Does anyone else still need to shampoo?

I know that a lot of people on this site believe in completely cutting out shampoo. It's an interesting idea, and one that I have tried, but I find that if I go to long without a real shampoo, my hair still gets greasy, especially considering I use gel (Aveda Confixor/ sometimes Deva anGEL) once or twice a day. I have tried the Deva No-poo, but that doesn't really do the job. I use conditioner every day, but the fact is that even "co-washing" doesn't really clean my hair... that's just not the purpose of a conditioner. I don't shampoo every day, more like every two or three. Does anyone else have the same dilemma?
P.S. I use Aveda Shampure.

I shampoo once a week and cowash 2-3 times a week. Any other time I just wet it with water.

I shampoo because too much conditioner makes my hair smell a little rank and some of the products I use have cones.

I use shampoo (with and without sulphates) regularly, co-washing doesn't work for me. I also have psoriasis on my scalp and I need shampoo to wash out all the creams and oils I use for that.

I shampoo. My hair feels gross if I don't.. I also have to use Nizoral dandruff shampoo every week.

My hair likes low-poo best as a regular wash, not conditioner. I use 'real' shampoo once every 3 or 4 months, to wash out henna, and before doing a PT.

So yes my hair likes shampoo but only occasionally, NOT as a regular cleanser.

I use a low-poo once in a while to clarify my hair. But co-washing works fine for me. I prefer shampoo since I feel like my hair gets cleaner more easily than co-washing, but my hair still gets clean with co-washing it just takes more effort, since I really have to scrub my scalp a lot to get it thoroughly clean and I have to use a lot of conditioner. But my hair looks nicer and is less frizzy when I co-wash. Conditioner works fine to clean your hair, it has gentle cleansers instead of harsh ones. You just have to really make sure that you scrub your scalp well to get it clean with conditioner.

I can go a couple days with just co washing, but after a while my scalp feels gross and my roots are weighed down so i do wash my scalp once is a while.

Sometimes I'll put conditioner on my length before shampooing to protect it from the sulfates.

Ever since henna'ing my hair and winter hit I find I can NOT use regular shampoo, it is absolutely too drying in my hair. I can use a regular low-poo when I feel my hair is getting a bit built up but I have to moisturize really well afterwards or my hair will feel dry many days afterwards.
  • favoritecolorblufavoritecolorblu Posts: 287Registered Users
I shampoo every once in a while like maybe once a month to get rid of build up. My hair doesn't mind it that way. Most of the time I either water wash or co-wash.

I use a low-poo such as Jessicurl's hair cleansing cream if I feel like I need more than just a co-wash or even just a water wash. I usually need the low-poo once a week or just a couple times a month to feel like I've really cleansed out all the product I use. I rarely feel the need to use a regular sulfate shampoo, and I always feel very stripped when I do. I only use those if I accidentally use a cone or if my hair get to a stage where it needs some sort of reset button. For the most part water scrubbing and cowashing work as my regular routine, though, with an occasional low poo to help out.

I feel like that more people low poo or no poo (cleansing conditioners) than just straight up cowash. I like to low poo, because I like lathering up and I think it washes out my flakes better than just cowashing or water rinsing.

I only low poo once in a while. It seems like a good idea to do that to avoid buildup. But even when I was using silicones, I only shampooed once or twice a week. My hair is naturally very dry and it just doesn't get greasy. My hair looks a lot better since I stopped shampooing and that's a good enough reason for me to stick with it! I like to give myself a nice long scalp massage when I co-wash; it feels relaxing and it's good for the scalp.

I low-poo almost every day. I typically take off 1 day each week and don't do anything with my hair other than a headband or ponytail (usually on a day when I'm just hanging around the house). Every so often I will try to co-wash (which I did when I first started cg) but I always get a lot of frizz. My fine hair just seems to prefer low-poo. Every few months my hair seems to really act up and won't do much of anything, so I do a quick shampoo with a combo of sulfate poo and conditioner.

It looks as if low-poo may be the answer to my prayers! I find that my hair is always kind of dry, but yet greasy at the roots if I don't wash it...lots of fun :p I'll admit I'm not very well versed on all of these product ingredients- although I have tried to educate myself I don't generally check labels very carefully. I don't know if what I am using is a sulfate shampoo, (or if it contains "cones" for that matter.) Anyway, I may try the low-poo. Are you referring the the Devachan product or are there many different brands?

I have a sulfate free poo, a sulfate poo, and a medicated dandruff shampoo that I'm sure has sulfates and I use them according to how my hair feels and looks. I also just do cowashing as well.

Winter, there are tons of sulfate-free poos, aka lo-poos, besides Deva. The Deva one is ok and pretty gentle, but doesn't clean very well imo. Whole Foods has many lo-poos, like Giovanni and Aubrey Organics and Kinky Curly. There are also drugstore ones but you have to really read labels, things can hide in those... You could also search lo-poo recs here and you will find tons of options without having to read labels!

I use shampoo, the no poo method makes my hair feel thicker and my curls much tighter and overall just harder to manage and more time consuming. Shampoo just works for me and keeps my hair looking the way I want it to. My hair is healthy and it's growing back fast so I don't think using it is an issue.

I have dry ends and greasy roots, I have to poo about once a week or my roots and scalp get totally grody. I'll dilute a small bit sulfate shampoo with water and concentrate the cleaning at my roots, and rinse it out quickly. I condition my roots with a lighter conditioner like SN Aloe, and focus the thicker conditioners on the length of my hair and especially the ends. This seems to be what is working best for me right now.

I still use Shampoos-- I have to since I live in an area with very hard water. If I don't wash my hair at least once a week my hair starts to feel scaley from the water... it's gross.
