hair looks terrible while it air dries

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem, and what you do to combat it.

I love being CG and my current products seem to be working out really well. When my hair is completely dry and I SOTC, my curls are soft, well-defined, and frizz is low.

But while my hair is in the process of drying, it looks like crap! Even when I diffuse my hair this is the case... probably because I cannot diffuse it all the way dry without it getting seriously frizzy, so it still has to air dry part of the way.

For the record, when I say it looks like crap, it basically looks like crispy twigs with a frizz halo around them. It stays this way until it's dry enough for me to SOTC, at which point it looks great.

I just started a new job and I feel like my hair looks terrible until around noon when it's completely dry. It makes me self-conscious in morning meetings and around coworkers. I feel like I'm living a double life--great hair in the evening, bad hair in the morning!

Could I be using too much gel? Not enough leave in? The wrong products for me?

Here's the routine (also in sig)

DevaCurl no-poo
AOHR
KCKT leave-in
LAL sport gel

Thanks curlies! :toothy8:
My hair: 3b, corkicelli, medium porosity, medium texture, medium/thick density

Co-wash: DevaCurl NoPoo
Rinse-out: GVP Conditioning Balm
Leave-in: KCKT, Suave Naturals Coconut, or my rinse-out!
Gel: SS FHG (my new HG!!)... I also like HESMU, AIF, CJ CQ, BRHG, CJ PP and the occasional LALSG

Likes: Plopping!
Dislikes: Glycerin

CG and loving it! :hello1:

Have you tried washing your hair at night instead of in the morning?

I've also found my hair to look better at the end of the day than the beginning. I start off with very 'producty' looking wurls that eventually soften to frizz free locks.

Do you touch your hair a lot while it's drying?

    I have this exact problem.

While my hair is drying it has that wet "crunchy" look until it fully dries (which takes hours) and I am able to crunch it out.

I am still trying to perfect second day hair so I can have a shower at night but am having trouble.

I totally have that issue! My solution is to wash at night. I get home from work, take a shower and wash and do all my hair products. By then my husband is home and we cook dinner (he likes to cook with me). I leave it down all night, and then put it up into a gentle pineapple-bun thing (after drying for about 4 hours it is still pretty damp), and when I wake in the morning, it is mostly dry, but the gross frizzy mess has magically turned into smooth, glossy curls. If it is not quite dry yet, I leave it up, and get lots of compliments.

Yeah, I'm starting to think I should just wash at night. I just feel like if I do that then I never get to enjoy the freshly done look that occurs when my curls are finally dry :) plus I just prefer to shower in the morning, it seems to fit better with my schedule/routine.

I really don't touch my hair while it's drying, so I don't think it's that. But it's good to know I'm not alone in this! Before I change my schedule around I'm wondering if I try a gel with less hold if it will help...?

I know EXACTLY what you mean. And honestly I think it's probably from touching it. I was a serial hair-toucher which made up for probably 90% of my frizz and lack of definition. Even now it's very hard to resist the temptation to compulsively play with my hair. But seriously- don't. You will be so glad you did and be amazed at the different it makes.

I know what you mean....I prefer to shower in the morning as well.
I shower in the morning but wash my hair and apply products the evening before. I wrap my hair when I shower so it doesn't get damp from the humidity.

I just deal with it. I know my hair is going to look like crap the first 3-4hrs so I don't worry about it anymore. I know that didn't help but if your hair looks fine once it's dry try not to think about it

Hi, I've been lurking and just wanted to say that happens to me too! I don't touch my hair when it's wet, (and not too much when it's dry, come to think about it) but first it goes to skinny curls with a halo of frizz, then to the curls dry on the bottom but not on top, then finally they fluff out and look fine again. I usually diffuse till the fluff is there, and I do that either in the night mid week or in the afternoon on the weekend. First day and 2nd day hair are pretty much the same for me, so I'm okay with sleeping on freshly diffused hair and not getting first day hair technically... In fact, I do that so often that I consider my 2nd day hair first day, 3rd day hair is 2nd day, etc :-)

:laughing3: Ha ha, I agree with everyone above who's hair looks strangely 'alien' as it's drying. Thank heavens for SOTC! Once I've done that, it's as if my 'dead', flat locks have suddenly been given the kiss of life, lol!:laughing8:

Mine does it too. Hard and crunchy till it dries. Usually I scrunch it out lightly when I get to work which is about an hour or so after diffusing. That helps some. Then I do a full scrunch out a couple hours later. I have been thinking about washing at night and see what happens but truthfully most mornings my hair is crazy scary and needs a rewet and style. Lol!

I hate that too. I feel like hiding until it is dry b/c it just looks wet and crazy. I blast the air vents while I drive to work so that I can hopefully SOTC before I walk in to work.
