Deep Cond rec

I posted this to protein sensitive board as well, but this forum gets more traffic and it seems there are a few on here like me who are protein sensitive and low porosity.

I am currently using GVP Cond balm and it works alright but I feel my hair doesn't absorb it and I feel I want something with a little slip. I hate AOHSR. It feels like it just sets on top of my hair. I love products I can find on the ground and use as a base to add some of my beloved oils like grape seed and avocado, and essential oils.
Me: 3c, very thick
BC- May 2010
Current routine:
pre poo: avacado, banana babyfood, grapeseed oil, and silk amino acid. Cleanser: DC No Poo 1x a week and BC 1x a week. DT: GVP Cond balm and grape seed oil
Co-wash: GVP CD, TJ tea tree
Leave-in: GVP CD, TJ tea tree, and grape seed oil
Styling: HETT and castor oil
DD (8 & 6 yo): both4s (1 thick, 2 thin) – keep in 2strand twists
DD (4yo): 3b (very thin, hard to grow) – keep in single braids with lots of beads for protection

I'm low porosity and protein sensitive too. I like Tresemme naturals for my rinse out. Nice slip. For deeper conditioning I like curl junkie curl rehab. I also just started using garnier Fructis sleek and like it so far just not crazy about the smell. They're all protein fee.
3a/b, fine texture, low porosity, normal elasticity, mod-CG 7/11/11

    LOOB for second day hair

Very interesting that you mention garner fructis sleek and shine. I have a bottle in my cabinet, bought it to use on my girl's hair and really like it. I remembered how much I love the slip and was just preparing to research if it was protein free. Thank you so much. I always forget how much I love the slip from tresseme naturals!

+1 to the bolded. I even hate the smell; it makes me gag! :pukel:

I recently discovered Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Calming Conditioner. OMG. This stuff is the bizness (at least as far as my hair is concerned). I have low porosity, dense, type 4 hair and I have the whole, "just sitting on top of my head and not absorbing" issue as well with alot of conditioners. I'm also protein sensitive and can only tolerate it in minute amounts in product that doesn't sit on my strands and is rinsed out right away (like shampoo). I've been on the hunt for a moisturizing DC for awhile because I can't stand it when my hair starts getting into that frizzy and dry state that means I'm heading towards protein overload. If I keep the protein going despite the pre-warnings of protein overload, my hair becomes brittle and begins to break. :sad3: Not even trying to go there...

In any case, my recommendation, like I said, is Giovanni 50:50. I also add oils to my DC and honey as well. This stuff absorbs into my strands (I do use a heat cap after I apply it for 30 minutes) and has my hair soft and moisturized for days. It doesn't have a strong scent at all (unlike AOHSR) and you can buy it on the ground. I found my latest stash at my local Tom Thumb grocery store; reduced price for quick sales ($5.00 a bottle)!

I'm glad you posted this. I'm not liking the tresemme naturals anymore. I think I'm reacting to the aloe. The radiant volume one seems to be ok. I'm looking for a more moisturizing conditioner and may have to try this. I thought Giovanni products were loaded with proteins and always stayed away for that reason.

Most Giovanni products do have tons of protein in them. The Giovanni 50:50 is one of the few that don't though.

Did you know that Tressame Natural conditioner has isopropyl alcohol in it? For this reason it dries my hair out horribly which is why I can't use it. Even in minute amounts, isopropyl alcohol is my hair's enemy. Your hair could be reacting to the alcohol as well. Just a thought...

Wow, thanks for the tips. I never quite know which are the bad alcohols but you are absolutely right. It might not be the aloe at all.

I can totally relate to the protein sensitivity you described upthread. I think my hair likes protein every now and then but if I don't get good moisture in my hair, protein starts to build up and I get straw. I'll try the Giovanni and see if if helps. Thanks. :)

You could add oils to your conditioner to make them more conditioning. I'm also looking for cheap CG deep conditioners as my rinse out, but I'm not sure where to get them. The only stores we have nearby is Safeway, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Target, CVS, Sally's (from nearest to farthest). And some of them are still pretty far. Any cheap (<$12 please) moisturizing deep conditioner recommendations? I'm also looking for a cheap CG protein conditioner. Thanks.
