Pre-teen changing texture

I'm the mom of a pre-teen daughter with curls. She has always had "banana curls," that is they would fit around a banana! But now, she is getting some hair that is more like pencil-diameter and much coarser. To make it worse, she currently wants to keep her hair very long as some of her straight-hair friends do. I'm not sure how to handle these two textures on her head at the same time, especially as she is wanting to take over her own hair-care. We do the cg method, and currently use re:coil and a gel on her hair. Any advice would be most welcome.

Gels can't change the texture of hair. A lot of people on this board use gel regularly without any side affects. Gels are safe to use on hair. Sometimes people's hair just changes texture during puberty.
