Has anyone tried Jamaican Black Castor Oil for thinning hair?

sheilacurlsheilacurl Posts: 1,240Registered Users
Hi Ladies,

I was hoping we could share our thoughts and / or experiences with using Jamaican Black Castor Oil on thinning hair. I have thinning at both of my temples and when I lift up or pull my hair back, I can see a lot more scalp than I used to, especially on the right-hand side. I do sleep more on my right side and I use an orthopedic pillow that is made of foam that is pretty firm. (I use that type of pillow because of a reversed arch in my neck from whiplash when I was about 13). Is there any chance that pillow would be contributing to the thinning on the right side of my head? What about the thinning temples?

After reading the reviews on Amazon.com I am kind of excited to try it.
Amazon.com: Jamaican Black Castor Oil 8oz: Beauty

and there's one that is extra dark, claiming to be the most effective
Sunny Isle Extra Dark Jamaican Black Castor Oil | The best Source For Jamaican Black Castor Oil

I should probably just break down and get some rogaine, but users have complained of intense itching and it staying wet and oily on their head for hours. I guess I won't know unless I try it, right?

I'd say go for it, you could always just use it at night, while you are asleep and hopefully most would be absorbed by morning. If not there are ways to blot out the oiliness or different ways to wear your hair to cover it up.

I have the one by Tropic Isle. I think it has helped grow in my edges even though I have been slacking off lately. Thanks for the reminder, I will start that tomorrow evening.

I found it at a beauty supply store although I had to search a few places before finding it.

    Good luck

No haven't tried it. I use Rogaine. It works. Costs 20$ for a 3 months supply and there's science behind it to show that it does work.
IMO, save your money and use Rogaine instead.

I'm having the same issue, my left temple was growing in during the summer and now this dry winter is making it worse. I will look into the black castor oil and try it but I'm wondering about the shampoo.

I've always had thin temples, but they've worsened lately. I've used JBCO on and off, but I'm two weeks into using it regularly each night.

The thing about Rogaine is that people who use it say that if you stop using it, you lose the growth you gained. Hello, Rogaine, for the rest of your life! I can't use it anyway, so the JBCO has got to work for me.

Funny you should ask... I just ordered some from amazon.com a few minutes ago!

I just got my hair cut last week, and Jackie chopped off WAY too much. ("Wanda, is that you?") My hair normally grows pretty fast and thick so I'm not too worried. (And I'm saving on conditioner and detangling time!) But something we did notice was a little thinning at the front.

So... I thought I'd try this just to see what happens. This stuff is also supposed to be good for acne, so if it doesn't make my hair grow, maybe it can get rid of those annoying pimples! :sad3:

(I'll try to remember to update within the next few weeks.)

I hear this a lot and I don't understand. I have to brush my teeth twice a day, wash my face nightly, use conditioner daily, etc, etc for the rest of my life. Using Rogaine adds less than 1 minute more like 30 seconds to my routine. So incredibly worth it because it works. No one would ever guess I lost over half of my hair.

Good luck with the castor oil.

    Hi,

I'm using regular castor oil for my hair and also eyelashes and let me tell you that it works. My lashes are fuller and you can see the growth from one day to the other. Also my hair is growing and is thicker. To help you decide, I started using it on my sister's hair as she had some bald spots and the bald spots are not bald anymore and her hair was really thin. Not anymore. She was so happy with the results that she went and bought a bottle of the JBCO as I told her it was stronger than the regular one.

    Go for it.

Really? From one day to the other? I did not notice that in my case (as far as my eyelashes go), but I wasn't expecting results that fast. Do you (and your sister) use the JBCO on the scalp every day? Do you leave it in or wash it out after a while? How soon did you notice the growth?

On my eyelashes I noted the results on the next day. On hair I just noted the new growth being thicker. I put it on my scalp once a week at night with a plastic cap and wash it on the next day. On my eyelashes I also put it at night with a clean mascara brush and then wash it in the morning.

But, once a week I also apply one mask, at night, that I've done with shea butter, castor, argan, peppermint, jojoba and coconut oils. So, I wash my hair twice a week after applying different treatments. One with pure castor oil and the other with my homemade mask.

It works and I'm really happy with it.

Forgot to say that I started using it on the 19th January. I can clearly see the difference on my lashes everyday. They are fuller, thicker and longer.

    Excellent, Sedadica...

I just got my JBCO yesterday, so I'm going to start trying it on my scalp tonight. (My eyelashes are already pretty long, but my eyebrows could use some help!)

    Thanks! :thumbright:

Let me just warn you that some people complained of having breakouts on their forehead due to applying castor oil on eyebrows. If you want to avoid that, apply it with a small brush.
Just let me know if it works with you.
    Best of luck.

    Hi crimsonshedemon,

I'm so glad Rogaine is working for you!
Did Rogaine help grow in the hair around your hairline and temples too?

    Thanks in advance,

I've been doing a bit of reading about this, how's everyone going with it? Early days I know but I'm curious!

Have also been looking at Rogaine - crimsonshedemon, did you experience further hair loss when you first started using it? It seems quite common but the idea of it (even in the short term) kinda freaks me out.

With me is working. I'm using it for two months now and my hair looks healthier, thicker and longer.

Ok, thanks. I found some on ebay that seems reasonable (can't find any here in Oz) so I may give it a whirl.

regular cold pressed Castor oil has done wonders for my thinning crown... I used for six months and can hardly find those problem areas

since I'm running out of the regular cold pressed Castor oil I'm jumping on the JBCO band wagon... I ordered recently from jamaicanoils.com site

my edges haven't thickened as fast as my crown so I'm hoping to have better results with JBCO; I ordered the dark JBCO Sunny Isle brand

I got some from ebay as planned. Have been using it for a couple of weeks now so a bit early to see any results. It smells bad and I find it really hard to distribute as it's so thick, but am persevering.

Have just bought jbco few weeks ago. It's thick but I think is working on my edges. But a bit too early to pronounce a verdict.

I've been using JBCO for about a week, it's too soon to see results but I'm hoping to geat good results like so may others.

I have been applying daily to temple areas and sealed my ends with it after a wash and DC- a tablespoon was added to my DC for added moisture.

I thought that JBCO would feel really thick and tacky on my scalp but it doesn't; if my scalp likes a product it's a keeper.

How about regular castor oil used as a laxative found at walgreens? Anyone tried it?

I have use reg old drugstore castor oil for my hair. I like it. My hair sucks up moisture and I mix it with my oil blend and make my Eco custard with it. It really helps retain the moisture and I would say since I have been using it I noticed definite growth. So if u can't get to the jbco, try the regular. U may like it too
