Deva Curl Safe for Babies and Pregnant Women?

I have a concern about the ingredients listed on one of their products. Some of these ingredients are highly questionable as to whether they can be used by little babies and pregnant women. Here is the ingredient list I found on an Amazon page selling one of their products:

Cetearyl Alcohol,
Behenalkonium Chloride,
Glycerin,
Glycol Distearate,
Cetyl Esters,
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride,
Propylene Glycol,
Cetrimonium Chloride,
Citric Acid,
Diazolidinyl Urea,
Iodopropyl Butylcarbamate,
Fragrance (Parfum),
Propylene Glycol,
Cetrimonium Chloride,
Citric Acid,
Diazolidinyl Urea.

Botanicals:
Oleo Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil,
Melissa Officinalis (Lemon Balm) Extract,
Humulus Lupulas (Hops) Extract,
Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract,
Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract,
\Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract,
Achillea Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract.

Here is a page that made me question DevaCurl, which lists ingredients that should be avoided:

Holistically Haute: Safe Skin Care for Mommies-to-Be

I don't want to discourage anyone who has successfully used Deva Curl products. I just want to know if anyone has done the research to know whether it's safe for use on those most vulnerable to the effects of ingredients.

Which ingredients are you worried about, specifically? You can try researching those on the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ASTDR) website.

Thanks for the link. I just realized I had some duplicates.

For a start, I'm most suspicious about the propylene glycol, Iodopropyl Butylcarbamate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Diazolidinyl Urea, and Cetrimonium Chloride. The yarrow was mentioned on one of the sites I linked as being not good for pregnant women.

I don't know too much about them. I guess I'm getting a bit nervous that I have to cancel my DevaCurl specialist aspirations except maybe the cut (if they'll even do that).

Just called the salon in NY. Was referred to curlmart.com to look up the exact ingredients. I did. I was disappointed.

I looked at three different products. It was a bit more worrying, with the addition of Red 40, German Chamomile, and Peppermint. All three are not good for pregnant mamas, and Red 40 is definitely not good for young children. :-(

Oh, well. I was really hoping I could experience their program. I shall look to another source of curl food.
Off to the recipe posts I go. :love2:

My research also confirms toxicity and hazardous concerns for Deva products, particularly their use of urea, which releases formaldehyde. In addition, No-Poo contains a silicone!

    Here is the objective evidence:

    Formaldehyde concern in No-Poo:

    Silicone in No-Poo:
Laureth-4, the 7th listed ingredient in No-Poo, IS a silicone, according to its manufacturer, Dow Chemical.

See here: DOW CORNING® 7-3099 DIMETHICONE HIP EMULSION

What the eff? So Lorraine encourages thousands of curlies to stop using cones and ends up adding some to her own line? I am very disappointed about this - but it may explain why i've been having trouble with build-up since using the no-poo...

I've been questioning the ingredients lately myself. I do love a select few of their products, but have start to phase them out with other more natural products for no particular reason.

If at any time there's any question, avoid it like the plague. However, some stylists are willing to work with you on products. I was able to get a stylist to agree on dry cut only, since I'm sensitive to a lot of Deva products.

The 2005 interview with Lorraine Massey, linked above by Firefox7275, is out-of-date now. The formula of DevaCurl products was subsequently reformulated, and no longer includes Dimethicone.

So Lorraine's support of that particular silicone . . . stopped.

I wrote to DevaCurl, asking about its use of Diazolidinyl urea, citing the moderate toxicity rating of No-Poo on the Environmental Working Group egw.org website.

DevaCurl's response is printed just below. Their response did not convince me of the ingredient's safety, but my own research did give me some increased comfort, although my concerns remain.

Here is a possibly-objective and possibly-reliable site that counters the egw.org concerns: The 12 Most Maligned Cosmetic Ingredients

That site links to a CDC toxicology report on formaldehyde (a by-product of urea) that found no impact on fetal development, see p 218 /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.atsdr.cdc.gov%2Ftoxprofiles%2Ftp111.pdf" class="Popup The study concluded "Inhaled formaldehyde or formaldehyde applied to the skin is not likely to
be transferred from mother to child in breast milk or to reach the developing fetus." But significant exposure to inhaled formaldehyde may be carcinogenic.

    Here is the DevaCurl response:
Diazolidinyl urea is a preservative that is widely used in cosmetic and personal care products to ensure product safety. Formaldehyde releasers release formaldehyde in trace amounts and immediately mix with water so there is no chance of inhaling harmful levels of formaldehyde gas.

Our products have been safety tested and have been deemed safe for use. If you have an allergy or another health concern, please consult your doctor or health care professional before using DevaCurl, DevaCare or any other personal care products.
