I was thinking that. Its thick as all get out & a little too short to avoid looking like uploadfromtaptalk1331093565473.jpg when dry. But I'm being patient. Thanks.

We can't tell with styled hair. Unstyled is best.

Please re-read the information and characteristics posted in this entire thread. If you still have specific questions after that, someone here may be able to help you. Like soleil said, styling your hair and posting a pic of it is not going to get your question answered.

I agree that posting a pic of unstyled hair is best. Here is a closeup pic of my dry hair from when I was about 3 months post BC:

I say my hair is type 4 w/o really putting letters on it because I just think it makes more sense to say that than to attempt to subtype it. My hair is tightly coiled. It has a lot of shrinkage, more than 50%. My hair isn't silky (although there are type 4s w/silky hair), and I have some coils/curls the size of pencils and some that are smaller. I have O shaped and S shaped curls and that became more apparent to me as my hair grew out.

This looks more like a type 3 than a 4.
    Hair type 4 "mystery":dontknow:
Fine, soft hair with little penspring curls of different sizes. Small patch of wavy hair at center of my nape. Did BC in 2009 after 28yrs of curly perms.
Products:WEN Fig, KinkyCurly, QhemetBiologics, SheaMoisture, Vatika oil, EVCO, EVOO, WGO, JBCO products

I always thought of type 3 hair as curls bigger than pencils.

I have a question about that "circumference," because most of the 4a YouTubers appear to consistently have larger curls than that.

4a is so difficult to define, though. It seems to include on the same head 3c and 4b, and can at different times appear to be one or the other. :confused2:

And just look at those examples. I would have classified Esperanza as 4a, Macy as 4b. Who knew?

I agree with you. Hair can appear to be one or the other at different times & with different products, & also depending on it's condition. Here's a photo of mine to add to the confusion. When I did the BC in 2009 my hair didn't look like this. I'd had curly perms for 28 yrs & had a headful of scab hair that would not obey any product. KinkyCurly did not work & I gave Knot Today a bad review here. Carols' Daughter & Qhemet worked so so. After 2 yrs of ayuvedic oils, natural products, extreme pampering, & trimming off scab hair every few months the texture went back to normal & I grew a lot of little curls. My hair looks like this with KinkyCurly & now Knot Today works wonderfully. Soaking wet it can look like this but with less organized spiral curls but it does have a definite curl pattern. It also makes a difference what shampoo/condish I use. When I tried the Mane & Tail shampoos/conditioners everyone raved about, my hair hated them & I wound up with a wild, dry, wiry feeling, tangled up mess that bore little resemblance to the photo & was hard to detangle. Now Qhemet & Carol's Daughter work waaaay better than they did 2 yrs ago now that scab hair is gone. I just say my hair's type 4 & call it a day !! What do you call it?

I think there are so many hair variations you can go mad trying to classify them:confused2: & then you might find out something for your "type" doesn't work but one from another "type" does:eek: !

:/ My hair doesn't hold a curl that well. It doesn't napp, but it doesn't keep a curl either. It doesn't really do much of anything. But this is it at 3 months. 4a?

i might have to wait a little until my hair grows out, but i thought i'd give typing my shorties a try haha. what do you guys think? i think i could possibly be 4a? my hair texture is pretty soft. wouldn't call it silky though. it can get dry and rough if i don't moisturize it. it's more so fuzzy than kinky. lots of get away hairs since my curls are still growing in.

Yes, only my curls never get that defined -_-; my hair really doesn't do much of anything. It's always soft and I've never had issues with napping or tangling before, but it doesnt keep a curl either.

i'm no curl or hair expert. but maybe there's a possibility that your curls are bigger than you think they are. if you say they aren't really showing. i can definitely see them on the top on your head though :) are you considering letting your hair grow out any longer? they'll probably looked more developed when they grow out a little more.

Neither do i know what my porosity is nor my strand size :/. i feel like such a n00b eventhough i've been natural for a while now. Ive been debating between 4b or 4a, but the longer it gets the more it resembles 3c (though i still believe that im 4a) i've got tons of pictures for you guys and i appricitate you guys input and advice!

@JosseyPossey...I see a 4a...I think it may look 4b because your hair was just dry.
    @ms. tracy...you take me for a 4a too

Im not seeing 4b for either of ya'll...it is my understanding that 4b hair doesn't curl/coil even with product/conditioner

Hi, I finally decided to post in this thread. I've been natural for awhile, but I damaged my hair with heat and had to start all over. It's been a struggle with the hair in terms of keeping it moisturised. I don't know what my hair type is, or even porosity level. I'm trying to learn all of this to help with keeping my hair more healthy. As I have a huge problem with moisture and frizz (especially at my edges) which has led to breakage and cutting off a lot of my hair again in November, second BC I guess. I'm hoping to get it right this time.

Anyway these are some pics of my hair. I believe it's a 4a with maybe some 3c, but I wanted to make sure. Any pointers on it would be great.

    I have some pics:
    san2d.jpg

    san7c.jpg

    san5b.jpg

    san1b-1.jpg

    san4b.jpg

As you can see my edge are prone to dryness and being frizzy (also seems to be a totally different type to the rest of the hair). And this makes it grow slower than the rest of my hair.
