is the case with me. My signature photos were taken last summer - you can see waves on top, some ringlety parts on the bottom. I haven't had a haircut since then, so I've got a few more inches of length, and I have LOTS more curl now than I did then. I don't know why my hair won't curl right out of my scalp, but give it a few inches and I've got curls everywhere!

I'm a good speller! My iPhone keyboard? Not so much.

My hair used to be down to my waist- It curled, but it was in sort of long S shaped curls. It only went to ringlets when I cut it shoulder length- So for me, curl shape changed with length, but it got curlier when the extra weight and dead hair was cut off.

 Yes, this is most definitely the case for me. My hair is past my shoulders and has a more defined curl than when it was shorter, which I'm more than pleased with!

It's completely opposite with my hair. The longer it gets, my 3a curls become more like 2c...more wavy than curly. Few years ago I cut my hair really short and it was crazy curly almost like Afro...:thumbleft: I wish it stayed that way

Yes, this is the case for me too. My ringlets are more define with length, and no matter how long ( or short) my hair is, I don't get a lot of root curl. I've also noticed that I don't get a lot of shrinkage either - even my curliest ringlets are sort of naturally elongated. I think this may be because I'm more a mix of 2c and 3a curls.

Mine used to lose it very quickly as my hair reached about shoulder length, but at the time I was doing all sorts of awful things to my hair. I was also losing clumps or hair because of how damaged it was. Now it's bouncy and I haven't had a cut since September or october.

My hair needs to be longer to curl - I'm growing out a super short cut (for six months now) and I'm just now beginning to get "my real curls" - although, once they get long enough to make a ringlet, they'll curl to the root - just not when it's shorter. Odd,I know.

Mine is the same. When it gets to 20 inches, I have big, fat spirals--victorian "sausage curls". Short=misbehaving straight for me.

My hair gets curlier when it's shorter and there's not as much hair on it. I got a shorter cut a few days ago and I can definitely see a difference!

Well, judging by the other responses, it seems to be fairly normal. I wear my hair combed-out wavy a lot of back in a headband because it is too short to curl now. Without help, it could pass for wavy. I'm mainly focused on getting it a little past shoulder length by taking care of it.

I think 3a curls need to be kept away from the scalp to curl right. The curl pattern is gentle and relatively big, so the locks need room and length to curl up on themselves. Just my theory of how it works. :read2:
Dense but fine and delicate 3a hair. Feels like a dandelion without product. Difficulties in getting less puff and more definition when short.

my hair shrinks up more when it is shorter. Maybe it is because I have more 3b hair than I think I do.

That's the exact way my hair is! The shorter it is, the curlier it is. As it grows out, I lose the curls.

Mine is curlier at this shoulder length than it was long, but I can't tell yet if its because of weight lost or damage lost. When it was long, so much of it was fried. I'm growing it back out to APL or so, so I guess we'll see lol!

I always get ringlets at the end of my hair, but I have noticed that my hair gets curlier when I let it grow out a little. My hair really has been curling well these last few weeks. Of course it has been extra hot lately...:headbang:

Yes, it does. My hair has always gotten curlier with length. It also makes a difference when cut in layers, or all one length. If very long, and all one length, its nothing but ringlets.

I had a great deal of damage and have been keeping my hair short. It's in the 2's now. 2c in places, a in the back because it's stacked. I'm very curious to see how my curl bounces back when I do let it grow. It's too hot for that now ;)

*let me add a small section of the hair framing my face, and the underside, has always been in the 2's. And cherub curls to boot. I have noticed that the curl holds better in these areas when longer.

Worn out iPhone. Need I say more?

My hair is the same way! Back in 2008 I had a bob which was about chin length, (i was also straightening it nearly everyday...i regret it now), but I lost my curls and it was definitely in the 2's...probably a 2b. Now that it's about chest length, its definitely back at 3a. My only issue is I still have short layers (beginning about chin length) and they still aren't holding the curls...they're all wavy. :( The hair on the bottom layer is all ringlets, it's just the top layer thats wavy. My hair is so thick though when I let the layers grow out its too much to manage. Sigh, can't ever win

yes exact same here!! my hair has been shoulder length or shorter for many years and all i got were 2b waves, but as I've grown it out it get a lot more curl to it. My hair is ridiculously thick and the only ringlets that are always present at any length are right around my temples. So don't worry too much, just give it time and your beautiful curls will come back :)

Me too! I thought it was just me! I'm so glad I found this thread. Good to know that my curls aren't alone in defying gravity/weight.

When my hair is shorter, it's more wavy than curly pattern-wise.

When my hair is long enough, then I get ringlets (except for the back at the very bottom, which is almost always straight - anyone else have some of that).

Just another good reason to keep growing my hair long - if my curl pattern only improves with length, I think I can ignore the urge to chop it all off in the middle of the summer when it is so very hot.

Here is a picture of my 3a/3b hair at different lengths. I have strong root curl and sharpie sized spirals, but I definitely lose curl as I approach hip length.

I have that straight under layer in the back too. my curls tighten up with length also.

Thank you all for this thread!! My curls went flat after my daughter was born and I chopped all my hair off. Now approaching the shoulder length area and trying to get them back. So good to know it's not just my hair that needs length to curl!
