Sally Beauty Supply sells a generic of K-PAK by Joico. It is called GVP Reconstructing Conditioner: Compare to Joico K-PAK. It works really well and is WAY cheaper. I used a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo before I did it. After the treatment I followed with a deep conditioner.

You probably need to determine your hair's texture. Fine hair generally needs more or stronger protein than medium or coarse hair.

My hair is medium textured and I use Spiral Solutions Repairing Protein treatment and Deeply Decadent Moisturizing Treatment once a month.

    HTH

    texture - medium/fine, porosity - low/normal, elasticity - normal
co-wash - NaturelleGrow Coconut Water or Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm Bark & Blue Malva Cleansing Conditioners
    LI - KCKT mixed w/ SM C & H Curl & Style Milk
DC - NG Mango & Coconut H2O or Chamomile/Brdck Root
Gel - SM souffle (winter), KCCC (summer) or CR Naturals Aloe Whipped Butter Gel (year round)
Sealers - Virgin Coconut Oil, Avocado butter, Aloe butter
Ayurvedic treatments - Jamila Henna, Sukesh, Aloe Vera Powder, Hibiscus Powder

    I use
    from sally's beauty supply
    Ion Effective Care Treatment
    GVP KPak
    Colorful Neutral Protein Filler
    Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor
Aphogee 2 step is a serious protein treatment.

Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner is a protein conditioner too.
The texture of your hair determines how much protein your hair can handle. Fine damaged hair usually needs a ton of protein.

Highly recommend Spiral Solutions Repairing Protein Treatment. I almost always use it as my rinse-out conditioner, I often use about a dime's worth as a leave-in, and I regularly use it as an actual treatment, usually leaving it on longer than it says.

My hair much prefers it to K-pak (real or knock-off), Nexxus Emergencee, or AOGPB (my favorite before SSRT). I like that I don't have to condition or DT afterward unless I just want to - it's moisturizing enough for me on its on.

My 2c/3a hair's medium fine, medium thick, pretty low porosity and in excellent condition.
    2C/3A/3B - modified CG - fairly fine now, normal/low porosity/normal elasticity

Current Main Rotation: MG217 medicated or Aim2Health 'poos for scalp, Elucence cond., Spiral Solutions Protein & Deeply Decadent Cond., CJCCCC reg or lite,CJ Pattern Pusha,, Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz + lots more, sporadically

HG Method: Super Soaker + Smasters-ing, brief upside down diffusing w/360o diffuser then clips/clamps & air dry. Newly gray - stopped my henna glosses!

+1 for SS Repair Treatment! I just did my very first PT this morning (who woulda thought I could OC within 3 weeks of going CG!?) with the SS PRT. My roots were crunchy and my hair was so tangly and undefinted. I'd been wearing it in a bun for the last 3 days waiting for my various protein samples from KathyMack to arrive. Finally got them and SO worth the wait. I washed with CJ Gentle Cleansing Shampoo then did the PRT and used my VO5 to add a little moisture back in. I didn't DT because (1) I only left the PT in while I finished my shower routine, and (2) I use a lot of products that are heavy on moisture already. When I got out of the shower I raked my leave-in through my hair, used my KCCC for the first time and topped that with BRHG. Pixiecurl'd, added a touch of CJ CIAB, air-dried, and BAM! Gorgeous curls and clumps again! Even my "signature curl" is back to it's true form :) (it's my one and only clump that always twists into a "DNA strand" helix no matter what I do- I was so sad when I lost that due to OC-ing). I'll be trying the CJ Repair Me next and am hoping for similar magic but so far the SS PRT is working wonders from my 2a strands all the way through to my 3a's. Love it!
Southern WI curly ~ mostly 2b/c with 2a/b underlayer and a few 3a curls on top
Low porosity, fine hair but LOTS of it!
Loves protein. Dislikes butters and heavy oils.
Working toward natural products and streamlining!!
Current Loves: JCCC, Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner, AG Recoil, CK Coil Jam

That's a great recipe! I didn't have some of the things at home and had to modify it. So I used:

    1 egg
    1/3 cup coconut milk
    half an avocado
    2 tbs coconut oil
    2 tbs olive oil
    1 tbs honey

blend until smooth and left it on my hair for 30 minutes, no heat (the egg would coagulate).
I rinsed it with a cleansing conditioner and styled.

    Good stuff!

    Does whey protein powder work?
Like the one you add to smoothies, before work outs, and muscles. I have MRM whey protein powder and I was wondering if I use it on my hair to give it some muscles.
