Beginners level of fitness AKA I'm out of shape. Please advise!

Hello everyone,

I would like to get in "shape". I'm not overweight or anything. I'm 5'7" and weigh about 160lbs. My stomach is pretty flat and I wear about a size 6-8, but I would like to be toned. Like this girl...:

I'm not too concern about losing fat, more about toning up and getting in shape. My measurements are about 36"/27"/41" last time I checked, so I do not believe I am on the heavy side, but I want to be toned!

So what kind of workout do you suggest? I cannot do gym work since I get bored easily. I was thinking of joining boot camp, but I'm concerned since I haven't worked out in a very long time and I don't want to kill myself (lol). Or maybe pilates? But I feel like some cardio would be needed to get the sculpt that I want. What do you suggest? I'm also pretty weak in the arms. Most of my strength is in my legs or hips. But I do not do well with running. I was born with dislocated hips so I don't want to put too much pressure on those areas.

Well even though you don't consider yourself fat, "toning" yourself requires you to lose the layer of fat that is covering your muscles, especially the tummy area! Cardio will definitely neccesary I recommend maybe using ellipticals since they're not high impact and implementing some weights into your routine a kitty cat...and i dance dance dance :blob7:

I've been doing squats and lunges and mountain climbers and running up stairs for 2wks trying to get my butt and ( inner) thighs toned up.

I've been consistent, doing it everyday and I'm seeing some results. Its not drastic or anything, but I think if I stick with it until June, I'll be where I want to be.

I'm down to 134 from 136, but I really want the weight I lose to come back as muscle.

Eta, I also hate running and the gym so whatever exercise I do is done in the house. Although, when I'm out, I fast walk whenever I can.

Cardio is important for so many reasons besides just losing weight. Toning absolutely requires strength training, and there are several options available. Isometrics might be a good starting point if it's been a while since you strength trained. Isometrics are exercises that use your body weight as resistance (sit-ups, push-ups, etc.). For more toning, you can add a balance ball- the instability of a balance ball requires your body to use stabilizer muscles to maintain balance.

The second option would be circuit machines, but you mentioned that you did not want to go to a gym. The advantage of circuit machines is that when they are set properly, your body is kept in proper form the whole time- this is important if you have injuries that need to be worked around.

Your final option is free weights (my personal favorite). This gives you added resistance over isometrics, but utilizes stabilizer muscles since you are not set up in a machine. Just a pair of 2-5 pound dumbbells can help make a huge difference. But if you do not maintain good form throughout your exercises, you can absolutely injure yourself. For that reason alone, I would suggest trying to get an appointment with a trainer so you can learn how to do everything correctly.

I'm 5'7 1/2, medium bone structure, and 138 lbs. In the past year I have gone from a size 12 to a size 6. That is where I am the happiest as well. I've been a size 2 and it looked like (as my father would say) death eating on a soda cracker. Lol. I just want to look and feel healthy. I danced to lose weight and now I'm adding workouts to tone and strengthen. I have some killer VHS tapes from the 80's. Buns and Abs of steel, etc... Crunches, lunges, leg lifts and each tape has arm exercises as well. I did the workouts often when I was in the best shape of my life. They are very easy to do at home. I work 12 hour swing shifts, and a very insane schedule, so I find it hard to get to the gym. I workout on my days off while I'm doing laundry, etc... I've been loving it. I was a workout fiend most of my life, but a few foot surgeries and a sedentary job threw a curve ball. I found a fun way to reintroduce myself, and could not be happier! Best of luck.
