Sealing made a HUGE difference

curlypearlcurlypearl Posts: 12,226Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
I decided to try going curly again. I have been doing roller sets because in winter, the wind blows my curls out, but the weather improved so I wanted to try curls again.

I tried something I've read about here and it made an enormous difference, so I'm hoping it helps some other curlies. After poo, condish, and a smidge of KCKT, I sealed with an oil: Beautiful Curls Shea Butter and Neem Oil (in my siggie). Then I scrunched in a little KCCC and diffused until almost dry - then let it dry on its own.

It came out really well - much less messy than usual. The curl pattern is more consistent. I SOTC with Nourish and Shine and I'm very happy with my curls for the first time in months!

Try sealing - just a little oil. Good luck and please post back your results! :flower:

for me in low dews (or prolonged time in bldgs that are dry), sealing is absolutely essential. my hair has never liked the various oils i've tried over the years, but does like the butters (see signature) i seal it with when i sotc.

for some reason i can get away with not sealing in high dews. guess my hair just can't get enough moisture!! LOL! and, conversely, cannot afford to give any up!

Very happy to hear, curlypearl! Just yesterday I was really surprised to get really good results from using Donna Marie Super Buttercreme to seal the ends of my hair. I hadn't been using it very often at all because it felt heavy on my hair, but for whatever reason yesterday, the right combination of leave-in, sealer, skip curling, diffusing, and dew points came together to make my hair have a good hair day. :glasses8:

When you say just a little, how much exactly? And do you scrunch it in or smooth it or how do you apply it?

    Thanks!

I was just going to ask the same things! Details, please! :) And would it work if it's humid out?

i'll tell you what generally works for me, it will be different for everyone. i don't use oils as my hair reacts badly.
after my hair dries and when i sotc, i lightly coat my hands with one of the following -- spiral solutions emollience, john masters organics pomade, jane carter nourish & shine -- and sotc sop my hair has a VERY LIGHT layer on it. sometimes i need to add a bit more, but i usually wait and see. i also have been using curl junkie ciab in this manner and it's been working. i don't use the same one two days in a row.
be careful not to use too much as you might then need a low poo to remove it. on the other hand, sometimes the next day i don't need anything as there is a light bit left from day before in spite of cowashing.

yes, it works in high dews also. seals the hair -- no moisture in, no moisture out.

Hi everyone, thanks for your support and I'm happy to hear your experiences! I really had a great hair day and I'm sure it was the sealing. It rained today, but it wasn't actually that humid so I'll have to wait and see if I have the same experience as RBB.

I used very little oil, just enough to coat my hands really lightly. It was less than1/4 teaspoon but my hair is only chin length. The thing is, this oil is extremely light - I've tried sealing before with cocoanut oil and it just coated my hair and was gunky.

I smoothed the oil on very wet hair that had a tiny bit of Kinky Curly Knot Today - didn't scrunch. I followed up with about 1/2 teaspoon KCCC gel and scrunched gently. Then I scrunched out extra moisture very gently with a paper towel and diffused. When it was dry I smoothed on a teeny amount of Jane Carter Nourish and Shine which helped control the strays.

The bottom line for me, I think, is to seal with this oil over leave-in condish and use just the smallest amount of everything. Otherwise my hair loses its bounce and gets scraggly looking.

    I got a compliment!

My hair has got to look good tomorrow - I hope this lasts.

    Thanks for the feedback. :love3:

So, CP applies before stylers, and rbb applies when dry to sotc.

I have some pomade laying around somewhere and should try it.

rbb - I just used CJ CIAB as my styler yesterday. So you don't apply it until your hair is dry, then use it to sotc only? Never thought of that.

for some unknown reason, it seems to work best for me that way. have no idea why.

I never used to seal before, but now that I'm trying to grow out my curls to waist length (waist length 2012 challenge! woo!), I've really been trying to baby my hair, and sealing makes a HUGE difference! I've tried butters years ago, but they were too heavy/greasy for my hair, but natural oils (nothing with petroleum or mineral oil in it) work great for me.
Right now I use this Vitamin E oil blend (with Sweet Almond, Lemon, Grapeseed, and Jojoba oils in it), that was under $2 at my local beauty supply and not only does it smell DIVINE (hubby can't keep his nose outta my hair, lol!), but it makes my curls so SHINY and HEALTHY looking! I just put a quarter-sized amount to each of my 4 sections of hair (focusing on the ends) after the shower and my Infusium leave-in, and then I put in my EcoStyler (the Moroccan Argan Oil gel). I have no breakage these days, and my shed hair count has gone down quite a lot. Not to mention, less scrunching out the crunch once all dry.

i let my leave in be my styler -- it varies, most days this winter it's cj deep fix, or cj beauticurls leave in, but it can be others. then ciab acts as sealer/enhancer.

I want to try sealing since I'm in high dews year round but I'm not sure when to apply the sealant. I always placed much more emphasis on hard hold gel and didn't think sealing would really make much of a difference.

You can apply your sealant as first product on, or after your leave in.
